Paris enim perículi malum est, si illi aut natúræ nostræ véritas, aut Patérnæ glóriæ negátur æquálitas. Rom 4:13-17

Sermone 7 sulla Natività del Signore
Colui onora veramente e celebra piamente la festa odierna, o dilettissimi, il quale si guarda da ogni errore circa l'incarnazione del Signore e da ogni pensiero indegno della Divinità. Che si commette lo stesso errore e si corre lo stesso pericolo o negandogli una natura simile alla nostra, o non riconoscendogli una gloria uguale a quella del Padre. Quando dunque cerchiamo d'intendere il mistero della nascita di Cristo, che nacque da una Madre vergine, allontaniamo da noi le tenebre dei ragionamenti terreni, e il fumo della sapienza mondana si ritiri dall'occhio illuminato dalla fede.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Rallegratevi con me, voi tutti che amate il Signore:

Infatti è sull'autorità divina che poggia la nostra fede; divina è la dottrina che professiamo. Dacché sia che porgiamo l'orecchio dell'anima nostra alla testimonianza della legge, o agli oracoli dei profeti, o alla predicazione del Vangelo, è vero quello che Giovanni, pieno di Spirito Santo, proclamò: «Nel principio era il Verbo, e il Verbo era presso Dio e il Verbo era Dio. Esso nel principio era presso Dio. Tutte le cose sono state fatte per mezzo di lui, e nulla è stato fatto senza di lui» Joann. 1,1. Nell'una e nell'altra natura è dunque lo stesso Figlio di Dio che prende ciò ch'è nostro, senza perdere ciò che gli è proprio: che rinnova l'uomo nell'uomo rimanendo in se stesso immutabile. Dacché la divinità, che gli è comune coi Padre, non perdé nulla della sua onnipotenza, e la natura di servo non disonora in lui la natura di Dio: perché l'essenza somma ed eterna che si abbassò per la salute del genere umano, innalzò sì noi alla sua gloria, ma non cessò d'essere quello che era. Quindi quando l'Unigenito di Dio si confessa inferiore al Padre, cui si dice uguale, mostra che egli ha veramente l'una e l'altra natura: perché per l'inegualità prova che ha la natura umana, e per l'egualità dichiara di possedere la natura divina.

Libro 2 al capo 2 di Luca, verso la metà
Si circoncide dunque il bambino. Chi è questo bambino se non quello di cui fu detto «Ci è nato un bambino, ci è stato dato un Figlio?» Is. 9,6. Egli s'è assoggettato alla legge per guadagnare quelli ch'eran sotto la legge. «Affin di presentarlo al Signore» Luc. 2,22. Cosa voglia dire essere presentato al Signore in Gerusalemme lo direi se non l'avessi già detto nel commento su Isaia. Colui che si circoncide nei vizi, è giudicato degno dello sguardo del Signore, perché: «Gli occhi dei Signore sono sopra i giusti» Ps. 33,16. Vedi come tutta la serie dell'antica legge fu figura del futuro; perché anche la circoncisione significa la purificazione dai peccati.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Ma siccome la fragilità della carne e dello spirito dell'uomo trascina, per una tendenza naturale di cupidigia, al male e la impiglia in vizi inestricabili, perciò l'ottavo giorno della circoncisione è figura del tempo della risurrezione e della nostra futura liberazione da ogni colpa. Difatti questo vuol dire: «Ogni maschio primogenito sarà consacrato al Signore» Exod. 13,2. Perché le parole della legge esprimono la promessa del frutto della Vergine. (Frutto) veramente santo, perché immacolato. E che sia proprio questo il frutto significato dalla legge, lo dichiarano le parole, quasi identiche, ripetute dall'Angelo: «Per questo il Santo (essere), dice, che nascerà da te, sarà chiamato Figlio di Dio» Luc. 1,35.

For as there is danger, on the one hand, of denying the truth of Christ's participation of our nature, so is there no less danger, on the other, of doing despite to the equality of His glory with the glory of the Father. Wherefore, when we draw near to understand the mystery of Christ's Birth, wherein He was born of the Virgin Mary, we must leave the clouds of earthly imagination behind and pierce the fog of human wisdom with the eye of enlightened faith.

The Person of the Son of God therefore remaineth unchanged and one, though He have two natures, keeping His own, and taking ours. He appeareth as man to be the restorer of men, but abideth all the while in His immutable Godhead. That Godhead which He shareth with the Father was not a whit the less Almighty, nor did the form of a servant touch the form of God to derogate from it. The Most High and Everlasting Being, bending down for man's salvation, took the Manhood into His glory; He ceased not to be That which He is from everlasting. Hence we see the Only-begotten Son of God in one place confessing that the Father is greater than He, John xiv. 28, and in another declaring that He and the Father are One, x. 30. This is an evident proof of the distinction of His two natures, and the unity of His Person; for He is inferior to the Father as touching His Manhood, and yet equal to the Father as touching His Godhead, and yet, though He be God and Man, He is not two, but One Christ.

So the Child is circumcised. This is the Child of Whom it is said: Unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, Isa. ix. 6. Made under the law to redeem them that were under the law. Gal. iv. 4. To present Him to the Lord, ~22. In my Commentary on Isaiah I have already explained what is meant by being presented to the Lord in Jerusalem, and therefore I will not enter into the subject again. He that is circumcised in heart gaineth the protection of God, for the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous. Ps. xxxiii. 16. Ye will see that as all the ceremonies of the old law were types of realities in the new, so the circumcision of the body signified the cleansing of the heart from the guilt of sin.

These words were written with especial reference to the delivery of the Blessed Virgin. Truly He That opened her womb was holy, for He was altogether without spot, and we may gather that the law was written specially for Him from the words of the Angel: That Holy Thing Which shall be born of thee, shall be called the Son of God.

Among all that are born of women the Lord Jesus Christ stood alone in holiness. Fresh from His immaculate Birth, He felt no contagion from human corruption, and His heavenly Majesty drove it away. If we are to follow the letter and say that every male that openeth the womb is holy, how shall we explain that so many have been unrighteous? Was Ahab holy? Were the false prophets holy? Were they holy on whom Elijah justly called down fire from heaven? But He to Whom the sacred commandment of the law of God is mystically directed is the Holy One of Israel; Who also alone hath opened the secret womb of His holy Virgin-bride the Church, filling her with a sinless fruitfulness to give birth to Christian souls.

Martyrology {anticipated}
The morrow is the Octave of holy Stephen the Proto-Martyr. At Rome are commemorated upon the same day many holy martyrs who defied the edict of the Emperor Diocletian whereby it was commanded to give up the holy books, they being willing rather to give over their own bodies to the executioners than to give unto dogs that which was holy.
January 2nd 2026, the 13th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Antioch, blessed Isidore, Bishop (in the year 420).
At Tomi, in Pontus, under Emperor Licinius, the three holy brethren, Argeus, Narcissus, and Marcellinus.
Argeus and Narcissus were slain with the sword. Marcellinus was a boy, he was taken among the recruits, and for as much as he would not be a soldier he was grievously flogged, and after suffering long in prison was drowned in the sea (in the year 320.)
