Allorché l'eresia degli Albigesi s'estendeva empiamente nella provincia di Tolosa mettendovi di giorno in giorno radici sempre più profonde, san Domenico, che aveva fondato allora l'ordine dei Predicatori, si applicò interamente a sradicarla. E per riuscirvi più sicuramente, implorò con assidue preghiere il soccorso della beata Vergine, la cui dignità quegli eretici attaccavano impudentemente, ed a cui è dato di distruggere tutte l'eresie nell'intero universo. Ricevuto da lei l'avviso (secondo che vuole la tradizione) di predicare ai popoli il Rosario come aiuto singolarmente efficace contro l'eresie e i vizi, stupisce vedere con qual fervore e con qual successo egli eseguì l'ufficio affidatogli. Ora il Rosario è una formula particolare di preghiera nella quale si distinguono quindici decade di salutazioni angeliche, separate dall'orazione Domenicale, e in ciascuna delle quali ricordiamo, meditandoli piamente, altrettanti misteri della nostra redenzione. Da quel tempo dunque questa maniera di pregare incominciò, grazie a san Domenico, a farsi conoscere e a spandersi. E, ch'egli ne sia l'istitutore e l'autore, lo si trova affermato non di rado nelle lettere apostoliche dei sommi Pontefici.

Da questa istituzione si salutare promanarono nel popolo cristiano innumerevoli benefici. Fra i quali si cita con ragione la vittoria, che il santissimo Pontefice Pio V e i principi cristiani infiammati da lui riportarono presso le isole Cursolari sul potentissimo despota dei Turchi. Infatti, essendo stata riportata questa vittoria il giorno medesimo in cui i confratelli del santissimo Rosario indirizzavano a Maria in tutto il mondo le consuete suppliche e le preghiere stabilite secondo l'uso, non senza ragione essa si attribuì a queste preghiere. E ciò l'attestò anche Gregorio XIII, ordinando che a ricordo di beneficio tanto singolare, in tutto il mondo si rendessero perenni azioni di grazie alla beata Vergine sotto il titolo del Rosario, in tutte le chiese che avessero un altare del Rosario, e concedendo in perpetuo in tal giorno un Ufficio di rito doppio maggiore; e altri Pontefici hanno accordato indulgenze pressoché innumerevoli a quelli che recitano il Rosario e alla confraternita di questo nome.

Clemente XI poi, stimando che anche l'insigne vittoria riportata l'anno 1716 nel regno d'Ungheria da Carlo VI, imperatore dei Romani, su l'immenso esercito dei Turchi, accadde lo stesso giorno in cui si celebrava la festa della Dedicazione di santa Maria della Neve, e quasi nel medesimo tempo che a Roma i confratelli del santissimo Rosario facendo preghiere pubbliche e solenni con immenso concorso di popolo e grande pietà indirizzavano a Dio ferventi suppliche per l'abbattimento dei Turchi e imploravano umilmente l'aiuto potente della Vergine Madre di Dio a favore dei Cristiani; perciò credé dover attribuire questa vittoria al patrocinio della stessa Vergine, come pure la liberazione, avvenuta poco dopo, dell'isola di Corcira dall'assedio parimente dei Turchi. Quindi perché restasse sempre perpetuo e grato ricordo di si insigne beneficio, estese a tutta la Chiesa la festa del santissimo Rosario da celebrarsi collo stesso rito. Benedetto XIII fece inserire tutto ciò nel Breviario Romano. Leone XIII poi, in tempi turbolentissimi per la Chiesa, e nell'orribile tempesta di mali che da lungo tempo ci opprimono, ha sovente e vivamente eccitato con reiterate lettere apostoliche tutti i fedeli del mondo a recitare spesso il Rosario di Maria, soprattutto nel mese d'Ottobre, ne ha innalzato di più la festa a rito superiore, ha aggiunto alle litanie Lauretane l'invocazione, Regina del sacratissimo Rosario, e concesso a tutta la Chiesa un Ufficio proprio per la stessa solennità. Veneriamo dunque sempre la santissima Madre di Dio con questa devozione che le è gratissima; affinché, invocata tante volte dai fedeli di Cristo colla preghiera del Rosario, dopo averci dato d'abbattere e annientare i nemici terreni, ci conceda altresì di trionfare di quelli infernali.

Sermone su S. Maria
Per far apprezzare la sua grazia e confondere la saggezza umana, Dio si degnò di prendere la natura umana da una donna, però da una vergine, affin di rendere somiglianza per somiglianza, di guarire il contrario col contrario, d'estirpare la spina velenosa, e cancellare, con sovrano potere, la cedola del peccato. Eva è stata la spina; Maria è la rosa. Eva è stata la spina, ferendo; Maria è la rosa, guadagnando l'affetto di tutti. Eva la spina, inoculando a tutti la morte; Maria la rosa, che ci ha tutti guariti. Maria fu una rosa bianca per la verginità, e rossa per la carità; bianca per la castità del corpo, rossa per il fervore dello spirito; bianca seguendo la virtù, rossa calcando i vizi; bianca per la purità degli affetti, rossa per la mortificazione della carne; bianca amando Dio, rossa compatendo il prossimo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

Sermone sull'Acquedotto
Il Verbo s'è fatto uomo ed abita in mezzo a noi Abita nella nostra memoria, abita nel pensiero, perché egli discende fino alla stesa immaginazione. In che modo, dici? Cioè giacendo nella mangiatoia, riposando in un seno verginale, predicando sulla montagna, passando la notte nella preghiera, pendendo dalla croce, sfigurato nella morte, mostrandosi «libero fra i morti» Ps. 87,6 e imperando sull'inferno, ed anche risuscitando il terzo giorno, mostrando agli Apostoli nelle tracce dei chiodi i segni della vittoria, infine salendo a vista di essi nell'alto dei cieli. Che cosa di tutto ciò non ispira pensieri veri, pii e santi? Qualunque cosa ripensi di ciò, io penso a Dio; e in tutto egli è il mio Dio. Meditare ciò, secondo me, è sapienza, e, a mio giudizio, è prudenza rievocarne il ricordo; la cui dolcezza è come il frutto di mandarlo prodotto in abbondanza dalla verga d'Aronne, e che Maria è andata a cogliere in cielo per riversarlo a profusione su di noi. Nelle altezze infatti e al disopra degli Angeli, Maria ha ricevuto il Verbo dal seno del Padre medesimo.

Marco, Romano, fu Papa sotto l'imperatore Costantino il Grande, e stabilì che il vescovo Ostia, da cui viene consacrato il Romano Pontefice, avesse l'uso del pallio. Edificò in Roma due basiliche, una in Città e l'altra sulla via Ardeatína, che Costantino ingrandì e arricchì di grandi doni. Visse sul soglio pontificio otto mesi, e fu sepolto nel cimitero di Balbina.

When the heresy of the Albigenses was making head against God in the County of Toulouse, and striking deeper roots every day, the holy Dominic, who had but just laid the foundations of the Order of Friars Preachers, threw his whole strength into the travail of plucking these blasphemies up. That he might be fitter for the work, he cried for help with his whole soul to that Blessed Maiden, whose glory the falsehoods of the heretics so insolently assailed, and to whom it hath been granted to trample down every heresy throughout the whole earth. It is said that he had from her a word, bidding him preach up the saying of the Rosary among the people, as a strong help against heresy and sin, and it is wonderful with how stout an heart and how good a success he did the work laid upon him. This Rose-garden (or Rosary) is a certain form of prayer, wherein we say one-hundred-and-fifty times the salutation of the Angel, and the Lord's Prayer between every ten times, and, each of the fifteen times that we say the Lord's Prayer, and repeat tenfold the salutation, think of one of fifteen great events in the history of our Redemption. From that time forth this form of godly prayer was extraordinarily spread about by holy Dominic, and waxed common. That this same Dominic was the founder and prime mover thereof hath been said by Popes in diverse letters of the Apostolic See.

From this healthy exercise have grown up numberless good fruits in the Christian Commonwealth. Among these deserveth well to be named that great victory over the Sultan of Turkey, which the most holy Pope Pius V, and the Christian Princes whom he had roused, won at Lepanto, (on the 7th day of October, the first Lord's Day in the month, in the year of our Lord 1571) The day whereon this victory was gained was the very one whereon the Guildbrethren of the most holy Rosary, throughout the whole world, were used to offer their accustomed prayers and appointed supplications, and the event therefore was not unnaturally connected therewith. This being the avowed opinion of Gregory XIII, he ordered that in all Churches where there was, or should be, an Altar of the Rosary, a Feast, in the form of a Greater Double, should be kept for ever upon the first Lord's Day of the month of October, to give unceasing thanks to the Blessed Virgin, under her style of (Queen of) the (Most Holy) Rosary, for that extraordinary mercy of God. Other Popes also have granted almost numberless Indulgences to those who say the Rosary, and to those who join its Guilds.

In the year 1716, Charles VI, Elect-Emperor of the Romans, won a famous victory over countless hordes of Turks, near Timisoara, in the kingdom of Hungary, upon the day when the Feast of the Dedication of the Church of St. Mary of the Snows was being kept, and almost at the very moment when the Guild-brethren of the most holy Rosary were moving through the streets of Rome in public and solemn procession, amid vast multitudes, all filled with the deepest enthusiasm, calling vehemently upon God for the defeat of the Turks, and entreating the Virgin Mother of God to bring the might of her succour to the help of the Christians. A few days later, (upon the Octave of the Feast of the Assumption,) the Turks raised the siege of Corfu. These mercies Clement XI devoutly ascribed to the helpful prayers of the Blessed Virgin, and that the memory and the sweetness of such a blessing might for all time coming endure gloriously, he extended to the whole Church the observance of the Feast of the most holy Rosary, for the same day and of the same rank, (as it had already been in the places before mentioned.) Benedict XIII commanded the record of all these things to be given a place in the Service-book of the Church of Rome; and Leo XIII, in the most troublous times of the Church and the cruel storm of long pressing evils, by fresh Apostolic letters vehemently urged upon all the faithful throughout the earth the often saying of the Rosary of (the Blessed Virgin) Mary, raised the dignity of the yearly festival, added to the Litany of Loretto the Invocation Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, and granted to the whole Church a special Office for this solemn occasion. Let us all then be earnest in honouring the most holy Mother of God in this form which she liketh so well, that even as the entreaties of Christ's faithful people, approaching her in her Garden of Roses, have so often won her to scatter and destroy their earthly foes, so she may gain for them the victory over their hellish foes likewise.

To commend His Own love towards us, and to bring to nought the wisdom of men, God was pleased to take flesh of a woman, albeit a virgin, that He might bring like against like, heal by opposites, pluck out the poisonous thorn, and blot out mightily the handwriting of our sin that was against us. Eve was a thorn, Mary is a rose. Eve is a thorn that pierceth, Mary is a rose that charmeth all the senses. Eve was a thorn that fixed death into all, Mary is a rose that bringeth health to all. Mary was a white rose through her virginity, and a red rose through her love. She was white in her flesh, red in her mind; white in that she followed the path of grace, red in that she trod down sin; white by the purity of her affections, red by the mortification of her body; white by her love for God, red by her compassion for her neighbour.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. As the vine brought I forth pleasant savour;

On the 8th day of October we keep the Feast of the holy Widow Bridget, (Princess of Nericia.) After many pilgrimages to holy places she died at Rome, full of the Spirit of God, upon the 23rd day of July, (in the year 1373) But her body was taken to Sweden upon the 7th day of October.
