Ignazio di nazione Spagnuolo e nato a Loyola, nella Cantabria, da nobile famiglia, visse prima alla corte del re cattolico, e poi s'arruolò nella milizia. Costretto a letto per una grave ferita riportata nell'assedio di Pamplona, la lettura fortuita di pii libri l'infiammò d'un vivo desiderio di seguire le tracce di Cristo e dei Santi. Recatosi a Monserrato, vi sospese le armi davanti all'altare della beata Vergine, e vegliando la notte, iniziò il tirocinio della santa milizia. Quindi vestito di sacco com'era, avendo dato prima a un mendicante i suoi ricchi abiti, si ritirò a Manresa; dove dimorò un anno, mendicando il pane e l'acqua di cui si nutriva, digiunando tutti i giorni, eccetto le Domeniche, domando la carne con una rude catena e col cilizio, dormendo per terra e flagellandosi fino a sangue, con una disciplina di ferro, ma confortato da Dio con sì meravigliosi lumi, che era solito dire: Quand'anche non esistessero le sacre Scritture, io non sarei meno pronto a morire per la fede per le sole cose che il Signore m'ha rivelato a Manresa. Fu allora che quest'uomo, affatto illetterato, compose quel mirabile libro degli esercizi che si raccomanda per l'approvazione della Sede apostolica e per il bene che tutti ne ricavano.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

Tuttavia per rendersi più atto a guadagnare le anime, risolvé d'assicurarsi il soccorso delle lettere, e cominciò a studiare la grammatica coi fanciulli. Intanto non trascurando per nulla quanto riguarda l'altrui salvezza, stupisce il vedere quante fatiche ed affronti ebbe a sostenere dappertutto, soffrendo le più dure prove, la prigione e le battiture fin quasi a morirne; ciò però non gli impediva di bramare ancora molto di più per la gloria del Signore. Essendosi uniti a lui nove compagni di diverse nazioni, appartenenti all'università di Parigi, tutti maestri nelle arti e addottorati in teologia, vi gettò a Montmartre i primi fondamenti del suo ordine, che poi stabilì a Roma, aggiungendo ai tre ordinari un quarto voto riguardante le Missioni, e mettendolo sotto la stretta dipendenza della Sede apostolica; e Paolo III prima l'ammise e confermò, e altri Pontefici e il concilio di Trento l'approvarono. Egli poi inviato san Francesco Saverio a predicare il Vangelo nelle Indie e disseminati altri nelle diverse parti del mondo a propagarvi la religione, dichiarò guerra al paganesimo e alla eresia; e con tal successo, che, per sentimento universale, confermato anche da testimonianza pontificia, Dio volle opposto Ignazio e la sua società a Lutero e agli eretici d'allora, come già altri santi uomini in altri tempi.

Ma innanzi tutto e soprattutto ebbe a cuore il rinnovamento della pietà fra i Cattolici. Lo splendore dei templi, l'insegnamento del catechismo, la frequenza delle sacre riunioni e dei sacramenti devono molto alla sua azione. Egli aprì dappertutto collegi per formare la gioventù nelle lettere e nella pietà; a Roma fondò il collegio Germanico, ricoveri per le donne perdute e le giovani pericolanti, case per i catecumeni e gli orfani di ambo i sessi, e altre opere di pietà attestano il suo zelo infaticabile per guadagnare le anime a Dio; più d'una volta si udì dire, che se gli fosse dato di scegliere, avrebbe preferito vivere incerto della beatitudine, e intanto lavorare per Iddio e la salvezza del prossimo, piuttosto che morire subito colla sicurezza della gloria del cielo. Esercitò un impero straordinario sui demoni. S. Filippo Neri ed altri videro il suo volto tutto raggiante di luce celeste. Infine, a sessantacinque anni di età, se ne andò all'amplesso del suo Signore, la cui maggior gloria aveva avuto sempre in bocca, ed aveva cercato in tutto. Illustre nella Chiesa per i suoi grandi meriti e miracoli, Gregorio XV lo iscrisse nell'albo dei Santi.

Omelia di s. Gregorio papa
Omelia 17ma sui Vangeli.
Il Signore e Salvatore nostro, fratelli carissimi, ci avvisa ora con parole ed ora con opere. Infatti le sue opere sono precetti; e, quando fa qualche cosa, anche senza dir nulla, ci mostra quello che dobbiamo fare noi. Ecco, dunque, egli manda i discepoli a predicare a due a due, perché sono due i precetti della carità, cioè l'amor di Dio e l'amor del prossimo, e bisogna essere almeno in due per poter praticare la carità. Infatti propriamente parlando, non si esercita la carità verso se stessi; ma l'amore, perché possa essere carità, deve avere per oggetto un altro.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:
* egli interceda per i peccati di tutti gli uomini.
℣. Ecco un uomo irreprensibile, vero cultore di Dio: si astenne da ogni malvagità e perseverò nella propria innocenza.
℟. Egli interceda per i peccati di tutti gli uomini.

℣. Dègnati, padre, di benedirmi.
Benedizione. Colui del quale celebriamo la festa, interceda per noi presso il Signore.

Ecco dunque che il Signore manda i discepoli a predicare a due a due, insinuandoci così tacitamente come, chi non ha carità verso gli altri, in nessun modo deve assumersi l'ufficio della predicazione. E con ragione si dice che li mandò davanti a sé in ogni città e luogo dove egli stava per andare. Infatti il Signore segue i suoi predicatori; la predicazione infatti precede, e allora il Signore viene ad abitare nell'anima nostra, quando è preceduto dalle parole di coloro che ci esortano; ed è così che la verità è ricevuta dallo spirito.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Siano cinti i vostri fianchi ed accese nelle vostre mani le lucerne, e
* siate come coloro che aspettano il loro padrone quando torni da nozze.
℣. Siate preparati, perché non sapete quando il Signore vostro verrà.

Ed ecco perché Isaia dice agli stessi predicatori: «Preparate la via del Signore, raddrizzate i sentieri del Dio nostro». Ed il Salmista dice ai figli di Dio: «Preparate la via a colui che ascende da occidente». Infatti il Signore ascese da occidente; perché quanto più il Signore si è abbassato nella sua passione, tanto più ha manifestato la sua gloria nella risurrezione. Ascese veramente da occidente, perché, risorgendo, calpestò la morte che aveva subita. Noi dunque prepariamo la strada a colui che salì da occidente, quando predichiamo alle vostre anime la sua gloria, affinché egli stesso poi venendo, le illumini con la sua presenza e con il suo amore.

Reading 4
Ignatius was a Spaniard by nation, and was born of the noble Biscayan family of Loyola, in the year of our Lord 1491. He followed first the Court and then the army of the Most Catholic King. At the siege of Pampeluna in the year 1521 he received a severe wound which laid him up with a long and dangerous illness. During this time he chanced to read some godly books, and conceived from them a burning desire to follow in the footsteps of Christ and His saints. He betook himself to Monserrat, and there entered himself for the heavenly warfare, by hanging up his weapons, and watching them for a night before the Altar of the Blessed Virgin. Thence he withdrew to Manresa, clad in sackcloth, for he had before given his costly raiment to a beggar. At Manresa he lived upon bread and water, begging the bread, and fasting every day except the Lord's Day. He mastered his flesh by the use of a sharp chain and hair-cloth, slept upon the ground, and lashed himself to bloodshedding with iron scourges. Thus he dwelt for a year, feasted by God with such clear lights, that he was used afterwards to say that even if the Holy Bible had not existed, he would have been ready to die for the faith only on the evidence of those things which the Lord had shown unto him at Manresa. It was at this time that, albeit a man of little education, he put together that wonderful book entitled Spiritual Exercises, whose worth hath been attested by the judgment of the Apostolic See, and by universal usefulness.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. The Lord made him honourable, and defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait for him;

To make himself of greater use for the profit of souls, he determined to improve himself by education, beginning by going through the rudiments among little boys. He left nothing untried that could help towards the salvation of others, and it was marvellous what pain and mockery he cheerfully accepted on all hands, suffering ill-usage also, imprisonment and stripes almost unto death; but he was willing to suffer them all much more for the greater glory of his Master. At Paris he took to him seven comrades from the members of that University, men of different nations, but who had all taken the Degree of Master of Arts and in Divinity. With these seven he laid the first foundations of the Society of Jesus in the crypt at Montmartre, upon the 15th day of August, in the year of Christ 1534. When he afterwards organised the same Society at Rome he bound it by the closest bonds to the Apostolic See, adding to the three accustomed vows of Poverty, Chastity, and Obedience, a fourth, concerning Missions. Paul III. was the first Pope to receive and confirm the Institute, but it has since been approved by other Popes and by the Council of Trent. Ignatius, to spread the Faith, sent holy Francis Xavier to preach the Gospel in the Indies, and others in other parts of the world, and the war, which he thus proclaimed against paganism and heresy, was waged with such success, that it was the general belief, confirmed by the utterance of the Pope, that even as God had in other times raised up holy men specially to meet the needs of their day, so He had raised up against Luther and the heretics of that age, Ignatius and the Society which he had founded.

Reading 6
But the first care of Ignatius was to set forward godliness among Catholics. He was a great promoter of seemliness in the Churches, instruction in the Catechism, and often hearing Sermons and using the Sacraments. He opened schools everywhere to train up boys in godliness and good learning. At Rome he founded the German College, a home for fallen and another for imperilled girls, an orphanage for boys and another for girls, houses for converts under instruction, and other godly institutions. He never wearied in his work of gaining souls for God, and was sometimes heard to say that if he had the choice he would rather live without knowing whether he was to be among the blessed, and meanwhile work for God and the salvation of his neighbours, than know he was going to glory and die forthwith. He exercised an extraordinary power over devils. Holy Philip Neri and others saw heavenly light shining from his face. At last, (on the 31st day of July,) in the year of our Redemption 1556 and of his own age the sixty fifth, he passed away to the embrace of that Lord Whose greater glory had been the constant theme of his words and aim of all his works. He is very illustrious in the Church on account of his great deeds and miracles, and Gregory XV. enrolled him in the Kalendar of the Saints.

Dearly beloved brethren, our Lord and Saviour doth sometimes admonish us by words, and sometimes by works. Yea, His very works do themselves teach us for that which He doth silently His example still moveth us to copy. Behold how He sendeth forth His disciples to preach by two and two since there are two commandments to love, that is, a commandment to love God, and a commandment to love our neighbour and where there are not two, the one, being alone, hath not whereon to do the Lord's commandment. And no man can properly be said to love himself: for love tendeth outward toward our neighbour, if it be the love whereto the Gospel doth oblige us.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.
* May he pray for all people, that their sins may be forgiven unto them.

A Roma, sull'Esquilino, la Dedicazione della chiesa di san Piétro Apostolo in Vincoli.
In Antiochia la passione dei sette santi Fratelli Maccabèi Martiri, i quali, colla loro madre, patirono sotto il Re Antioco Epifane.
Le loro reliquie, trasportate a Roma, furono riposte nella medesima chiesa di san Piétro in Vincoli.
A Vercélli il natale di sant'Eusébio, Vescovo e Martire, il quale, per la confessione della fede cattolica, relegato dal Principe Costanzo a Scitópoli, in Palestina, quindi nella Cappadócia, ritornato poi alla sua chiesa, soffrì il martirio per la persecuzione degli Ariani. La sua memoria si fa solennemente anche il quindici Dicembre, giorno nel quale fu ordinato Vescovo, e la sua festa si celebra il sedici Dicembre.
Così pure a Nocéra dei Pagani, nella Campania, il natale di sant'Alfonso Maria de' Liguóri, Fondatore della Congregazione detta del santissimo Redentore, Vescovo di sant'Agata de' Goti e Confessore, insigne per lo zelo delle anime, per gli scritti, per la predicazione e per l'esempio. Dal Sommo Pontefice Gregorio decimosesto fu ascritto nel catalogo dei Santi, da Pio nono fu dichiarato Dottore della Chiesa universale e Pio dodicesimo lo costituì celeste Patrono di tutti i Confessori e Moralisti. La sua festa si celebra nel giorno seguente.
