Antonio, nato a Lisbona in Portogallo da genitori, che l'allevarono piamente, adolescente abbracciò la vita dei canonici regolari. Ma nel trasportarsi a Coimbra i corpi dei cinque beati Martiri dei frati Minori, che poco prima avevano sofferto per la fede di Cristo nel Marocco, acceso dal desiderio del martirio passò nell'ordine Francescano. Sotto l'impulso di questa fiamma si diresse subito nei paesi dei Saraceni; ma assalito da una malattia e costretto a rimpatriare su d'una nave che faceva rotta per la Spagna, la violenza dei venti lo spinse in Sicilia.

Lettura 5
Dalla Sicilia andò al capitolo generale di Assisi; e poi si ritirò nell'eremo di monte s. Paolo nell'Emilia, dove attese per molto tempo alla divina contemplazione, al digiuno e alle veglie. Quindi elevato agli ordini sacri e mandato a predicare il Vangelo, colla sapienza e la facondia del dire riportò tali successi e suscitò tanta ammirazione di sé, che il sommo Pontefice, uditolo una volta predicare, lo appellò l'arca del Testamento. Innanzi tutto egli combatté l'eresie con estrema energia, onde fu detto il perpetuo martello degli eretici.

Lettura 6
Primo del suo ordine, in grazia della sua singolare dottrina, insegnò le sacre lettere a Bologna e altrove, e diresse gli studi dei suoi confratelli. Dopo aver percorso molte Provincie, un anno prima di morire giunse a Padova, dove lasciò monumenti insigni di santità. Infine dopo aver sostenuto grandi fatiche per la gloria di Dio, glorioso di meriti e miracoli s'addormentò nel Signore il 13 Giugno dell'anno 1231. Il sommo Pontefice Gregorio IX l'iscrisse nel numero dei santi Confessori.

Il Signore mostra che si devono ritenere insipidi coloro che, agognando l'abbondanza e temendo la scarsezza dei beni del tempo, perdono i beni dell'eternità che non possono esser dati né tolti dagli uomini. Quindi: Se il sale diventasse scipito, con che cosa lo si potrà render salato? Vale a dire se voi, mediante i quali si devono condire, per così dire, i popoli, per timore delle persecuzioni nel tempo perderete il regno dei cieli, quali saranno gli uomini, mediante i quali si elimini da voi l'errore, dato che il Signore vi ha scelti per eliminare l'errore degli altri?

Quindi: Non serve a nulla il sale scipito, se non per essere gettato fuori e calpestato dagli uomini. Quindi non è calpestato dagli uomini chi soffre la persecuzione, ma chi diventa scipito perché teme la persecuzione. Difatti non si può calpestare se non chi è sotto, ma non è sotto colui che, pur subendo molti dolori in terra, col cuore è tuttavia rivolto al cielo.

E qui per mondo è opportuno intendere non il cielo e la terra, ma gli uomini che sono nel mondo o amano il mondo, perché gli apostoli sono stati inviati a illuminarli. Non può rimanere nascosta una città collocata sul monte, cioè fondata su una insigne e grande onestà, simboleggiata anche dal monte in cui il Signore sta insegnando.

Reading 4
Ferdinand de Bullones, afterwards called Anthony, was born of decent parents at Lisbon in Portugal, on the Feast of the Assumption, in the year of grace 1195. They gave him a godly training, and while he was still a young man, he joined an Institute of Canons Regular. However, when the bodies of the five holy martyred Friars Minor, who had just suffered in Morocco for Christ's sake, were brought to Coimbra, the desire to be himself a martyr took a strong hold upon him, and in 1220 he left the Canons Regular and became a Franciscan. The same yearning led him to attempt to go among the Saracens, but he fell sick on the way, and, being obliged to turn back, the ship in which he had embarked for Spain was driven by stress of weather to Sicily.

From Sicily he came to Assisi to attend the General Chapter of his Order, and thence withdrew himself to the Hermitage of Monte Paolo near Bologna, where he gave himself up for a long while to consideration of the things of God, to fastings, and to watchings. Being afterwards ordained Priest and sent to preach the Gospel, his wisdom and fluency were very marked, and drew on him such admiration of men, that the Pope, once hearing him preach, called him The Ark of the Covenant. One of his chief points was to expend all his strength in attacking heresies, whence he gained the name of the Heretics' everlasting Hammer.

He was the first of his Order who, on account of his excellent gift of teaching, publicly lectured at Bologna on the interpretation of Holy Scripture, and directed the studies of his brethren. He traveled through many provinces. The year before his death he came to Padua, where he left some remarkable records of his holy life. After having undergone much toil for the glory of God, full of good works and miracles, he fell asleep in the Lord upon the 13th day of June, in the year of salvation 1231. The Lord would have us understand how that men do lose their power of savouring others with righteousness when they are willing to place their eternal welfare in jeopardy for the sake of any témporal advantage, like as attainment of ease or luxury, or escape from suffering or toil. For that which is eternal, unlike things of this world, can neither be bestowed by men, nor by them taken away. Hence, when he asketh: If the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? he would have us understand the question to be: If ye, by whom mankind is preserved from corruption, be willing to lose the kingdom of heaven so as to escape trials or persecutions in this world, who is there to preserve you from corruption, seeing ye are they that God hath chosen to preserve all others from corruption?
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.
