Magi sono venuti dall'Oriente ad adorare il bambino della Vergine. Questo il giorno che oggi celebriamo: a questa solennità noi offriamo il tributo di un sermone. Questo giorno che prima risplendé per essi, lo riconduce a noi ogni anno questa festa. Essi erano le primizie della Gentilità, noi siamo il popolo di essa Gentilità. A noi l'annunziò la lingua degli Apostoli, ad essi una stella quasi lingua dei cieli; a noi gli stessi Apostoli, quasi altri cieli, hanno annunziato la gloria di Dio.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Ricevi, la luce, ricevi la luce, o Gerusalemme, perché è venuta la tua luce:
* E la gloria del Signore è spuntata su di te.

Grande mistero: egli giaceva in una mangiatoia, e conduceva i Magi dall'Oriente. Era nascosto in una stalla, e veniva proclamato dal cielo; affinché così proclamato nel cielo, fosse riconosciuto nella stalla, ciò che diede a questo giorno il nome d'Epifania, che in Latino può tradursi per manifestazione; giorno che mostra la grandezza e l'umiltà di lui, poiché gli astri rivelarono lungi nel cielo la sua grandezza, affinché coloro che lo cercavano, lo trovassero in un angusto abituro, sotto l'apparenza della debolezza, con membra d'un neonato, avvolto in fascie di fanciullo, e (così) fosse adorato dai Magi e temuto dai cattivi.

Perché il re Erode lo temé allorché n'ebbe l'annunzio dai Magi, ancora in cerca di questo bambino appena nato, di cui il cielo aveva loro attestato la nascita. Che sarà mai il tribunale di lui giudice, se la culla di lui infante faceva tremare dei re superbi? Quanto meglio ispirati sono i re, allorché lo cercano, non come Erode per ucciderlo, ma per adorarlo come i Magi; ora soprattutto che egli ha sofferto per gli stessi nemici, e da parte di essi nemici, la morte che il nemico desiderava infliggergli, e, subendola nel suo proprio corpo l'ha uccisa. Se un re empio lo temé quando ancora succhiava il latte materno, i re n'abbiano un santo timore ora ch'egli siede alla destra del Padre.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. I Magi dall'Oriente arrivarono a Gerusalemme cercando e dicendo: Dove è colui ch'è nato, del quale abbiam visto la stella?

Omelia 10 sul Vangelo
Appresa la nascita del nostro Re, Erode ricorre all'astuzia; e per timore d'essere privato d'un regno terreno, domanda che gli venga fatto sapere dove si trovi il bambino. Fa mostra di volerlo adorare, affin di sopprimerlo, se riesce a trovarlo. Ma che vale la malizia umana contro i disegni di Dio? Infatti sta scritto: «Non c'è sapienza, non c'è prudenza, non c'è accorgimento contro il Signore» Prov. 21,20. Giacché la stella ch'era apparsa, guida i Magi: essi trovano il Re neonato, gli offrono dei doni; e sono avvisati in sogno di non ripassare da Erode. E così avviene, che Erode non può trovare Gesù che cerca. Di chi è immagine questo principe, se non degli ipocriti, i quali, perché cercano fintamente il Signore, non meritano mai di trovarlo?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. La stella che i Magi avean visto in Oriente, li precedeva, finché giunsero sul luogo ove era il bambino:
* E vedendola, gioirono di grandissima gioia.

Ora è da sapere, tra l'altro, che gli eretici Priscillianisti credono che ogni uomo nasca sotto l'influenza di certe costellazioni: e a comprova del loro errore recano il fatto della nuova stella che apparve quando il Signore venne al mondo, immaginandosi che questa stella fosse il suo destino. Ma se esaminiamo le parole del Vangelo, che dice di questa stella: «Finché, giunta sul luogo ov'era il bambino, si fermò»; (vediamo) che non fu il bambino che corse alla stella, ma la stella al bambino, e, s'è lecito esprimersi così, non già la stella fu il destino del bambino, ma il bambino che apparve fu il destino della stella.

℟. Vedendo i Magi la stella, gioirono di grandissima gioia:

Ma sia lungi dai cuori dei fedeli il dire che il destino sia qualche cosa. Perché la vita degli uomini, solo il Creatore, che l'ha prodotta, la governa. Difatti non l'uomo è stato fatto per le stelle, ma le stelle per l'uomo; e dire che una stella è il destino d'un uomo, sarebbe affermare che l'uomo è sottoposto a ciò ch'è stato creato per servirlo. Certo, quando Giacobbe, nell'uscire dal seno materno, teneva colla mano il piede del fratello maggiore, questi non era ancora interamente venuto al mondo, che già l'altro cominciava a nascere; eppure, benché la madre li mettesse al mondo ambedue nello stesso tempo e nello stesso momento, non fu la stessa la vita dell'uno e quella dell'altro.

On them that day first broke in gladness, which year by year, now cometh round to us for celebration. They were the first-fruits of that Gentile Church whereof we are the in-gathering. To us the voice of Apostles, to them a star, as a voice from heaven, proclaimed the advent of a Saviour; and to us the voice of the Apostolic preachers is also as a voice from heaven, a heaven declaring the glory of God.

When Herod knew of the birth of our King, he betook himself to his cunning wiles, and lest he should be deprived of an earthly kingdom he desired the wise men to search diligently for the young Child, and when they had found Him, to bring him word again. He said, that he also might come and worship Him, but, in reality, that, when he had found Him, he might put Him to death. But, behold, of how light weight is the malice of man, when it is tried against the counsel of God. It is written There is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel, against the Lord, Prov. xxi. 30. So the star which the wise men saw in the East, still led them on; they found the new-born King, and presented unto Him gifts; then they were warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod. And as it came to pass that, when Herod sought Jesus, he could not find Him even so is it with hypocrites, who, while they make pretence to seek the Lord to worship Him, find Him not.

It is as well to know that it is one of the opinions of the Priscillianist heretics l that every man is born under the influence of a star; and, to confirm this notion, they bring forward the instance of the star of Bethlehem, which appeared when the Lord was born; and which they call His star, that is, the star ruling over His fate or destiny. But if we consider the words of the Gospel concerning this star, they are It went before, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. Whence we see that it was not the young Child Who followed the star, but the star which followed the young Child, as if to show that the young Child ruled the star, instead of the star ruling Him.

A Venézia la deposizione di san Lorénzo Giustiniàni, primo Patriarca della medesima città e Confessore, il quale, abbondantissimamente ripieno di dottrina e di superni doni di divina sapienza, fu ascritto dal Sommo Pontefice Alessandro ottavo nel numero dei Santi. La sua festa si celebra specialmente il cinque Settembre, giorno nel quale salì alla sede episcopale.
A Beauvais, in Frància, i santi Martiri Luciano Prete, Massimiano e Giuliano. Di questi i due ultimi furono uccisi dai persecutori con la spada; il beato Luciano poi, che con san Dionigi si era recato in Frància, dopo essere stato lungamente flagellato, non avendo temuto di confessare a gran voce il nome di Cristo, ricevette la sentenza degli altri due.
Nella Libia i santi Martiri Teófilo Diacono ed Ellàdio, i quali, prima straziati e feriti con acutissimi cocci, da ultimo, gettati nei fuoco, resero le anime a Dio.

Martyrology {anticipated}
January 8th 2026, the 19th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Beauvais, in Gaul, the holy martyrs Lucian the Priest (first Bishop of that see,) Maximian, and Julian. Maximian and Julian were slain by the persecutors with the sword, but the blessed Lucian, who had come into Gaul with holy Denis, did not receive the like treatment until after great suffering, the which notwithstanding, he feared not to confess aloud the name of Christ. (He died in the year 312.)
Likewise the holy martyr Eugenian (Bishop of Autun.)
In Libya, the holy martyrs Theophilus the Deacon, and Helladius, who were first torn and mangled with sharp potsherds, and then cast into the fire, and so gave up their souls to God.
At Venice, (in the year 1455,) the blessed Confessor Lawrence de' Giustiniani, the first Patriarch of that city he was filled very abundantly with learning and gifts of divine wisdom from on high, and Alexander VIII. enrolled his name among those of the saints. We keep his festival upon the fifth day of September.
At Hierapolis, in Asia, holy Apollinaris, Bishop (of that see,) who was eminent for holiness and learning, in the time of the Emperor Marcus Antoninus Verus.
At Naples, in Campania, holy Severinus, Bishop (of that see,) brother of the blessed martyr Victorinus he wrought many good works, and fell asleep full of holiness, (in the year 540.)
At Pavia, the holy Confessor Maximus, Bishop (of that see, successor to St Epiphanius. He took part in the 4th and 6th Councils of Rome, held by Pope Symmachus against the Antipope Lawrence at the beginning of the sixth century.)

At Metz, holy Patient, Bishop (of that see, in the second century.)
On the same day, (in the year 482,) in Bavaria, the holy Abbot Severinus, who spread the Gospel among that people, and is called the Apostle of the (Austrians and) Bavarians. His body was, by the will of God, brought to Montefeltro, near Naples, and thence it hath been since taken to the monastery of St. Severino.

Ave, o Maria, piena di grazia, il Signore è con te. Tu sei benedetta tra le donne e benedetto è il frutto del tuo seno, Gesù. Santa Maria, Madre di Dio, prega per noi peccatori, adesso e nell'ora della nostra morte. Amen.
