Rifocilliamo il corpo con ristori, affinché, estenuato, non venga meno; lo estenuiamo coll'astinenza, affinché, ben nutrito, non ci opprima: ne manteniamo il vigore col moto, affinché, immobilizzato, non perisca; ma subito sostiamo per farlo riposare, onde non soccomba sotto lo stesso suo esercizio lo copriamo con vesti, affinché il freddo non lo uccida; e gettiam via le vesti già cercate, affinché il caldo non lo consumi. Provvedendo dunque a tante diverse necessità, che cosa facciamo noi se non vivere alla dipendenza della sua corruzione, e sostenere, con una moltitudine di cure, questo corpo che accasciano l'inquietudine, l'infermità e il cambiamento?

Lettura 5
Onde con ragione Paolo dice: «La creatura è stata assoggettata alla vanità non per volontà sua, ma di colui che ve l'assoggettò, colla speranza che anch'essa sarà liberata dalla schiavitù della corruzione per aver parte alla gloriosa libertà dei figli di Dio» Rom. 8, 20. La creatura dunque è soggetta alla vanità contro suo volere perché l'uomo, che rinunziò volontariamente allo stato di immortalità che gli era connaturale, assoggettato giustamente al peso della mortalità, è costretto, sebbene contro voglia, a dipendere dalla sua mutabilità e corruzione. Ma questa creatura allora sarà affrancata dalla schiavitù della corruzione, quando, risorgendo incorrotta, sarà sollevata alla gloria dei figli di Dio.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Quaggiù dunque gli eletti sono incatenati nella sofferenza, perché sono ancora oppressi da questo penoso stato di corruzione: ma quando saremo spogliati di questa carne corruttibile, saremo liberati da questi molesti legami, che ora ci tengono schiavi. Noi già desideriamo di comparire alla presenza di Dio, ma ancora ne siamo impediti dall'ostacolo di questo corpo mortale. Con ragione pertanto possiamo dirci incatenati, perché noi non abbiamo ancora presso Dio il libero accesso che desideriamo. Onde rettamente Paolo, desiderando i beni eterni, ma carico ancora del fardello della mortalità e incatenato, esclama: «Bramo d'essere sciolto, ed essere con Cristo» Philipp. 1, 23. Ora, non cercherebbe d'essere sciolto, se certamente non si vedesse legato.

Gesù fece il quinto miracolo, quando, montato nella barca a Cafarnao, comandò ai venti e al mare. Il sesto, quando nella regione dei Geraseni, diede potere ai demoni sui porci. Il settimo quando, entrando nella sua città, guarì il secondo paralitico nel letto. Perché il primo paralitico guarito è il servo del centurione.

Lettura 8
«Ma egli dormiva: allora (i discepoli) gli si accostarono, e lo svegliarono, dicendo: Signore, salvaci» Matth. 8, 24. Una figura di questo prodigio l'abbiamo in Giona, quando, in mezzo al pericolo di tutti, egli dorme tranquillamente ed è svegliato: e colla potenza e il misterioso secreto della sua passione, libera quelli che lo svegliano. «Allora alzatosi, comandò ai venti e al mare» Matth. 8, 26. Da ciò comprendiamo che tutte le creature riconoscono il loro Creatore. Perché o le riprenda o comandi loro, esse sentono il suo comando: non già perché condividiamo l'errore degli eretici, che credono tutti gli esseri animati, ma perché le creature, insensibili per noi, sono sensibili alla maestà del Creatore.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Due Serafini cantavano alternativamente:
* Santo, santo, santo è il Signore Dio degli eserciti: * Piena è tutta la terra della sua gloria.

Ande gli uomini ne restarono ammirati, e dicevano: «Chi è mai costui, al quale ubbidiscono i venti e

Che se qualcuno volesse contestare e pretendere che quelli che si meravigliavano erano i discepoli, noi risponderemo, che giustamente sono chiamati qui «gente» quelli che ancora non conoscevano la potenza del Salvatore.

The first man sick of the palsy that He cured was the centurion's servant.

Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea. From these words we understand that all things, which have been made, are sentient to their Maker. All things which He rebuketh or commandeth, hear His voice. This is not the error of the heretics who will have it that everything is quick, but part of the majesty of the Creator, Who maketh to feel Him things which we cannot make to feel us.

Domenica di Settuagesima, nella quale si depone il cantico del Signore « Allelùja ».
Sant'Ignazio, Vescovo di Antiochia e Martire, il quale subì gloriosamente il martirio il venti Dicembre.
A Smirne san Fiòrdo, Prete e Martire, il quale, dopo aver scritto apologie in difesa della fede cristiana, dopo lo squallore del carcere, dove colle sue esortazioni fortificò molti fratelli a sostenere il martirio, finalmente, straziato con vari tormenti, confitto con chiodi e posto sopra un rogo ardente, conseguì una beata fine per Cristo. Con lui patirono il martirio anche altre quindici persone.
A Ravénna san Sevèro Vescovo, che per i suoi eccellenti meriti fu eletto al segno di una colomba.
Nella città di Trois-Chàteaux, in Frància, san Pàolo Vescovo, la cui vita fu celebre per le virtù, e la preziosa morte fu resa illustre da miracoli.
Presso Kildare, in Irlanda, santa Brigida Vergine, che in prova della sua verginità, avendo toccato il legno dell'altare, lo fece diventare subito verde.
Presso Castel Fiorentino, in Toscàna, la beata Verdiana, Vergine reclusa, dell'Ordine di Vallombròsa.

Martyrology {anticipated}
February 1st 2026, the 13th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

Septuagesima Sunday, on which the canticle of the Lord, Alleluia, ceaseth to be said.
The holy martyr Ignatius, who ruled the church of Antioch as the third Bishop of that See in succession to the blessed Apostle Peter.
In the persecution under the Emperor Trajan he was condemned to be killed by wild beasts, and was sent to Rome in chains by command of the emperor. There, in the presence of the Senate, he was first put to most grievous torments and then thrown to lions, the which throttled him with their teeth, and so he was made Christ's offering, (in the year 107.)
At Smyrna, the holy martyr Pionius. He was a Priest who had written much controversial matter on behalf of the Christian faith. After suffering a foul imprisonment, during the which he strengthened many brethren by his exhortations to the enduring of martyrdom, he was put to many tortures and nailed upon a pyre, where he obtained a blessed end by being burnt for Christ's sake. And with him suffered fifteen others, (in the year 251.)
At Ravenna, holy Severus, (in the year 389,) Bishop of that city, to the which place he was chosen, on account of his extraordinary merits, through a miraculous sign in the form of a dove.
At Tron, in Gaul, (in the fifth century,) holy Paul, Bishop of that see, whose life shone with grace, and the preciousness of whose death is attested by miracles.
Upon the same day, holy Ephrem, Deacon of the church of Edessa, who after much work for the faith of Christ fell asleep in the Lord, eminent for holiness and teaching, in the time of the Emperor Valens, (in the year 378.)
In Ireland, (in the year 523,) the holy Virgin Brigid. At the moment that she bowed down her head to receive the hallowed veil, she chanced to touch the wooden steps of the altar with her hand, and in witness to her virginity the dry wood at once became green.
At Florence, in Tuscany, the blessed Virgin Veridiana, recluse, of the Order of Vallombrosa, (Castel Florentin, 1242.)
