Gioite nel Signore, o dilettissimi, di nuovo dico, gioite: perché dopo breve intervallo di tempo dalla solennità della Nascita di Cristo, risplende la festa della sua manifestazione: e colui che in quel giorno la Vergine diede alla luce, il mondo l'ha riconosciuto quest'oggi. Infatti il Verbo fatto uomo dispose il suo ingresso nel mondo in tal maniera, che il bambino Gesù fu manifestato ai credenti e occultato ai suoi persecutori. Fin d'all'ora dunque «i cieli proclamarono la gloria di Dio, e il suono della verità si sparse per tutta la terra» Ps. 18,1, quando una schiera d'Angeli apparve ai pastori per annunziare loro la nascita del Salvatore, e una stella fu di guida ai Magi per venire ad adorarlo; affinché dall'oriente fino all'occidente risplendesse la venuta del vero Re, perché così i regni d'Oriente appresero dai Magi gli elementi della fede, ed essi non rimasero nascosti all'impero Romano.

Poiché anche la crudeltà d'Erode, che voleva soffocare in sul nascere il Re che gli era sospetto, serviva, a sua insaputa, a questa diffusione della fede; ché, mentre intento a un atroce delitto perseguitava, con un massacro generale di bambini, l'ignoto bambino, ovunque più solennemente si spargeva la fama della nascita annunziata dal dominatore del cielo, rendendola più pronta e più atta alla divulgazione, e la novità d'un segno nuovo nel cielo e l'empietà del crudelissimo persecutore. Allora pertanto il Salvatore fu portato anche in Egitto, affinché questo popolo, in preda a vecchi errori, fosse preparato, con una grazia secreta, a ricevere la sua prossima salute; e affinché, prima ancora d'aver bandito dall'animo la superstizione, ricevesse già ospite la stessa verità.

Riconosciamo dunque, o dilettissimi, nei Magi adoratori di Cristo, le primizie della nostra vocazione e della nostra fede; e con animo esultante celebriamo i princìpi di questa beata speranza. Poiché fin d'allora cominciammo ad entrare nell'eterna eredità: fin d'allora ci si scoprirono i passi misteriosi della Scrittura intorno a Cristo; e la verità, che la cecità dei Giudei non accolse, sparse la sua luce in tutte le nazioni. Omelia 10 sul Vangelo
Come avete udito, fratelli carissimi, nella lettura del Vangelo, un re della terra si turba alla nascita del Re del cielo: ciò perché ogni grandezza terrena rimane confusa allorché si manifesta la grandezza del cielo. Ma noi dobbiamo cercare perché, alla nascita del Redentore, un Angelo apparve ai pastori nella Giudea, mentre non un Angelo, ma una stella condusse i Magi d'Oriente ad adorarlo. Perché cioè i Giudei, servendosi della ragione per conoscerlo, era giusto che lo annunziasse loro una creatura ragionevole, vale a dire, un Angelo: mentre invece i Gentili, perché non sapevano servirsi della ragione, vennero condotti a conoscere il Signore non per mezzo d'una voce, ma con dei segni. Onde anche Paolo dice: «Le profezie sono date ai fedeli e non agl'infedeli; i segni al contrario agl'infedeli e non ai fedeli» 1Cor. 14,22. E così a quelli son date le profezie, perché erano fedeli, non già infedeli; e a questi sono dati i segni, perché erano infedeli, e non fedeli.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. La stella che i Magi avean visto in Oriente, li precedeva, finché giunsero sul luogo ove era il bambino:

Ed è a notare, che allorquando il nostro Redentore sarà giunto all'età d'uomo perfetto, gli Apostoli lo predicheranno agli stessi Gentili, mentre bambino e non ancora capace di parlare con gli organi corporali, una stella lo annunzia alla Gentilità: ciò senza dubbio perché l'ordine della ragione richiedeva che fossero dei predicatori che parlassero per farci conoscere il Signore, quando lui stesso avesse parlato, e che dei muti elementi l'annunziassero quando egli non parlava ancora. Ma in tutti i prodigi che apparvero sia alla nascita del Signore, sia alla morte di lui, noi dobbiamo considerare quale fu la durezza di cuore di quei Giudei, i quali non lo riconobbero né al dono della profezia, né ai suoi miracoli.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Vedendo i Magi la stella, gioirono di grandissima gioia:

Tutti infatti gli elementi resero testimonianza alla venuta del loro autore. E per parlare di essi secondo il linguaggio umano: i cieli lo riconobbero Dio, perché inviarono subito la stella. Lo riconobbe il mare, perché sotto i suoi piedi si addimostrò traversabile. Lo riconobbe la terra, perché tremò alla morte di lui. Lo riconobbe il sole, perché nascose la luce dei suoi raggi. Lo riconobbero i sassi e le pareti, perché al momento della sua morte si spezzarono. Lo riconobbe l'inferno, perché restituì i morti che teneva. E tuttavia, colui che tutti gli insensibili elementi riconobbero per Signore, i cuori degli infedeli Giudei ancora non lo riconoscono per Dio, e, più duri dei sassi, non si vogliono aprire al pentimento.

On that day the Virgin brought Him forth, and on this the world knew Him. The Word made Flesh was pleased to reveal Himself by degrees to those for whom He had come. When Jesus was born He was manifested indeed to the believing, but hidden from His enemies. Already indeed the heavens declared the glory of God, and their sound went out into all lands, when the Herald Angels appeared to tell to the shepherds the glad tidings of a Saviour's Birth; and now the guiding star leadeth the wise men to worship Him, that from the rising of the sun to the going down thereof, the Birth of the true King may be known abroad; that through those wise men the kingdoms of the east might learn the great truth, and the Roman empire remain no more in darkness.

The very cruelty of Herod, when he strove to crush at His birth this King Whom he alone feared, was made a blind means to carry out this dispensation of mercy. While the tyrant with horrid guilt sought to slay the little Child he did not know, amid an indiscriminate slaughter of innocents, his infamous act served to spread wider abroad the heaven-told news of the Birth of the Lord. Thus were these glad tidings loudly proclaimed, both by the novelty of their story, and the iniquity of their enemies. Then was the Saviour borne into Egypt, that nation, of a long time hardened in idolatry, might by the mysterious virtue which went out of Him, even when His presence was unknown, be prepared for the saving light so soon to dawn on them, and might receive the Truth as a wanderer even before they had banished falsehood.

Dearly beloved brethren, hear ye from the Gospel lesson how, when the King of heaven was born, the king of earth was troubled? The heights of heaven are opened and the depths of earth are stirred. Let us now consider the question, why, when the Redeemer was born, an angel brought the news to the shepherds of Judea, but a star led the wise men of the East to worship Him. It seemeth as if the Jews as reasonable creatures received a revelation from a reasonable being, that is, an angel, but the Gentiles without, being as brutes, are roused not by a voice, but by a sign, that is, a star. Hence Paul hath it: a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. 1 Cor. xiv. 22. So the prophesying, that is, of the angel was given to them that believed, and the sign to them that believed not.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

At Nicomedia, for confessing Christ, in the persecution under the Emperor Galerius Maximian, the blessed martyr Lucian, priest of the Church of Antioch, distinguished for his learning and eloquence, whose praise hath been recorded by holy John Chrysostom. He is buried at Helenopolis in Bithynia.
At Antioch, the holy martyr the deacon Cleri, who on account of his glorious confession was seven times put to the torture, suffered long in prison, and at length was beheaded.
In the city of Heraclea, the holy martyrs Felix and Januarius.
On the same day, the holy martyr Julian.
In Denmark (in the year 1086), the holy martyr King Canute (IV.), whose feast is kept on January 19 (although not in England).
At Pavia, the holy confessor Crispin (I.), bishop of that see (in the year 248).
In Dacia, the holy bishop Nicetas, who by his preaching of the Gospel caused savage and barbarous tribes to become mild and gentle. (Fifth century.)
