Giuseppe Calasanzio della Madre di Dio, nato da nobile famiglia a Prealta nell'Aragona, fin dai più teneri anni diede indizi della sua carità verso i fanciulli e del suo zelo per istruirli. Difatti bambino ancora, li riuniva intorno a sé, ed insegnava loro i misteri della fede e le sante preghiere. Istruitosi egregiamente nelle letture profane e sacre, mentre attendeva agli studi teologici a Valenza, ebbe a difendersi fortemente dalle insidie d'una donna nobile e potente, e con insigne vittoria conservò intatta la verginità, che aveva consacrata a Dio. Fattosi sacerdote per un voto, e chiamato da più vescovi della Nuova Castiglia, Aragona e Catalogna a dividere le loro fatiche, sorpassò le speranze di tutti, che dovunque si emendavano i costumi, veniva ristabilita la disciplina ecclesiastica, estinte mirabilmente le inimicizie e fazioni cruente. Ma avvertito ripetutamente da celeste visione e dalla voce di Dio, partì per Roma.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano
* e gli procurò eterna gloria.

Lettura 5
In Roma menò vita austerissima, affliggendo il suo corpo con veglie e digiuni, passando i giorni e le notti nella preghiera e nella contemplazione delle cose celesti, costumando di visitare quasi ogni notte le sette Basiliche della Città; e conservò quest'abitudine per molti anni. Ascrittosi a pie confraternite, stupisce con quanto zelo soccorreva i poveri, specialmente i malati e carcerati, facendo loro elemosine e prestando ogni dovere di pietà. In una peste che devastava Roma unitosi a san Camillo, si abbandonò così generosamente ai trasporti della carità, che, oltre a dare ai poveri malati larghi sussidi, giunse fino a trasportare colle sue spalle al luogo della sepoltura i cadaveri dei deceduti. Ma appreso da rivelazione divina essere egli destinato a istruire e formare nella pietà i giovanetti, sopratutto i poveri, fondò l'ordine dei Chierici regolari poveri delle Scuole pie della Madre di Dio, i quali avessero per regola di attendere in modo speciale all'istruzione dei fanciulli. Ed egli vivamente incoraggiato da Clemente VIII, Paolo V e altri sommi Pontefici, in breve tempo propagò mirabilmente quest'ordine in moltissime Provincie e regni d'Europa. Ma in ciò sopportò con animo invitto tante fatiche e tante prove, che con voce unanime era detto miracolo di fortezza e un altro esempio del santo Giobbe.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,

Benché generale del suo ordine, e lavorasse con tutte le forze alla salvezza delle anime, tuttavia mai cessò d'istruire i fanciulli specialmente più poveri, e soleva scoparne le scuole, e accompagnarli a casa. Perseverò cinquantadue anni, anche infermo, in queste ammirabili pratiche di pazienza ed umiltà; onde meritò che Dio lo illustrasse con frequenti miracoli davanti ai discepoli, e che la beatissima Vergine col bambino Gesù gli apparisse benedicente, mentr'essi pregavano. Ricusate nel frattempo le più alte dignità, celebre per il dono di profezia, penetrazione dei cuori, conoscenza di cose lontane e per miracoli, favorito da frequenti apparizioni della Vergine Madre di Dio, che egli onorò con un culto tutto particolare fin dall'infanzia e raccomandò sommamente ai suoi, e di altri Santi, dopo aver predetto il giorno della sua morte e il ristabilimento e incremento del suo ordine allora quasi distrutto, s'addormentò nel Signore a Roma, in età di novantadue anni, il 25 Agosto dell'anno 1648. Il suo cuore e la sua lingua dopo un secolo furono ritrovati incorrotti. Egli poi illustrato anche dopo morte da Dio con molti miracoli, prima fu onorato da Benedetto XIV del culto dei Beati, e poi da Clemente X fu annoverato solennemente fra i Santi.

«Guardatevi dal disprezzare alcuno di questi piccini, perché i loro Angeli vedono sempre il volto del Padre mio» Mt 18,10, e perché io sono venuto per loro, e questa è la volontà del Padre mio. Con ciò egli ci avverte d'essere più diligenti nel custodire e preservare i fanciulli. Vedi che grandi ripari egli ha innalzato a difesa dei piccini, e quanto studio e cura abbia perché non si perdano; sia stabilendo pene severissime per quelli che li disprezzano, sia promettendo la massima ricompensa a quelli che ne hanno cura, e questo lo conferma col suo e coll'esempio del Padre.

Ma, se ci sarà bisogno ancora dell'opera. nostra, per quanto piccolo e spregevole sia colui che si deve servire, per quanto la cosa ci possa sembrare ardua e penosa, tutto questo, ci paia tollerabile e facile per la salvezza del fratello. Perché Dio ci ha mostrato essere un'anima degna di tanta sollecitudine e cura che per essa «non risparmiò neppure il suo Figlio» Rom 8,32.

Joseph Calasanz, called of the Mother of God, was born of a noble family at Petralta in Aragon, on the 15th day of September, in the year of Christ 1556. From his tender years he began to show that fondness for children, and that gift of instructing them for which he was afterwards distinguished. He called them around him when he was still but a child himself, and taught them the mysteries of the faith and godly prayers. He was deeply learned in profane and sacred letters, and it was while he was studying theology at Valencia that he bravely overcame the wiles of a noble and powerful lady and, by a brilliant victory, kept untarnished that virginity which he had vowed to God. He became a Priest in consequence of a vow, and was summoned by many Bishops in the kingdoms of New Castile, Aragon, and Catalonia to help them in their work, wherein he surpassed the hopes of all, correcting depraved manners, restoring the discipline of the Church, and marvellously putting an end to hatreds and bloody feuds. But in obedience to a vision from heaven and many warnings from the voice of God, he left Spain and went to Rome.

In Rome he afflicted his body with extraordinary hardness of living, with watching, and with fasting, and so passed his days and nights in prayer, and in the contemplation of heavenly things. He was used to visit the Seven Churches almost every night, a custom which he kept for many years. Having joined several godly Brotherhoods, it was strange how eagerly he relieved the poor by alms and every sort of kindness, choosing especially the sick and the imprisoned. When the city was ravaged by a pestilence, such was the charitable zeal with which he joined in the labours of St. Camillus de' Lelli, that besides the great help which he brought to the sick poor, he would even carry the bodies of the dead on his own shoulders to burial. Having understood from God that his call was to bring up children in godliness and good learning, he founded the Order of the Poor Regular Clerks of the Pious Schools of the Mother of God, who profess as the special object of their Institute a singular care for the teaching of the poor. This Institute received the warm approval of Clement VIII., Paul V., and other Popes, and in a short time obtained a marvellous extension through many provinces and kingdoms of Europe. In this work Joseph Casalanz underwent so many toils, and patiently bore so many griefs, that he was proclaimed by all men a wonder of endurance and a very image of holy Job.

Then when he was at the head of his whole Order, and toiling with all his might for the salvation of souls, he never ceased to teach children, especially the poor, to sweep out the school-rooms, and to accompany the scholars home. Thus in spite of broken health he worked on for two and fifty years, with the greatest longsuffering and lowliness. He won that God should glorify him by many miracles worked in the presence of his disciples, and that the Most Blessed Virgin should appear to him, with the Child Jesus in her arms, blessing them as they prayed. He refused wealthy preferments when they were offered to him. He was eminent for the gift of prophecy, for the power of reading the secrets of the heart, of knowing distant events, and of miracles. The Virgin Mother of God, to whom from his childhood he had had an especial love, and other heavenly ones, honoured him by often allowing him to see them. He foretold the day of his own death, and the restoration and growth of his Order, which seemed at that time to be almost entirely destroyed. He fell asleep in the Lord at Rome, upon the 25 th day of August, in the year of salvation 1648, and of his own age the 92 nd. An hundred years after his death his heart and tongue were found whole and incorrupt. God glorified him by many miracles even after his death, and he was first crowned by Benedict XIV. with the honours paid to the Blessed, and then solemnly enrolled by Clement XIII. among the Saints.

Thou seest how mighty are the walls which He raiseth to protect little children, and how great thought and care He hath lest they should be lost, threatening on the one hand the uttermost punishment against whosoever shall offend one of these little ones which believe in Him, 6 and promising on the other hand, the highest reward to whosoever shall receive one such little child in His Name, 5 and this His teaching He giveth both in His Own, and in His Father's Name.

Anno del Signore 2026, 28 Agosto, Luna 15

A Ippóna, in Africa, il natale di sant'Agostino Vescovo, Confessore e Dottore esimio della Chiesa, il quale, convertito alla fede cattolica e battezzato per opera del beato Vescovo Ambrogio, la difese propugnatore acerrimo contro i Manichèi ed altri eretici, e dopo aver sostenuto molte altre fatiche per la Chiesa di Dio, passò al cielo per il premio. Le sue reliquie, prima trasportate dalla sua città in Sardègna per paura dei barbari, e poi da Liutpràndo, Re dei Longobardi, trasferite a Pavia, ivi furono onorevolmente riposte.

Martyrology {anticipated}
August 28th 2026, the 15th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Hippo, in Africa, [in the year 430,] the holy Augustine, Bishop of that city, the eminent Doctor of the Church. He was converted to the Catholic faith, and baptized by blessed Bishop Ambrose. He was the stalwart defender of the faith against the Manicheans and other heretics, and, after manifold toil for the Church of God, he passed away to be rewarded in heaven. His body was first brought from his own city to Sardinia, on account of the barbarians, and afterwards by Luitprand, King of the Lombards, -to Pavia, where it is honourably buried.
At Rome, [in the year 116 or 132,] the holy martyr Hermes, a man of illustrious worldly station, who, as is written in the acts of the blessed Pope Alexander, was first committed to prison, and then slain with the sword along with many others, under the judge Aurelian.
At Brioude, in Auvergne, the holy martyr Julian he was a comrade of the blessed Tribune Ferreolus, and secretly served Christ as a soldier but in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian he was tried by the other soldiers, who horribly murdered him by cutting his throat.
