La vergine Chiara, nobile, nata ad Assisi nell'Umbria, ad esempio di san Francesco, suo concittadino, convertì e distribuì tutti i suoi beni in elemosine e mezzi d'assistenza per i poveri. Fuggendo il tumulto del suolo, si ritirò nella chiesa della Porziuncola, dove san Francesco le tagliò i capelli, ed ella resistete fortemente ai parenti che tentavano di ricondurla nel mondo. Condotta poi dallo stesso nella chiesa di san Damiano, il Signore le mandò parecchie compagne; e così ella istituì una comunità di religiose di cui accettò il governo solo per cedere alle reiterate istanze di san Francesco. Ella governò mirabilmente il suo monastero per quarantadue anni con sollecitudine, prudenza, timor di Dio ed esatta osservanza delle regole; che la sua vita era per le altre ammaestramento ed esempio, da cui apprendevano a regolare la loro vita.

Lettura 5
Al fine di fortificare lo spirito soggiogando la carne, aveva per letto la nuda terra e talvolta dei sarmenti, e per cuscino un duro pezzo di legno. Aveva una sola tonaca con un mantello di stoffa rozza e grossolana, e un aspro cilizio cingeva la sua carne. Era tale la sua astinenza, che tre giorni della settimana per molto tempo non prese assolutamente niente per sostenere il suo corpo; e gli altri giorni si limitava a tale piccola quantità di cibo, che le altre si meravigliavano come potesse vivere. Prima di ammalarsi, faceva due quaresime all'anno non prendendo che pane ed acqua. Inoltre dedita continuamente alle veglie e all'orazione, passava in esse la maggior parte del giorno e della notte. Infermità di lunga durata non permettendole di levarsi da sola per i lavori materiali, si levava aiutata dalle sorelle; quindi, appoggiato il dorso a dei sostegni, lavorava colle proprie mani per non rimaner oziosa neppure nelle sue infermità. Amante sopratutto della povertà, non se ne allontanò per nessuna necessità; è ricusò costantissimamente delle possessioni offertele da Gregorio IX per il sostegno delle suore.

Lettura 6
La sua grande santità fu illustrata da molti e vari miracoli. Restituì l'uso della parola ad una suora dèi suo monastero; a un'altra restituì l'udito; liberò un'altra dalla febbre, un'altra dalla idropisia, un'altra da una fistola e altre da altre malattie. Guarì di pazzia un frate dell'ordine dei Minori. Essendo venuto a mancare totalmente l'olio nel monastero, Chiara preso un'orciuolo, lo lavò e si trovò ripieno d'olio per un miracolo della divina bontà. Moltiplicò mezzo pane così, che bastò a cinquanta suore. Allorché i Saraceni cercavano, nell'assedio d'Assisi, d'invadere il monastero di Chiara, ella, benché malata, si fece portare alla porta della casa tenendo la scatola ove si custodiva il santissimo sacramento dell'Eucaristia, facendo questa preghiera: «Non abbandonare, o Signore, alle belve le anime che ti lodano, e proteggi le tue ancelle, che hai riscattato col tuo sangue prezioso» Sal 73,19. Mentre così pregava. si udì questa voce: «Io vi proteggerò sempre». Difatti i Saraceni parte si diedero alla fuga, parte, già saliti sulle mura, divenuti ciechi, caddero per di dietro. Infine, questa Vergine, negli ultimi estremi visitata da un coro di sante Vergini biancovestite (fra le quali si distingueva una più risplendente di tutte le altre), ricevuta la santa Eucaristia e favorita da Innocenzo IV dell'indulgenza plenaria, il 12 Agosto rese l'anima a Dio. Glorificata poi dopo morte da moltissimi miracoli, Alessandro IV l'annoverò fra le sante Vergini.

Omelia 12 sui Vangeli.
Spesso vi raccomando, fratelli carissimi, di fuggire le opere cattive e di evitare la corruzione di questo mondo, ma quest'oggi la lettura del santo Vangelo mi costringe a dirvi di stare molto attenti a non perdere il merito delle vostre buone opere, a non cercare, nel bene che fate, il favore o la stima degli uomini, ad impedire
che si insinui in voi il desiderio della lode e ad agire in modo che, quanto appare di fuori, non sia dentro vuoto di ricompensa. Il Redentore infatti ci parla di dieci vergini, e le dice tutte vergini; eppure non tutte hanno meritato di essere ammesse al soggiorno della beatitudine, perché alcune di esse, mentre cercavano una gloria esteriore della loro verginità, non si curarono di mettere dell'olio nelle loro lampade.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questa è una vergine saggia, che il Signore trovò vigilante: lei, con le lampade, prese con sé anche l'olio.

Ma prima dobbiamo chiederci che cosa sia il regno dei cieli, o perché lo si paragoni a dieci vergini, ed anche quali vengano dette vergini prudenti e quali vergini stolte. Mentre infatti è certo che nessun reprobo entrerà nel regno dei cieli, perché questo viene paragonato anche a delle vergini stolte? Dobbiamo sapere che spesso nel linguaggio sacro la Chiesa del tempo presente viene chiamata regno dei cieli. Onde altrove il Signore dice: «Il Figlio dell'uomo manderà i suoi angeli, e toglieranno dal suo regno tutti gli scandali». Certamente in quel regno di beatitudine, dove c'è la suprema pace, non si potranno trovare scandali da togliere.

Ciascuno vive in un corpo che ha cinque sensi; il numero cinque poi, raddoppiato, dà dieci. E, poiché la moltitudine dei fedeli comprende ambedue i sessi, la santa Chiesa si dice simile a dieci vergini. E poiché in essa i cattivi si trovano mescolati coi buoni e i reprobi con gli eletti, giustamente viene paragonata a delle vergini prudenti ed anche a delle vergini stolte. Infatti ci sono molti che vivono nella continenza, che si guardano dagli appetiti esteriori, e dalla speranza sono portati ai beni interiori, che mortificano la propria carne, e anelano alla patria celeste con tutta la forza del loro desiderio, agognano i premi eterni, e non vogliono ricevere lodi umane per le loro fatiche. Questi certamente non ripongono la loro gloria nelle parole degli uomini, ma la nascondono nella loro coscienza. E ci sono poi molti che affliggono il loro corpo con l'astinenza, ma per questa stessa loro astinenza cercano gli applausi degli uomini.

Reading 4
The noble maiden Clara was born at Assisi in Umbria, in the year 1193. In imitation of her holy fellow-citizen Francis, she distributed all her goods among the poor and needy. She fled from the din of the world, and on the 18th day of March, 1212, betook herself to the Church (of St. Mary of the Angels) in the fields, where blessed Francis cut her hair. She stoutly resisted the efforts of her family to make her come back, and after a while Francis took her to the Church of St. Damian, where the Lord gathered around her several companions. Thus she founded an holy Sisterhood, which, at the earnest entreaty of holy Francis, she governed. For two-and-forty years she directed her monastery with wonderful care and wisdom in the fear of the Lord and the full keeping of the Rule. Her own life was an instruction and teaching for the rest, whence others learnt to order their own.

What she might wax stronger in spirit by keeping the body down, she made her bed on the bare ground, sometimes with little twigs, and with hard wood for a pillow. Her dress was a gown and cloak of mean and rough cloth, and she sometimes wore hair-cloth next the skin. She bridled herself with such abstinence, that for a long time she took no bodily nourishment whatever upon three days in the week. Upon the remaining days she ate so little that the others wondered how she lived. As long as her health allowed it, she kept two Lents every year, during which she fasted upon bread and water. Moreover, she was instant in watching and prayer, wherein she chiefly spent both her days and nights. She suffered from constant illnesses, and when she could not herself rise to bodily work, she sat up with the help of the sisters, and with her back propped, worked with her hands, that she might not be idle even in the midst of her weaknesses. She was an eminent lover of poverty, from which no need ever made her swerve, and she persistently refused the possessions which were offered to the sisters by Gregory IX. for their support.

The power of her holy life shone forth in many and diverse miracles. She restored the use of speech to one of the sisters in her convent for another she opened a deaf ear she healed one sick with fever, one swollen with dropsy, one troubled with an hollow oozing ulcer, and others afflicted with diverse ailments. She cured a brother of the Order of Friars Minors of raging madness. Once when all the oil in the house was spent, she took the vessel and washed it, and it was found filled with oil by the goodness of God. She multiplied half a loaf till it was enough to satisfy fifty sisters. When the Saracens (attached to the army of Frederick II.) attacked Assisi, in the year 1239, and were fain to break into Clare's monastery, she being sick, caused herself to be carried to the door, and likewise the vessel in which was held the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist, and there she prayed, saying O Lord, deliver not unto beasts the souls of them that praise thee, but preserve thine handmaids whom Thou hast redeemed with thy Precious Blood. Whereupon a voice was heard which said I will always preserve you. Some of the Saracens took to flight, and others who had mounted the wall became blind, and fell down headlong. When Clare herself was at the point of death she beheld a white multitude of blessed Virgins, with one among them nobler and brighter than the rest. Having received the Holy Eucharist, and a Plenary Indulgence from Innocent IV., she resigned her soul to God upon the
12th day of August 1253. After her death she became illustrious for very many miracles, and Alexander IV. enrolled her name among those of the Holy Virgins.

Dearly beloved brethren oftentimes do I warn you to fly corrupt conversation, and to keep yourselves unspotted from the world. But the portion which is this day read from the Holy Gospel doth oblige me to say that even to these good things which ye do, ye must needs take all careful heed. Look ye well to it, that, when ye work righteousness, ye do it not as seeking the praise and admiration of men, for if the lust of praise do once creep in, that which seemeth so fair without, loseth its reward within. Behold how the Redeemer speaketh of these ten virgins. He calleth them all virgins, yet entered not all of them into the door of blessedness, for there were some of them who sought outwardly the honour of virginity, but would take no oil within their vessels with their lamps.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is one of those wise virgins, whom the Lord found watching, for when she took her lamp, she took oil with her.

First of all, it is for us to ask What is the kingdom of Heaven? In that kingdom of Blessedness, wherein peace shall have her perfect reign, there shall be nothing found that offendeth for the angels to gather out.

There are many who have self-control, which do keep themselves from lusting after things outward, whose hope beareth them to things inward, who chastise the flesh, who long with intense home-sickness for their Fatherland which is in heaven, who seek an eternal reward, and who will not to receive for their labours the praise of men. These are they who reckon their glory, not in the mouths of men, but in the testimony of their own conscience. A Roma il beato Ippólito Martire, il quale per la gloria della confessione, sotto l'Imperatore Valeriàno, dopo altri tormenti, legato per i piedi al collo di indomiti cavalli, fu crudelmente trascinato per luoghi aspri e spinosi, e con il corpo tutto lacerato rese lo spirito. Patirono ancora nello stesso giorno la beata Concórdia, sua nutrice, la quale, tormentata in sua presenza con flagelli piombati, passò al Signore; ed altri diciannove della sua famiglia, i quali fuori della porta Tiburtina furono decapitati, e, insieme con lui, sepolti al campo Veràno, Presso Imola il natale di san Cassiàno Martire. Non avendo voluto adorare gl'idoli, chiamati dal persecutore i fanciulli, ai quali come maestro era diventato odioso, fu dato loro il permesso di ucciderlo; la loro mano quanto più era debole, tanto più grave gli rendeva la pena del martirio, ritardandone la morte.

Upon the same day there suffered his nurse, the blessed Concordia, who was beaten to death with scourges loaded with lead, and passed away.
At Imola, [in the fourth century,] the holy martyr Cassian. When he refused to worship idols the persecutors called for the boys to whom he had become hateful while teaching them, and gave them permission to kill him, and the weaker their hands were the greater were his sufferings through the delay of death.

Ascoltaci, o Dio nostro Salvatore, e fa' che noi, come ci rallegriamo della festa di S. tua beata Vergine Chiara, così impariamo da lei gli affetti di una pia devozione.
Per il nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, tuo Figlio, che è Dio, e vive e regna con te, in unità con lo Spirito Santo, per tutti i secoli dei secoli.
