Omelia 60 al popolo d'Antiochia
Poiché il Verbo ha detto: «Questo è il mio corpo»; adoriamo e crediamo e contempliamolo cogli occhi dello spirito. Perché Cristo non ci ha dato nulla di sensibile; ma sotto cose sensibili ci dà tutto a comprendere. Lo stesso è nel battesimo: dove per mezzo di una cosa sensibile, cioè l'acqua, ci si conferisce il dono; ma spirituale è la cosa che si compie, cioè la rigenerazione e rinnovazione. Se tu non avessi il corpo, non ci sarebbe nulla di corporale nei doni ch'egli ti dà; ma perché l'anima è unita al corpo, perciò ti dona lo spirituale mediante il sensibile. Quanti ora dicono: Vorrei vedere la sua forma, la sua figura, le vesti, i calzari? Ebbene, tu lo vedi, lo tocchi, lo mangi. Tu desideri vederne le vesti, egli invece ti concede non solo di vederlo, ma ancora di mangiarlo, di toccarlo e di riceverlo dentro di te.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Mentre essi cenavano, Gesù prese del pane, lo benedisse, lo spezzò e lo diede ai suoi discepoli, dicendo;

Nessuno dunque si accosti con nausea, nessuno con trascuratezza; siano tutti ardenti, pieni di fervore e premurosi. Che se i Giudei mangiavano l'agnello (pasquale) in piedi, calzati e col bastone in mano, con premura; molto più tu devi avere questa sollecitudine. Perché mentre quelli dovevano partire per la Palestina e perciò erano in assetto di viaggiatori, tu invece devi emigrare al cielo. Quindi bisogna che tu sia vigilante in tutto; che si minaccia non piccola pena a chi si comunica indegnamente. Pensa quanto ti sdegni contro chi lo tradì e contro quelli che lo crocifissero: bada pertanto che anche tu non divenga colpevole del corpo e del sangue di Cristo. Quelli ne uccisero il corpo santissimo, ma tu lo ricevi coll'anima impura, dopo tanti benefici. Non contento d'essersi fatto uomo, d'essere stato schiaffeggiato e crocifisso, egli di più si unisce a noi così che noi diventiamo uno stesso corpo con lui, e non solo mediante la fede, ma effettivamente e in realtà.

Pensa a tutto l'onore che ne ricevi, a qual mensa prendi parte. Ciò che gli Angeli riguardano con tremore, e non possono mirare liberamente per lo splendore abbagliante, noi ne facciamo nostro alimento, ci uniamo ad esso e diventiamo con Cristo un solo corpo e una sola carne. «Chi ridirà i prodigi del Signore, farà udire tutte le sue lodi?» Sal.105,2. Qual pastore pasce le pecorelle col proprio sangue? Ma che dico pastore? Ci sono molte madri che dànno ad altre nutrici i figli che esse hanno messo al mondo. Egli non ha fatto così; ma ci nutrisce lui stesso col proprio sangue, e c'incorpora assolutamente a sé.

Tra i godimenti del corpo, fratelli carissimi, e quelli dell'anima ordinariamente c'è questa differenza: che i godimenti del corpo, quando non si hanno, accendono in noi un ardente desiderio; e mentre si gustano avidamente, fanno venir presto la nausea a chi li gusta perché saziano. I godimenti dello spirito, al contrario, provocano nausea quando non si hanno; ma quando si hanno, eccitano il desiderio: e chi li gusta tanto più li appetisce, quanto più se ne nutrisce. In quelli il desiderio piace, ma il provarli produce dispiacere; questi al contrario sembrano di poco valore allorché si desiderano, ma il loro uso piace assai di più. In quelli l'appetito genera sazietà e la sazietà il disgusto; in questi invece l'appetito fa nascere il godimento e la sazietà l'appetito.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Infatti le delizie spirituali aumentano il desiderio nell'anima, a misura che essa se ne sazia: più si gusta il loro sapore, e più si conosce che si devono desiderare con avidità; ciò spiega perché non si possono amare senza averle provate, perché non se ne conosce il sapore. E per verità, chi può amare quello che non conosce? Onde il Salmista ci ammonisce dicendo: «Gustate, e vedete come è dolce il Signore» Ps. 33,9. Come se dicesse formalmente: Voi non conoscete la sua dolcezza se non lo gustate; ma toccate col palato del vostro cuore l'alimento della vita, affinché, provando la sua dolcezza, possiate amarlo. L'uomo poi perdé queste delizie, quando peccò nel paradiso: egli ne uscì fuori, quando chiuse la bocca all'alimento dell'eterna dolcezza.

E tanto più cresce in noi questa malattia della nausea, quanto più l'anima si allontana da questo alimento pieno di dolcezza; ed ella giunge a perdere ogni appetito per queste interne delizie, perciò stesso che se ne tiene lontana ed ha perduto da molto tempo l'uso di gustarle. È il nostro disgusto dunque che ci fa deperire, è questa funesta inedia prolungata che ci spossa. E perché non vogliamo gustare di dentro la dolcezza che ci è offerta, amiamo, miseri, la fame che ci consuma di fuori.

His Word saith: “This is My Body.” This we confess, and believe, and, with spiritual eyes, do see. Christ hath not left unto us Himself in such form as that we can see, hear, touch, smell, or taste Him and yet hath He left Himself unto us in things which we can see, hear, touch, smell, and taste, and which all men may understand. Thus also is it in baptism by mean of water, which men perceive outwardly, is given unto them a gift which they can grasp only inwardly, that is, a new birth. If we had no bodies, then would these things be given us without any outward and visible signs, but since we are here made up of souls and bodies, there are given unto our souls gifts which they can grasp, in outward signs which our bodies may perceive. How many there be which say I would that I could see His comely presence, His Face, His garments, even His shoes Behold, thou dost see and touch Him, yea, thou dost feed upon Him. And wouldest thou behold His raiment Lo, He hath given unto thee not only to behold it, but to feed upon it, and handle it, and take it into thyself.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. As they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blest it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said:

At this table of the Lord let none dare to draw near with squeamishness or carelessness. Let all be fiery, all hot, all roused. To the Jews it was commanded touching the Paschal lamb, Exod. xii. 11: “And thus shall ye eat it with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand and ye shall eat it in haste it is the Lord's Passover.” But thou needest to be more watchful than they. They were just about to travel from Egypt to Palestine, and therefore they bore the guise of travellers but the journey that lieth before thee is from earth to heaven. And therefore it behoveth thee in all things to be on thy guard, for the punishment of him that eateth or drinketh unworthily is no light one 1 Cor. xi. 27. Bethink thee how thou art indignant against him which betrayed, and them that crucified the Lord and look to it well that thou also be not “Guilty of the Body and Blood of the Lord.” As for them, they slew His Most Holy Body but thou, after all that He hath done for thee, dost thrust Him into thy polluted soul. For His love, it was not enough to be made Man, to be buffeted, and to be crucified He hath also mingled Himself with us, by making us His Body, and that not by faith only, but verily and indeed.

℟. Jesus took the cup, after supper, saying: This cup is the New Testament in My Blood.

Dearly beloved brethren, between the dainties of the body and the dainties of the mind there is this difference, that the dainties of the body, when we lack them, raise up a great hunger after them, and when we devour them, straightway our fulness worketh in us niceness. But about the dainties of the mind we are nice while as yet we lack them, and when we fill ourselves with them, then are we an-hungered after them, and the more, being an-hungered, we feed thereon, the more are we an-hungered thereafter. In the bodily dainties, the hunger is keener than the fullness, but in the spiritual the fulness is keener than the hunger. In the bodily, hunger gendereth fullness, and fulness niceness in the spiritual, hunger indeed gendereth fullness, but fullness gendereth hunger.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. He that eateth My Flesh and drinketh My Blood,
* Dwelleth in Me, and I in him.

Ad Aix, in Frància, san Massimino, che fu il primo Vescovo di quella città, e dicono che sia stato discepolo del Signore.
Nello stesso giorno santa Calliopa Martire, la quale, per la fede di Cristo, essendole state tagliate le mammelle ed abbruciate le carni, voltolata sopra cocci, finalmente, decapitata, ricevette la palma del martirio.
A York, in Inghiltérra, san Gugliélmo, Vescovo e Confessore, il quale, fra gli altri miracoli operati al suo sepolcro, risuscitò tre morti, e dal Papa Onorio terzo fu ascritto nel catalogo dei Santi.
Presso Soissons, in Frància, il natale di san Medardo, Vescovo di Noyon, la cui vita e morte preziosa è illustrata da gloriosi miracoli.

On the same day, St. Calliopa, martyr, who for the faith of Christ received the palm of martyrdom. Her breasts had been cut away, her flesh burned, she was rolled on broken pottery, and was at last beheaded.
At York in England, St. William, archbishop and confessor, who, among other miracles wrought at his tomb, raised three persons from the dead. He was placed in the calendar of the saints by Pope Honorius III.
