Francesco nacque nel castello di Sales, donde il cognome di famiglia, da pii e nobili genitori, e fin dai più teneri anni diede indizio della santità futura colla sua innocenza e gravità. Ancora adolescente istruito nelle scienze liberali, si diede tosto a Parigi allo studio della filosofia e teologia e, perché non mancasse nulla alla cultura del suo spirito, ottenne a Padova con somma lode la laurea in diritto canonico e civile. Nel santuario di Loreto rinnovò il voto di perpetua verginità, che aveva già fatto a Parigi; dal voto della quale virtù non poté mai essere distolto né da nessun artifizio del diavolo né da nessun attrattiva dei sensi.

Ricusata una gran dignità nel senato di Savoia, si ascrisse alla milizia clericale. Indi ordinato sacerdote e fatto parroco della chiesa di Ginevra, adempì così perfettamente i doveri del suo ufficio, che il vescovo Granier lo destinò banditore della parola di Dio per la conversione dall'eresia dei Calvinisti dello Chablois e delle popolazioni confinanti con Ginevra. Egli intraprese questa spedizione con animo lieto, ma ebbe a soffrire le più dure prove; spesso gli eretici lo cercarono a morte e lo perseguitarono con diverse calunnie ed insidie. Ma fra tanti pericoli e lotte, rifulse sempre la sua inalterabile costanza; e protetto dall'aiuto di Dio, si narra aver ricondotto alla fede cattolica settantaduemila eretici, tra i quali molti illustri per nobiltà e dottrina.

Morto Granier, che aveva disegnato di farselo dare per coadiutore, egli consacrato vescovo, sparse per ogni dove i raggi della sua santità, e si rese illustre per lo zelo della disciplina ecclesiastica, l'amore della pace, la misericordia verso i poveri e per ogni genere di virtù. Per accrescere il culto divino istituì un nuovo ordine di religiose sotto il nome della Visitazione della beata Vergine, e sotto la regola di sant'Agostino; dando loro delle costituzioni ammirabili per sapienza, discrezione e dolcezza. Illustrò pure la Chiesa coi suoi scritti ripieni di celeste dottrina, nei quali indica un cammino sicuro e facile per giungere alla perfezione cristiana. Infine, a cinquantacinque anni di età, nel ritornare dalla Francia ad Annecy, dopo aver celebrato la Messa a Lione il giorno di san Giovanni Evangelista, colpito da grave malattia, il giorno dopo salì al cielo, nell'anno del Signore 1622. Il suo corpo trasportato ad Annecy, fu sepolto onorevolmente nella chiesa delle monache del detto ordine e, subito, cominciò a risplendere per miracoli. I quali provati canonicamente, Alessandro VII, Pontefice massimo, lo annoverò fra i Santi, assegnando alla sua festa il 29 di Gennaio; e il sommo Pontefice Pio IX con decreto della sacra Congregazione dei Riti, lo dichiarò Dottore della Chiesa universale.

Voi siete la luce del mondo Mt 5, 14. Come prima ha detto: sale della terra, così ora dice: luce del mondo. Difatti neanche prima per terra si deve intendere quella che calpestiamo con i piedi, ma gli uomini che vivono sulla terra, o anche i peccatori, perché il Signore ha inviato il sale apostolico per condirli e impedirne la putrefazione. E qui per mondo è opportuno intendere non il cielo e la terra, ma gli uomini che sono nel mondo o amano il mondo, perché gli apostoli sono stati inviati a illuminarli. Non può rimanere nascosta una città collocata sul monte, cioè fondata su una insigne e grande onestà, simboleggiata anche dal monte in cui il Signore sta insegnando.

He refused to be made Counsellor of the Parliament of Chambery, for which his family had obtained for him patents from the Duke of Savoy, and determined to become a clergyman. He was appointed to the Provostship of the Church of Geneva, and, being shortly afterwards ordained Priest, discharged so admirably the duties of his position, that he was sent by Granier, his Bishop, to preach the word of God in Chablais, and other places in the outskirts of the diocese, where the inhabitants had embraced the heresy of Calvin. He joyfully undertook this mission, in which he suffered much, being often hunted by the Protestants to murder him, and assailed by many calumnies and plots. Amid all these dangers and struggles his constancy remained invincible, and under the blessing and care of God he is said to have recalled seventy-two thousand of these heretics to the Faith of Christ's Universal Church, among whom were many distinguished by rank and learning.

Reading 6
After the death of Bishop Granier, who had procured his appointment as Coadjutor, he was consecrated Bishop, upon the 3rd day of December, 1602. In that office he was truly a burning and a shining light, showing all around a bright example of godliness, zeal for the discipline of the Church, ardent love of peace, tenderness to the poor, and, indeed, of all graces. For the greater ornament of God's worship he established a new Order of Nuns, which is named from the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin. These nuns follow the Rule of St. Augustine, but Francis added thereto several additional constitutions distinguished by wisdom, prudence, and tenderness. He enlightened the Church by writings full of heavenly teaching, and pointing out a safe and simple road to Christian perfection. In the 55th year of his age, while on his way from France to Annecy, after saying mass at Lyons on the Feast of St. John the Evangelist, he was seized with fatal illness, and on the next day passed from earth to heaven, in the year of our Lord 1622. His body was carried to Annecy and honourably buried in the Church of the nuns of the Visitation, where it soon began to be distinguished for miracles. The truth of these having been proved, the Supreme Pontiff, Alexander VI L, enrolled his name among those of the Saints, and appointed for his Feast-day the 29th of January. And the Supreme Pontiff, Pius IX., on the advice of the Congregation of Sacred Rites, declared him a Doctor of the Universal Church.

The Lord would have us understand how that men do lose their power of savouring others with righteousness when they are willing to place their eternal welfare in jeopardy for the sake of any témporal advantage, like as attainment of ease or luxury, or escape from suffering or toil. For that which is eternal, unlike things of this world, can neither be bestowed by men, nor by them taken away. Hence, when he asketh: If the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? he would have us understand the question to be: If ye, by whom mankind is preserved from corruption, be willing to lose the kingdom of heaven so as to escape trials or persecutions in this world, who is there to preserve you from corruption, seeing ye are they that God hath chosen to preserve all others from corruption?
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

For no one can be trodden upon, unless he be beneath him which treadeth upon him. And certainly no one who hath his heart in heaven, no matter how grievously he doth suffer in his body on earth, is rightly said to be beneath anyone who misuseth him.

Ye are the light of the world. And we are to understand the word World in the same sense as the word Earth when he spoke above of the salt of the earth, that is, not that earth whereupon we walk with our bodily feet, but the men which dwell upon the earth; in other words, sinners, for the sweetening and correction of whose corruption, the Lord hath sent his Apostles, as it were, as so much salt. And so by the world we are to understand, not the heaven and the earth, but the men who are in the world and love the world, for the enlightening of whom the Apostles have been sent. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid: that is, what is founded upon the heights of righteousness, whereof the mountain upon which the Lord gave this discourse was itself a figure, is magnificent in the eyes of all men.

Ad Edéssa, nella Siria, san Barsiméo Vescovo, il quale, avendo convertito moltissimi pagani alla fede e mandatili innanzi a ricevere la corona, li seguì, sotto Traiano, con la palma del martirio.
Ad Antiochia la passione del beato Ippolito Prete, il quale, ingannato per qualche tempo dallo scisma di Novàto, ma ravvedutosi per opera della grazia di Cristo, tornò all'unità della Chiesa, per la quale e nella quale poi compì un glorioso martirio. Interrogato dai suoi qual fosse la vera fede, detestò il dogma di Novàto, e, dicendo doversi tenere quella fede che è custodita dalla Cattedra di Piétro, porse il collo alla spada.
Nell'Africa la passione dei santi Martiri Feliciàno, Filappiàno ed altri centoventiquattro.
Così pure il beato Alessàndro, il quale fu catturato nella persecuzione di Décio, e, risplendendo per la veneranda canizie della longeva età e per la replicata confessione, tra i tormenti dei carnefici rese lo spirito.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy virgin and Martyr Martina, (third century,) of whom mention is made upon the 1st day of January.
January 30th 2026, the 11th day of the Moon, were born into a better life:

At Antioch, the blessed martyr Hippolytus, (third century.) He was a Priest who had been led astray into the Novatian schism, but by the operation of the grace of Christ had corrected himself, and had returned into the unity of the Church, for which and within which he afterwards achieved a noble martyrdom. When he was asked by his people which were the true Body, he denied the doctrine of Novatus, and declared that the faith which men ought to keep is the faith which the See of Peter keepeth, and so offered his neck to the executioner.
In Africa, the holy martyrs Felician, Philappian, and 124 others.
At Edessa, in Syria, the holy martyr Barsimceus, Bishop of that city, who converted many Gentiles to the faith, and sent them before him to the crown, but himself followed them with the palm of martyrdom under the Emperor Trajan, (second century.) Likewise, at Edessa, holy Barsen, Bishop of that See, who was famous for the grace of healing, but who on account of his Catholic belief was banished to the uttermost parts of that country by the Arian Emperor Valens, and there finished his earthly life, (in the year 379.)
Likewise the blessed Alexander. He was arrested in the persecution under the Emperor Decius, and died under the torture, (in the year 251,) venerable for his grey hairs and illustrious for his repeated confession.
At Jerusalem, holy Matthias, Patriarch of that place, (in the second century,) of whom are narrated wondrous acts of faith. He suffered much for Christ's sake under the Emperor Hadrian, but at length fell asleep in peace.
At Rome, holy Pope Felix (IV, Pope in 526, died in 530,) who laboured much for the Catholic faith.
At Pavia, the holy Confessor Armentarius, Bishop of that See, (in the year 730.)
In the monastery of Maubeuge, in Hainaut, in the time of King Dagobert, the holy Virgin Aldegundis, (about the year 689.)
At Milan, holy Savina, a devout woman, who fell asleep in the Lord, (in the year 311,) while she was praying at the graves of the holy martyrs Nabor and Felix.
At Viterbo, the holy Virgin Hyacinth de' Mariscotti, (in the year 1640,) a nun of the Third Order of St. Francis, eminent for penitence and for love, whose name Pope Pius VII enrolled with those of the saints.
