Su Maria Madre di Dio Vergine incomparabile, lib. 15, c. 13
Seguendo san Giovanni Damasceno, sant'Atanasio e altri, perché non dobbiamo chiamare regina la vergine Maria, quando nelle Scritture sono esaltati il suo antenato David come famoso re e il Figlio suo come re dei re e signore dei dominanti, per l'eternità? Inoltre Maria è regina se la si unisce con coloro che, quasi come re, posseggono il regno dei cieli, assieme con Cristo, il re eterno: infatti essi sono eredi assieme a Gesù e siedono sul suo stesso trono, per usare una frase della Scrittura. Maria è regina non inferiore a nessun altro; anzi, è levata talmente al di sopra degli angeli e degli uomini, che nessuno può essere più alto e più santo di lei: infatti solo lei ha un figlio comune con il Padre. Al di sopra di sé vede solo il Padre e il Figlio, e al di sotto di sé ogni altra creatura.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Il grande sant'Atanasio disse con acutezza: «Maria deve esser ritenuta realmente non solo Madre di Dio, ma anche regina e signora, poiché quel Cristo che nacque da questa vergine Madre, è lui stesso Dio, signore e re». Si può attribuire a questa regina quello che si legge nei salmi: «Alla tua destra si è assisa la regina, vestita in laminato d'oro». Inoltre Maria è regina non soltanto del cielo, ma pure dei cieli, essendo la madre del re degli angeli, e l'amica e la sposa del re dei cieli. O Maria, nobile regina e madre fedele, nessuno ti implora senza essere aiutato e tutti ti siamo riconoscenti per le tue grazie: ti prego e ti supplico con insistenza e con rispetto, di accettare e di approvare questa manifestazione della mia devozione, di tener conto della mia offerta, non badando alla sua consistenza, ma alla mia buona volontà, e di raccomandarmi al tuo Figlio onnipotente.

Dai monumenti dell'antichità cristiana, dalle preghiere liturgiche, dall'innata devozione del popolo cristiano, dalle opere d'arte, da ogni parte abbiamo potuto raccogliere espressioni ed accenti, secondo i quali la vergine Madre di Dio consta primeggiare per la sua dignità regale; ed abbiamo anche provato come le ragioni che la sacra teologia ha dedotto dal tesoro della fede, confermino pienamente questa verità. Di tali testimonianze riportate si forma un concerto, la cui eco risuona larghissimamente per celebrare il sommo fastigio della regale dignità della Madre di Dio e degli uomini, che è al di sopra di ogni cosa creata, e che è stata «innalzata sopra i cori degli angeli, ai regni celesti». Essendoci poi fatta la convinzione, dopo mature e ponderate riflessioni, che verranno grandi vantaggi alla Chiesa, se questa verità, solidamente dimostrata, risplenderà più evidente davanti a tutti - quasi lucerna più luminosa posta sul suo candelabro - con la nostra autorità apostolica, decretiamo e istituiamo la festa di Maria Regina, da celebrarsi in tutto il mondo il giorno 31 maggio di ogni anno.

Sermone sulla regia dignità della Beata Maria Vergine
La beata vergine Maria è diventata madre del sommo Re mediante una maternità del tutto singolare, secondo quanto si sentì dire dall'angelo: «Ecco, concepirai e darai alla luce un figlio»; e inoltre: «Il Signore gli darà il trono di David suo padre, e regnerà sulla casa di Giacobbe in eterno e il suo regno non avrà fine». È come se dicesse apertamente: Concepirai e darai alla luce un figlio che è re, che eternamente abita sul suo trono regale, e per questo tu regnerai come madre del Re, e come Regina siederai tu pure sul trono regale. Se infatti è giusto che il figlio onori la madre, è altrettanto giusto che partecipi ad essa il trono regale; per questo, per il fatto cioè che la vergine Maria ha concepito colui che porta scritto sul suo femore «Re dei re e Signore dei dominanti», nell'istante stesso in cui concepì il Figlio di Dio, divenne Regina non soltanto della terra, ma anche del cielo. E questo era stato preannunciato nell'Apocalisse dove si dice : «Un grande prodigio apparve nel cielo: una donna vestita di sole, e la luna sotto i suoi piedi, e sul suo capo una corona di dodici stelle».

Anche riguardo alla sua gloria, Maria è regina illustre. Il Profeta esprime ciò in modo adeguato in quel salmo, che si riferisce in modo particolare a Cristo e alla vergine Maria. In esso si afferma in un primo luogo di Cristo: «Il tuo trono, o Dio, è eterno». Poco dopo si dice della Vergine: «Alla tua destra è assisa la regina». Ciò si riferisce alle qualità più elevate, e perciò viene attribuito alla gloria del cuore. Poi il testo prosegue: «Vestita in laminato d'oro»: qui si intende il vestito di quella gloriosa immortalità che Maria acquistò con l'assunzione. Non si può credere che il vestito che aveva circondato il Cristo e che sulla terra era stato santificato totalmente dal Verbo incarnato, fosse distrutto dalla corruzione. Come fu opportuno che Cristo donasse a sua Madre la grazia totale quando ella fu concepita, così fu pure opportuno che donasse la gloria completa con l'assunzione di sua Madre. Ne consegue che è da ritenere vero il fatto che la Vergine, entrata nella gloria con l'anima e con il corpo, sia assisa accanto al Figlio.

Commemorazione: S. Angelae Mericiae Virginis
Angela Merici, nata da pii genitori, fin dai primi anni diede grandi segni di virtù, usando frequentemente il cilicio e i flagelli e dedicandosi assiduamente alla preghiera. Dopo aver rinunziato al suo patrimonio e adottato l'abito e la regola del terz'ordine di san Francesco, al merito della verginità aggiunse la povertà evangelica, non trascurando alcun dovere di carità verso il prossimo. Nutrita molto frequentemente dalla ss. Eucarestia, era trasportata verso Dio da sì gran forza di amore, che spesso era rapita in estasi. A Brescia istituì una nuova congregazione di vergini con una disciplina particolare e con regole che richiamavano di continuo all'obbligo della santità. La sua congregazione venne posta sotto il patrocinio e il nome di sant'Orsola. Quasi settantenne, volò al cielo il 27 febbraio 1540. Clemente XIII ne ratificò e confermò con solenne decreto la devozione e Pio VII la iscrisse nel catalogo delle sante vergini.

On the Incomparable Virgin Mary, Mother of God
If we follow St. John Damascene, St. Athanasius and others, are we not forced to call Mary Queen, since her father David receiveth the highest praise in Scripture as a renowned king, and her son as King of kings and Lord of lords, reigning forever? She is Queen, moreover, when compared with the Saints who reign like kings in the heavenly kingdom, co-heirs with Christ, the great King, placed on the same throne with him, as the Scripture saith. And as Queen she is second to none of the elect, but in dignity is raised so high above both Angels and men that nothing can be higher or holier than she, who alone hath the same Son as God the Father, and who seeth above her only God and Christ, and below her creatures other than herself.

From the documents of ancient Christianity, from the prayers of the liturgy, from the innate religious sense of the Christian people, from works of art, from all sides we gather witnesses which assert that the Virgin Mother of God excelleth in queenly dignity. And we have set forth the reasons which sacred theology deduces from the treasury of divine faith to confirm the same truth. All these witnesses form a sort of chorus, proclaiming far and wide the supreme queenly honour granted to the Mother of God and man, who is above all created things and exalted over the choirs of Angels to reign in heaven. Sermon on the Royal Dignity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of the great King by reason of a noble kind of conception, according to the message given her by the Angel. Behold, he said, thou shalt conceive and shalt bring forth a son; and again, the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he shall be king over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end. This is as if to say in so many words, Thou wilt conceive and bear a son who is King, eternally reigning on the royal throne, and as Queen thou wilt be seated on the royal throne. For if it becometh a son to give honour to his mother, it is also fitting that he share his royal throne with her; and so the Virgin Mary, because she conceived him on whose thigh was written, King of kings and Lord of lords, was Queen not only of earth but also of heaven as soon as she conceived the Son of God. This is indicated in the Apocalypse where it saith: A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon was under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars.

Mary the Queen outshineth all others in glory, as the Prophet clearly showeth in the Psalm which particularly concerns Christ and the Virgin Mary. It first saith of Christ: Thy throne, O God, standeth forever and ever, and shortly thereafter of the Virgin: The Queen taketh her place at thy right hand, that is, in the position of highest blessedness, for it referreth to glory of soul. It continueth: In garments of gold, by which is meant the clothing of glorious immortality which was proper to the Virgin in her Assumption. For it could not be that the garment which clothed Christ, the garment completely sanctified on earth by the incarnate Word, should be the food of worms. As it was fitting for Christ to grant the fullness of grace to his Mother at her Conception, so was it fitting that he grant her the fullness of glory at her Assumption. And so we are to hold that the Virgin, glorious in soul and body, is enthroned next to her Son.

Mary the Queen is also the distributrix of grace. This is indicated in the book of Esther, where it is said: The little spring which grew into a river and was turned into a light and into the sun. The Virgin Mary, under the type of Esther, is compared to the outpouring of a spring and of light, because of the diffusion of grace for two uses, that is, for action and for contemplation. For the grace of God, which is a healing for the human race, descendeth to us through her as if through an aqueduct, since the dispensing of grace is attributed to the Virgin not as to its beginning, but because of her position through merit. By position the Virgin Mary is a most excellent Queen towards her people: she obtaineth forgiveness, overcometh strife, distributeth grace, and thereby she leadeth them to glory.

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 2 Giugno, Luna 16

A Roma il natale dei santi Martiri Marcellino Prete e Piétro Esorcista, i quali, sotto Diocleziano, in prigione ammaestrando molti nella fede, dopo crudele prigionia e moltissimi tormenti, dal Giudice Seréno furono decapitati nel luogo, detto Selva Nera, che poi, in onore dei Santi, cambiato nome, fu chiamato Selva Candida. I loro corpi furono sepolti nelle catacombe, vicino a san Tibùrzio, e il loro sepolcro fu poi adornato con versi da san Dàmaso Papa.
In Campania sant'Erasmo, Vescovo e Martire. Questi, sotto Diocleziàno Augusto, prima battuto con flagelli piombati, quindi percosso gravemente con bastoni, poi versatogli addosso resina, zolfo, piombo, pece, cera ed olio, rimase illeso; quindi a Fórmia, sotto Massimiano, fu tormentato di nuovo con diversi ed atrocissimi supplizi, ma fu conservato da Dio perchè confermasse gli altri; finalmente, chiamato dal Signore, illustre pel martirio, con santa fine si riposò. Il suo corpo fu in seguito trasportato a Gaéta.
A Lione, in Frància, i santi Martiri Potino Vescovo, Santo Diacono, Vézio Epàgato, Maturo, Póntico, Biblide, Attalo, Alessàndro e Blandina, con molti altri, i cui forti e ripetuti combattimenti, al tempo di Marco Aurélio Antonino e Lucio Vero, sono raccontati in una lettera scritta dalla Chiesa di Lione alle Chiese dell'Asia e della Frigia. Tra questi santa Blandina, di sesso più debole, di corpo più esile, di condizione più umile, sopportò più lunghi e più acerbi combattimenti, e perseverando sempre impavida, trapassata nella gola da una spada, seguì gli altri, che essa esortava alla palma.
Nell'isola di Màrmara, nella Propóntide, san Nicéforo, Vescovo di Costantinopoli, il quale fortissimo difensore delle paterne tradizioni, pel culto delle sante immagini, costantemente si oppose a Leone Armèno, Imperatore Iconoclasta, dal quale fu condannato all'esilio, ed ivi, avendo per quattordici anni sostenuto un lungo martirio, passò al Signore.

June 2nd 2026, the 16th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, the holy martyrs Marcellinus the priest, and Peter the Exorcist.
They were teaching the faith to many in prison in the time of Diocletian, when Serenus the judge, after putting them to terrible bonds and many torments, caused them to be beheaded at the place which was then called the Black Wood, but the name of which was afterwards changed in honor of the Saints, and called the White Wood.
Their bodies were buried in the crypt, hard by the body of holy Tibertius, and holy Pope Damasus in after-days decorated their grave with a set of verses.
In Campania, the holy martyr Elmo, Patriarch [of Antioch.] Under the Emperor Diocletian he was first hided with scourges laden with lead, then heavily beaten with cudgels, after which resin, sulphur, lead, pitch, wax, and oil were poured over him, but he still appeared unharmed.
Thereafter at Formi, under Maximian, he was tortured again with diverse and most cruel sufferings but God preserved him to strengthen others, until at length, famous for his testimony, he fell asleep in a holy death at the call of the Lord. His body was afterwards taken to Gaeta.
At Lyon, the holy martyrs Photinus the Bishop, Sanctus the Deacon, Vetius, Epagathus, Maturus, Ponticus, Biblides, Attalus, Alexander, and Blandina, with many others, whose mighty and constant contendings, in the time of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus and Lucius Verus, are written in the Epistle of the Church of Lyon to the Churches of Asia and Phrygia; among these the holy Blandina, weaker by sex, frailer in body, lower in social position, underwent contendings more long and more sharp, and remaining still inflexible, was slain by the sword, and so followed the others whom she had exhorted to victory.
