Breve Nessuno ignora 14 Giugno 1892
Allorché giunse il tempo fissato dai suoi decreti per il compimento della grand'opera dell'umano riscatto, che i secoli da tempo attendevano, il Dio di misericordia ne dispose in tal guisa l'ordine e l'economia, che gl'inizi di quest'opera offrissero al mondo l'augusto spettacolo d'una Famiglia divinamente costituita, nella quale tutti gli uomini potessero contemplare l'esemplare più perfetto della società domestica e d'ogni virtù e santità. Tale fu infatti questa famiglia di Nazaret, in cui, prima d'irradiare su tutte le nazioni lo splendore della sua piena luce, il Sole di giustizia, cioè il Cristo Dio nostro Salvatore, dimorò nascosto colla Vergine sua Madre e Giuseppe, uomo santissimo, che ricopriva a riguardo di Gesù l'ufficio di padre. Quanto alle mutue prove d'amore, alla santità di costumi, all'esercizio della pietà nella società famigliare e nelle relazioni abituali di quelli che vivono sotto un medesimo tetto, non si può senza verun dubbio trovare a celebrare alcuna virtù che non rifulgesse in sommo grado in questa sacra Famiglia destinata a divenire il modello di tutte le altre. E la Provvidenza la stabilì così nel suo disegno pieno di bontà, perché tutti i cristiani, di qualsiasi condizione o patria, possano facilmente, se la riguardano con attenzione, avere e l'esempio di ogni virtù e un invito a praticarla.

I padri di famiglia hanno sicuramente in Giuseppe un modello ammirabile della vigilanza e sollecitudine paterna: le madri hanno nella santa Vergine, Madre di Dio, un esempio insigne di amore, di rispetto modesto e della sottomissione d'un'anima di fede perfetta: i figli di famiglia hanno in Gesù, sottomesso ai suoi genitori, un divino esempio d'obbedienza d'ammirare, onorare, imitare. Quelli che sono nati nobili, apprenderanno da questa Famiglia di sangue reale a conservare la moderazione nella prosperità e la dignità nelle afflizioni: i ricchi riconosceranno a questa scuola quanto siano da stimarsi meno le ricchezze che le virtù. Gli operai poi e tutti quelli che soffrono tanto per le angustie del sostegno d'una famiglia e d'una condizione povera, se guardano ai membri santissimi di questa società domestica, non mancherà loro né motivo né occasione di rallegrarsi della sorte loro toccata piuttosto che di rattristarsene. Difatti le fatiche loro sono ad essi comuni colla Sacra Famiglia, e comuni con essa le cure della vita quotidiana: anche Giuseppe dové provvedere guadagnandosi il pane, al sostegno dei suoi; e anzi, le stesse mani divine s'esercitarono al lavoro di un'arte meccanica. Non è dunque a stupire se uomini sapientissimi aventi copiose ricchezze, abbiano voluto rinunziarvi per scegliere la povertà e trovarsi uniti con Gesù, Maria e Giuseppe.

Per tutti questi motivi a buon dritto il culto della Sacra Famiglia, prontamente affermatosi fra i cattolici, ogni giorno più prende sviluppo. Come lo provano sia le associazioni cristiane istituite sotto il nome della Sacra Famiglia, sia gli onori singolari che le furono resi, e soprattutto i privilegi e favori spirituali accordati dai nostri predecessori per eccitare verso di essa lo zelo della pietà. Questo culto pertanto fu in grande onore fin dal secolo XVII, e propagato ovunque in Italia, Francia e Belgio si sparse quasi in tutta Europa; quindi valicate le immensità degli Oceani, si estese nella regione del Canada nell'America per fiorirvi sotto i più felici auspici. Niente infatti si può trovare di più salutare e più utile per le famiglie cristiane che l'esempio della Sacra Famiglia, la quale abbraccia la perfezione e l'insieme di tutte le virtù domestiche. Implorati così in seno alle famiglie, Gesù, Maria e Giuseppe verranno in loro aiuto, vi conserveranno la carità, vi regoleranno i costumi e ne provocheranno; membri ad imitarne la virtù e addolciranno o renderanno sopportabili le mortali prove che ci minacciano da ogni parte. Ad accrescere sempre più il culto della Sacra Famiglia, Papa Leone XIII ordinò di consacrare le famiglie cristiane a questa Sacra Famiglia: e Benedetto XV ne ha esteso l'Ufficio e la Messa a tutta la Chiesa.

E stava loro sottomesso Luc. 2,52. Chi? a chi? Un Dio a degli uomini; sì, il Dio cui sono sottomessi gli Angeli, cui obbediscono i Principati e le Potestà stava sottomesso a Maria, e non soltanto a Maria, ma anche a Giuseppe a cagione di Maria. Ammira dunque l'uno e l'altro, e scegli quel che ti pare più ammirabile, se la benignissima condiscendenza del Figlio o la gloriosissima dignità della Madre. Da ogni parte stupore, da ogni parte miracolo: che un Dio obbedisca a una donna è un'umiltà senza esempio; e che una donna comandi a un Dio è una sublimità senza eguale. Nelle lodi riserbate ai vergini, si canta in particolare ch'essi seguono l'Agnello ovunque vada Apoc. 14,4. Ebbene, di quali lodi non giudicherai degna chi gli va anche dinanzi?

Uomo, impara ad obbedire; terra, impara a sottostare; polvere, impara a sottometterti. L'Evangelista parlando del tuo autore: «E stava, dice, loro sottomesso»; cioè senza dubbio a Maria e a Giuseppe. Vergognati, cenere orgogliosa! Un Dio si abbassa, e tu ti esalti? Un Dio si assoggetta agli uomini, e tu, cercando di dominare gli uomini, ti metti al disopra del tuo autore? O se Dio, allorché penso così, si degnasse rispondermi ciò che, riprendendolo, rispose al suo Apostolo: «Va lontano da me, satana, perché tu non comprendi quel ch'è di Dio»! Matth. 16,23. Difatti, ogni volta che desidero preminenza fra gli uomini, ogni volta mi sforzo di passare davanti a Dio; e allora veramente non sento quel ch'è di Dio. Ché di lui è detto: «E stava loro sottomesso» Luc. 2,52. O uomo, se disdegni d'imitare l'esempio d'un uomo, certo non sarà indegno di te seguire il tuo fattore. Se non puoi forse seguirlo dovunque vada, degnati almeno di seguirlo fin dove egli volle discendere per te.

Se non puoi camminare per il sentiero sublime della verginità, segui almeno il tuo Dio nel sentiero sicurissimo dell'umiltà; e se uno, anche dei vergini, devierà da questa retta via, a dire il vero, neppure essi seguiranno l'Agnello ovunque vada. L'umile ch'è macchiato, sì, segue l'Agnello, lo segue anche il vergine orgoglioso, ma nessun dei due lo segue dovunque vada; perché né il primo può elevarsi alla purezza dell'Agnello ch'è senza macchia, né il secondo si degna discendere alla dolcezza di questo stesso (Agnello), che ammutolì non solo davanti a chi lo tosava, ma ancora davanti a colui che l'uccideva. Nonpertanto il peccatore, umiliandosi, ha scelto una parte migliore dell'orgoglioso vergine, essendo che l'umile soddisfazione di quello lava la sua immondezza, mentre l'orgoglio di questo insozza la sua purezza.

When God in his mercy determined to accomplish the work of man's renewal, which same had so many long ages awaited, he appointed and ordained this work on such wise that its very beginning might shew to the world the august spectacle of a Family which was known to be divinely constituted; that therein all men might behold a perfect model, as well of domestic life as of every virtue and pattern of holiness: for such indeed was the Holy Family of Nazareth. There in secret dwelt the Sun of Righteousness, until the time when he should shine out in full splendour in the sight of all nations. There Christ, our God and Saviour, lived with his Virgin Mother, and with that most holy man Joseph, who held to him the place of father. No one can doubt that in this Holy Family was displayed every virtue which can be called forth by an ordinary home life, with its mutual services of charity, its holy intercourse, and its practices of godly piety, since the Holy Family was destined to be a pattern to all others. For that very reason was it established by the merciful designs of Providence, namely, that every Christian, in every walk of life and in every place, might easily, if he would but give heed to it, have before him a motive and a pattern for the good life.

Reading 5
To all fathers of families, Joseph is verily the best model of paternal vigilance and care. In the most holy Virgin Mother of God, mothers may find an excellent example of love, modesty, resignation of spirit, and the perfecting of faith. And in Jesus, who was subject to his parents, the children of the family have a divine pattern of obedience which they can admire, reverence, and imitate. Those who are of noble birth may learn, from this Family of royal blood, how to live simply in times of prosperity, and how to retain their dignity in times of distress. The rich may learn that moral worth is to be more highly esteemed than wealth. Artisans, and all such as are bitterly grieved by the narrow and slender means of their families, if they would but consider the sublime holiness of the members of this domestic fellowship, cannot fail to find some cause for rejoicing in their lot, rather than for being merely dissatisfied with it. In common with the Holy Family, they have to work, and to provide for the daily wants of life. Joseph had to engage in trade, in order to live; even the divine hands laboured at an artisan's calling. It is not to be wondered at, that the wealthiest men, if truly wise, have been willing to cast away their riches, and to embrace a life of poverty with Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

From the foregoing it is evident how natural and fitting it was that devotion to the Holy Family should in due time have grown up amongst Catholics; and once begun, that it should spread far and wide. Proof of this lieth first in the sodalities instituted under the ínvocation of the Holy Family; then in the unique honours bestowed upon it; and above all, by the privileges and favours granted to this devotion by our predecessors to stimulate fervour and piety in its regard. This devotion was already held in great esteem in the seventeenth century. Widely propagated in Italy, France, and Belgium, it spread over almost the whole of Europe; thence, crossing the wide ocean, through Canada it made is way in the Americas, and finding favour there, became very flourishing. Indeed, among Christian families, nothing more salutary nor efficacious can be imagined than the example of the Holy Family, where are to be found all domestic virtues in perfection and completeness. When Jesus, Mary, and Joseph are invoked in the home, charity is likely to be maintained in the family through their example and heavenly entreaty; a good influence is thus exerted over conduct; the practice of virtue is thus incited; and thus the hardships which are everywhere wont to harass mankind, are both mitigated and made easier to bear. To increase devotion to the Holy Family, Pope Leo XIII prescribed that Christian families should be consecrated thereto. Benedict XV extended the Mass and Office to the whole Church.

In praise of virgins it is sung of them alone, that they follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. Of what praise do ye judge that woman to be worthy who is thus placed before the Lamb of God.

At Rome, the holy martyr Tatiana, in the persecution under the Emperor Alexander. She was lacerated with hooks and combs, thrown to wild beasts, and cast into the fire, but as she remained unhurt, was at length beheaded, and so passed away to heaven.
In the Peloponnesos, the holy martyr Satyrus. As he was passing before a certain idol he breathed upon it, and signed himself with the sign of the cross upon his own forehead, whereupon the idol straightway fell down, and for this cause Satyrus was beheaded, (in the year 267.)
Upon the same day, (in Morocco, in the year 259) the holy martyr Arcadius, eminent for his rank and his miracles.
