Giovanni, nato ad Antiochia e per l'aureo fiume della sua eloquenza appellato Crisostomo, dal foro e dagli affari del secolo passò allo studio delle divine lettere acquistandosi somma lode per il suo ingegno e scienza. Iniziato pertanto agli ordini sacri e poi fatto prete della chiesa d'Antiochia, dopo la morte di Nettario fu, per opera dell'imperatore Arcadio, preposto, suo malgrado, alla chiesa di Costantinopoli. Ricevuta la carica di pastore, cominciò ad insorgere con forza contro la corruzione dei costumi e la vita licenziosa dei grandi: ma questa libertà gli procurò grande avversione da parte di molti. Egli offese pure gravemente l'imperatrice Eudossia per averla ripresa d'essersi appropriato il denaro della vedova Callitropa, e del campo di un'altra vedova.

Perciò radunatasi a Calcedonia un'assemblea di alcuni vescovi, alla quale egli, invitato, si ricusò di andare, dicendo non essere un concilio né pubblico né legittimo, per gli sforzi sopratutto di Eudossia fu mandato in esilio: ma poco dopo, avendo il popolo tumultuato per il desiderio di riaverlo, fu richiamato dall'esilio con straordinario plauso della città. Ma non cessando egli di gridare contro i vizi, ed essendosi opposto a certi giuochi davanti alla statua argentea di Eudossia sulla piazza di santa Sofia, una cospirazione di vescovi nemici lo costrinse di nuovo a partire per l'esilio, mentre le vedove e i poveri tutti piangevano il bando del comune padre. È incredibile quanti mali soffrì il Crisostomo nell'esilio, e quante persone convertì alla fede di Gesù Cristo.

Ma mentre un decreto di Papa Innocenzo 1°, fatto in un concilio tenuto a Roma, lo restituiva alla sua sede, ebbe a soffrire nel viaggio incredibili mali e privazioni da parte dei soldati che lo sorvegliavano. Nell'attraversare l'Armenia, san Basilisco Martire, nella cui chiesa egli aveva prima pregato, così gli parlò di notte: Fratello Giovanni, domani saremo insieme nello stesso luogo. Quindi preso il giorno dopo il sacramento dell'Eucaristia e munitosi del segno della croce, rese l'anima a Dio, il 14 di Settembre. Appena morto, una terribile grandine cadde su Costantinopoli, e dopo quattro giorni l'Imperatrice cessò di vivere. Teodosio, figlio d'Arcadio, fece trasportare il suo corpo a Costantinopoli con insigne pompa in mezzo a grande affluenza di popolo il 27 di Gennaio: e dopo averne venerate le reliquie, domandò perdono per i suoi parenti: trasportato poi a Roma fu sepolto nella basilica Vaticana. Tutti ammirano il numero, la pietà, la bellezza dei suoi discorsi e degli altri suoi scritti, la maniera ancora d'interpretare i libri sacri e di spiegarli attenendosi al senso letterale; e sembra, come ne lo stimano degno, che l'Apostolo Paolo, che egli venerava particolarmente, e nello scrivere e nel predicare gli dettasse molte cose. Pio X poi, Pontefice massimo, dichiarò e stabilì questo insigne Dottore della Chiesa celeste patrono dei sacri oratori.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e tutta la terra è ripiena della sua dottrina:

Fate attenzione a ciò che disse, «Voi siete il sale della terra»: tramite ciò mostra quanto necessariamente insegni queste cose. Non infatti, disse, solo della vostra vita, ma di tutto il mondo dovrete render conto. Non vi mando certo solo a due città, o a dieci, o a venti, come mandavo i profeti: ma ad ogni terra e fino al mare, e a tutto il mondo, e questo è oppresso da vari crimini.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,
* e l'ha incoronato alle porte del paradiso.

Dicendo infatti, «Voi siete il sale della terra», mostra che tutta la natura degli uomini è vanificata, e corrotta dalla violenza dei peccati: e quindi richiede da loro quelle virtù, che massimamente sono necessarie ed utili per procurare la salvezza di molti. Infatti chi è mansueto e modesto, e misericordioso e giusto, non rinchiude solo dentro di sé queste cose fatte bene, ma farà defluire queste eccellenti fonti anche all'utilità degli altri. Quindi chi è puro di cuore e pacifico, e e sopporta la persecuzione per la verità, nondimeno stabilisce la vita per il bene comune.

Non pensate quindi, disse, che sarete condotti a facile battaglie, né che dovrete far conto di cose da poco. Voi siete il sale della terra. Cosa allora? Hanno medicato cose putrefatte? Per niente: né infatti è possibile che quelle cose che sono già corrotte siano riparate tramite la frizione del sale. Non fecero perciò questo, ma le cose prima rinnovate, ed a loro affidate, e già liberate da quella putrefazione, aspergevano di sale, e conservavano in quella novità, che avevano preso dal Signore. Certamente liberare dalla putredine del peccato, è proprio del potere di Cristo: ma ché non ritornino di nuovo a questi, è proprio della cura e del lavoro degli Apostoli.

John of Antioch, who, on account of the golden stream of his eloquence, is called by the Greeks Chrysostomos, or, the golden-mouthed, was a lawyer and man of the world of much eminence, before he turned his great intellect and wonderful industry to the study of things sacred. He took orders, and was ordained a priest of the Church of Antioch, in the year of our Lord 386, and after the death of Nectarius, was forced by the Emperor Arcadius to accept, though sorely against his own will, the Archbishopric of Constantinople. Having received the burden of a shepherd's office, (upon the 26th day of February,) in the year 398, he set himself zealously to do his duty, struggling against the degradation of public morality and the loose lives of the nobility, and thereby drew upon himself the ill-will of many enemies, especially the Empress Eudoxia, whom he had rebuked on account of the money of the widow Callitropa, and the land of another widow.

Come Bishops being assembled in a Council at Chalcedon, which Council the Saint held to be neither lawful, nor public, although he was commanded to go there, he refused. Whereupon Eudoxia, striving earnestly against him, caused him to be sent into exile. Soon after, however, the people of the city rose, and demanded his recall, and he was then brought back again amid great public rejoicings. Nevertheless he ceased not to war against vice, and absolutely forbade the celebration of public games round the silver statue of Eudoxia in the square outside the Church of the Eternal Wisdom. Upon this, a party of Bishops, who were enemies to him, banded together, and obtained that he should be banished again, which was done accordingly, on the 20th day of June, 404, amid the lamentations of widows and the poor, who felt as if they were being deprived of a common father. During this exile, it almost passeth belief how much Chrysostom suffered, and how many souls he turned to the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

At this time a Council was assembled at Rome, wherein Chrysostom's restoration to his See was decreed by Pope Innocent I., but meanwhile, he was suffering great hardships and cruelties on his journey at the hands of the soldiers who had him in charge. As he passed through Armenia he prayed in the Church of the holy martyr Basiliscus, and the same night that blessed conqueror appeared to him in a vision and said Brother John, to-morrow thou shalt be with me. On the next day, therefore, he received the Sacrament of the Eucharist, and, arming himself with the sign of the cross, resigned his soul to God, it being the 14th of September, in the year of salvation, 407. As soon as he was dead a furious hailstorm took place at Constantinople, and after four days the Empress died. The Emperor Theodosius, the son of Arcadius, brought the body of John Chrysostom to Constantinople with great state, and numerously attended, and on the 27th of January, 438, laid it with magnificent honours in the grave, beside which he prayed for the forgiveness of his own father and mother. The holy body was afterwards taken to Rome, and is now buried in the Vatican Basilica. The number, devoutness, and brilliance of St. John Chrysostom's sermons and other writings, his acuteness in exposition, and the close aptness of his explanations of Holy Scripture, have been and are the object of universal wonder and admiration, and often seem not unworthy to have been dictated to him by the Apostle Paul, for whom he entertained a wonderful devotion.

Consider how that the Lord saith: “Ye are the salt of the earth,” by the which figure He showeth what a necessary of life is the Gospel. By this figure, He hath us to know that they unto whom He spake have an account to render, not of their own life only, but for the whole world. Not unto two cities, saith the Lord, nor unto ten, nor unto twenty, nor unto one people, as I sent the Prophets, send I you. But I send you unto every land and sea, even unto the whole world, lying groaning, as it is, under the burden of diverse sins.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. The Lord loved him and beautified him He clothed him with a robe of glory

Martyrology {anticipated}
The feast of the holy Confessor Peter Nolasco, founder of the Order of Blessed Mary of Ransom, for the redemption of captives, who fell asleep in the Lord upon Christmas Eve.
At Rome, the second Feast of holy Agnes.
January 28th 2026, the 9th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome likewise, the holy martyr Flavian, who suffered in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian.
At Apollonia, the holy martyrs Thyrsus, Leucius, Callinicus. In the time of the Emperor Decius they were tortured in diverse ways. Whereafter, Thyrsus and Callinicus were beheaded, and a voice from heaven called away Leucius, and he gave up the ghost, (in the year 250.)
In the Thebaid, the holy martyrs Leonides and his companions, who secured the palm of martyrdom in the time of the Emperor Diocletian.
At Alexandria, a multitude of holy martyrs, who upon this day were gathered together in a church at Communion, when they were massacred in diverse ways by the followers of the Arian Duke Syrianus, (in the year 376.) Likewise at Alexandria, the holy Confessor Cyril, Pope of that city a most eminent champion of the Catholic faith, and illustrious for his teaching and holiness, who fell asleep in peace, (in the year 444.) whose feast we keep upon the 9th day of February.
At Zaragoza, (in the year 315,) holy Valerius, Bishop of that city.
At Cuenca, in Spain, holy Julian, Bishop of that city, who gave the goods of his Church to the poor, and sought his food by working with his own hands after the manner of the Apostles, and fell asleep in peace, famous for miracles, (in the year 1207.) In the monastery of Rheims, (in the year 545,) the holy Priest John, a man of God.
In Palestine, (in the sixth century,) the holy Hermit James, who, having fallen away, hid himself for a long time in a sepulchre to do penance, and passed away hence to be ever with the Lord, famous for miracles.
