Sermone 2 sull'Epifania
Di tanti re che sono nati e che sono morti fra i Giudei, ce n'è forse alcuno che dei Magi abbiano cercato per adorarlo? No, perché nessun altro fu conosciuto con linguaggio celeste. Tuttavia non bisogna dimenticare come questa illuminazione dei Magi fu una gran prova della cecità dei Giudei. Quelli infatti vennero a cercare nel loro paese quello che questi non riconobbero punto.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Ricevi, la luce, ricevi la luce, o Gerusalemme, perché è venuta la tua luce:

Quelli lo trovarono in mezzo ad essi sotto forma di un bambino, questi si rifiutarono di credere in lui (quando lo videro) fra di loro. Degli stranieri accorsi da lungi adorarono nella Giudea Cristo bambino che non pronunziava ancora parola, mentre essi, suoi concittadini, lo crocifissero nel vigore dell'età mentre faceva miracoli. Gli uni l'adorarono come Dio, sebbene in piccole membra, gli altri non ebbero riguardo neppure alla sua umanità, nonostante la grandezza delle sue opere: essi (rimasero increduli) come se fosse maggior prodigio vedere risplendere una nuova stella al suo nascere, piuttosto che vedere il sole oscurarsi alla sua morte.

Orbene la stella che condusse i Magi al luogo dove era il Dio bambino colla Vergine madre, e che poteva sicuramente condurli sino alla città ov'era nato, tuttavia scomparve, né si mostrò più finché non ebbero interrogati gli stessi Giudei intorno alla città in cui doveva nascere il Cristo, ed i Giudei medesimi non l'ebbero indicata secondo la testimonianza della divina Scrittura, dicendo: «In Betlemme di Giuda». Perché ecco ciò che sta scritto: «E tu, Betlemme, terra di Giuda, non sei punto la più piccola tra i capoluoghi di Giuda; perché da te uscirà il Duce che guiderà il mio popolo d'Israele» Mich. 5,2 Che altro mostrò con ciò la divina provvidenza, se non che i Giudei non conservavano che i santi libri, e ch'essi se ne servirebbero per illuminare i Gentili e accecare se stessi?

Omelia 10 sul Vangelo
Or bene, i Magi portano oro, incenso e mirra. L'oro infatti conviene a un Re, l'incenso si offre a Dio nel sacrificio, colla mirra si profumano i corpi dei defunti. I Magi adunque anche con questi mistici doni fanno conoscere chi è colui che adorano: con l'oro, dichiarano ch'egli è Re, con l'incenso ch'è Dio, colla mirra ch'è mortale. Ma ci sono degli eretici che credono alla sua Divinità, ma non ammettono che regni dappertutto. Questi per certo gli offrono l'incenso, ma non vogliono offrirgli anche l'oro. Degli altri riconoscono ch'egli è Re, ma negano che sia Dio. Questi tali gli offrono l'oro, ma non vogliono offrirgli l'incenso.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. La stella che i Magi avean visto in Oriente, li precedeva, finché giunsero sul luogo ove era il bambino:

E ci sono degli altri ancora che lo confessano Dio e Re, ma negano che abbia assunto un corpo mortale. Questi tali per certo gli offrono oro ed incenso, ma non vogliono offrirgli la mirra, emblema dell'assunta umanità. Noi pertanto offriamo al neonato Signore l'oro, riconoscendo ch'egli regna dovunque: offriamogli l'incenso, credendo che colui ch'è apparso nel tempo, era Dio prima d'ogni tempo: offriamogli la mirra, credendo ch'egli impassibile nella sua divinità, fu mortale nella nostra carne.

℟. Vedendo i Magi la stella, gioirono di grandissima gioia:

Ma all'oro, incenso e mirra si può dare anche un'altra significazione. Dacché con l'oro viene indicata la sapienza, secondo attesta Salomone quando dice: «Un tesoro desiderabile riposa sulla bocca del saggio» Pro. 21,20 Sept.. Coll'incenso, che si brucia in onore di Dio, si esprime la virtù della preghiera, secondo attesta il Salmista che dice: «Salga la mia preghiera come l'incenso al tuo cospetto» Ps. 140,2. Nella mirra poi è figurata la mortificazione della nostra carne. Onde la santa Chiesa parlando dei suoi operai che combattono per Iddio fino alla morte, dice: «Le mie mani stillarono mirra» Cant. 5,5.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

The first came from far to find Him, Whom, being born in their midst, the second knew not.

The wise men brought gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Gold is the fitting gift to a King, frankincense is offered in sacrifice to God, and with myrrh are embalmed the bodies of the dead. By the gifts, therefore, which they presented unto Him, the wise men set forth three things concerning Him unto Whom they offered them; by the gold, that He was King; by the frankincense, that He was God; and by the myrrh, that He was to die. There are some heretics who believe Him to be God, but confess not His Kingly dominion over all things; these offer unto Him frankincense, but refuse Him gold. There are some others who admit that He is King, but deny that He is God; these present unto Him gold, but will not give Him frankincense.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

There are some other heretics who profess that Christ is both God and King, but not that He took a dying nature; these offer Him gold and frankincense, but not myrrh for the Manhood. Let us, however, present gold unto the new-born Lord, acknowledging His universal Kingship; let us offer unto Him frankincense, confessing that He Who hath been made manifest unto us in time, is God before time was; let us give unto Him myrrh, believing that He Who cannot suffer as touching His Godhead, was made capable of death as touching the manhood which He shareth with us.

There is also another signification in this gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Gold is a type of wisdom; as saith Solomon x In the mouth of the wise abideth a treasure to be desired. Frankincense, which is burnt in honour of God, is a figure of prayer; witness the words of the Psalmist, Ps. cxl. 2: Let my prayer be set forth as incense before thee. By myrrh is represented the putting to death of the body; as where the holy Church saith of her labourers who strive for God even unto death My hands dropped with myrrh. Cant. v. 5.

Ad Antiochia, sotto Diocleziano e Massimiàno, il natale dei santi Giuliàno Martire e Basilissa Vergine, moglie del medesimo Giuliàno. Questa, avendo col marito conservata la verginità, in pace finì la vita; Giuliàno poi, dopo che vide arsa viva una moltitudine di Sacerdoti e di Ministri della Chiesa di Cristo, i quali, per la crudeltà della persecuzione, si erano rifugiati presso di loro, anch'egli per ordine del Preside Marciàno fu straziato con moltissimi tormenti e condannato alla pena capitale. Con lui patirono pure António Prete, Anastàsio, che dal medesimo Giuliàno era stato risuscitato da morte e fatto partecipe della grazia di Cristo, Celso fanciullo insieme con sua madre Marcionilla, sette fratelli, e moltissimi altri.

Martyrology {anticipated}
January 9th 2026, the 20th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Antioch, in the persecution under the Emperors Diocletian and Maximian, the holy martyr Julian, along with whom is commemorated the holy Virgin Basilissa, his wife, who kept her virginity with her husband and ended her life in peace. A multitude of priests and ministers of the Church of Christ had taken refuge with them because of the fury of the persecution. They were burnt with fire, and Julian, by command of the President Marcian, was thereafter made to suffer many torments and was then beheaded.
Along with him there suffered also the Priest Anthony and Anastasius, whom Julian had raised from the dead and made a partaker of the grace of Christ, and the lad Celsus, together with his mother, Marcionilla, and seven brethren, and many others.
In Morocco, (in the fourth century,) the holy Virgin and martyr Marciana, who was thrown to wild beasts and so finished her testimony.
At Smyrna, the holy martyrs Vitalis (probably a Bishop, and the others were most likely Deacons), Revocatus, and Fortunatus.
In Africa, the holy martyrs Epictetus, Jucundus, Secundus, Vitalis, Felix, and seven others, (in the year 205.)
At Sebaste, in Armenia, (in the year 392,) holy Peter, Bishop (of that see,) brother of holy Basil the Great (also of St. Gregory of Nyssa. His father was St. Basil the Elder, his mother St. Emmelia, and his grandmother St. Macrina. He was made head of his convent in the year 362, when St. Basil was made bishop, St. Basil having before been Abbot thereof.)
At Ancona, holy Marcellinus, Bishop of that city, the which, as holy Gregory writeth, he did through the power of God deliver from burning. (He succeeded St. Traso in the Bishopric about the year 550, and was followed by St. Thomas about the year 569. He is secondary Patron of Ancona.)
