Simone, il Cananeo, detto pure Zelote, e Taddeo, chiamato nel Vangelo anche Giuda, fratello di Giacomo, è scrittore di una delle Lettere cattoliche; questi percorse la Mesopotamia e quegli l'Egitto predicando il Vangelo. Poi riunitisi nella Persia, dopo avervi partorito a Gesù Cristo innumerevoli figli e disseminata la fede in quelle vastissime regioni e fra quei popoli barbari, illustrarono insieme il santissimo nome di Gesù Cristo colla dottrina, coi miracoli, e infine con glorioso martirio.

Omelia 30ma sui Vangeli, dopo la metà.
È stato scritto: «Lo Spirito del Signore ornò i cieli». Ornamenti dei cieli sono infatti le virtù dei predicatori, e di certo essi vengono elencati da Paolo quando dice: «A chi è dato per mezzo dello Spirito il linguaggio della sapienza, a chi il linguaggio della scienza, secondo il medesimo Spirito; a chi la fede per mezzo del medesimo Spirito; a chi il dono delle guarigioni, per quest'unico e medesimo Spirito, a chi il potere di operare miracoli, a chi la profezia, a chi il discernimento degli spiriti, a chi ogni genere di lingue, a chi il dono di interpretarle. Ma tutte queste cose le opera l'unico e medesimo Spirito, distribuendole a ciascuno come vuole».

Quanti sono dunque i doni tanti sono gli ornamenti dei predicatori del cielo. Onde, ancora è stato scritto : «Per il Verbo del Signore furono stabiliti i cieli». Il Verbo del Signore è infatti il Figlio del Padre. Ma per dimostrare come tutta insieme la Trinità santa abbia creato questi stessi cieli, cioè i santi apostoli, riguardo alla divinità dello Spirito Santo si aggiunge subito: «E con lo Spirito della sua bocca tutta la loro virtù». Dunque la virtù dei cieli proviene dallo Spirito; perché non avrebbero potuto andar contro le potestà di questo mondo, se non li avesse corroborati la fortezza dello Spirito Santo. Sappiamo infatti quali siano stati i dottori della santa Chiesa prima della venuta di questo Spirito; e noi vediamo di quale forza siano stati
dotati dopo la sua venuta.

℟. Questi sono i trionfatori e amici di Dio che, disprezzando le imposizioni dei potenti, hanno meritato le eterne ricompense;

Trattato 87 su Giovanni
Nella lezione del Vangelo precedente, il Signore aveva detto: «Non siete voi che avete scelto me; ma son io che ho scelto voi, e vi ho designati, perché andiate, e produciate frutto, e il vostro frutto sia duraturo: così tutto quello che chiederete al Padre in nome mio, egli ve lo darà» Joann. 15,16. Qui invece dice: «Questo io vi ordino, che vi amiate l'un l'altro» Joann. 15,17. Questo deve farci comprendere che il nostro frutto è quello di cui dice: «Sono io che ho scelto voi, perché andiate, e produciate frutto, e il vostro frutto sia duraturo». E quanto a ciò che aggiunse «Così tutto quello che chiederete al Padre in nome mio, egli ve lo darà», questi ce lo darà certamente, se ci ameremo l'un l'altro; avendoci dato lui stesso questo precetto, scegliendoci mentre eravamo senza frutto, dacché senza che noi l'avessimo scelto, egli ci ha designati perché produciamo frutto, cioè ci amiamo l'un l'altro.

℟. Questi sono coloro che, vivendo nella carne, hanno fondato la Chiesa col loro sangue:

Il nostro frutto dunque è la carità, quella che l'Apostolo definisce; «Da un cuore puro e da una buona coscienza, e da una fede non finta» Tim. 1,5.Con questa amiamoci l'un l'altro, con questa amiamo Dio; perché non ci ameremo l'un l'altro di vero amore, se non amiamo Dio. Infatti allora uno ama il suo prossimo come se stesso, quando ama Dio. Perché, se non ama Dio, non ama se stesso; e in questi due precetti dell'amore «si contiene tutta la legge e i profeti» Matth. 22,40. Questo dunque è il nostro frutto. Perciò ingiungendoci di produr frutto, dice «Questo io vi ordino, che vi amiate l'un l'altro» Joann. 15,17. Quindi anche l'Apostolo Paolo, volendo raccomandare i frutti dello spirito in opposizione alle opere della carne, comincia da questo amore: «Il frutto, dice, dello spirito è la carità» Gal. 5.22; e poi enumera tutti gli altri, siccome da essa derivanti e con essa collegati, cioè «il gaudio, la pace, la longanimità, la benignità, la bontà, la fede, la mansuetudine, la continenza, la castità».

Ora, ha egli una gioia ragionevole chi non ama il bene onde gioisce? Chi può avere vera pace con uno, se non con quello che ama sinceramente? Chi è longanime e paziente e perseverante nella pratica del bene, se non si è accesi d'amore? Chi è benevolo, sa non si ama colui che si assiste? Chi buono, s'egli non lo diviene amando? Chi crede salutevolmente, se non per quella fede che opera mediante la carità? Chi utilmente mansueto, se non lo regola l'amore? Chi s'astiene da ciò che disonora, se non si ama ciò che onora? Con ragione dunque il buon Maestro raccomanda sì frequentemente la carità, come se non dovesse prescriversi ch'essa sola, senza di cui non possono servire gli altri beni, e che non si può avere senza avere anche gli altri beni, che rendono l'uomo veramente buono.

But, to the end that all the Holy Trinity may be made manifest as the Maker of the heavens, that is, of the Apostles, it is straightway added touching God the Holy Ghost: you and all the host of them by the Breath of His mouth. And here He saith: These things I command you, that ye love one another. And by this it is that we must understand what fruit from us it is, whereof He saith: I have chosen, that ye should go, and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain, and so the words added That whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in My Name, He may give it you. He will give unto us when we love one another, since this (mutual love) is itself the gift of Him Who hath chosen us when as yet we were fruitless, since it hath not been we who have chosen Him, (but He Who hath chosen us,) and ordained us, that we should go, and bring forth fruit, that is to say, should love one another.

Dacci oggi il nostro pane quotidiano, rimetti a noi i nostri debiti, come noi li rimettiamo ai nostri debitori e non ci indurre in tentazione, ma liberaci dal male. Amen.
Ave, o Maria, piena di grazia, il Signore è con te. Tu sei benedetta tra le donne e benedetto è il frutto del tuo seno, Gesù. Santa Maria, Madre di Dio, prega per noi peccatori, adesso e nell'ora della nostra morte. Amen.

Poi, con voce udibile, si dice il Versetto:
℣. Provvedi, ✠ o Dio, al mio soccorso.
℟. Signore, affrettati ad aiutarmi.
Gloria al Padre, e al Figlio, * e allo Spirito Santo.
