8:2 Perché la legge dello spirito di vita (che è) in Gesù Cristo mi ha liberato dalla legge del peccato e dalla morte.
8:3 Dacché quello che era impossibile alla legge, perché era inferma per ragione della carne. Dio mandando il suo Figlio in una carne simile a quella del peccato a motivo del peccato, condannò il peccato nella carne,
8:4 affinché la giustizia della legge si compisse in noi che non camminiamo secondo la carne, ma secondo lo spirito.

Oggi si è compiuta quella profezia che dice: «Mandate, o cieli, dall'alto, la vostra rugiada, e le nubi piovano il giusto: si apra la terra, e germogli il Salvatore» Sal 118,67. Il creatore dunque è divenuto creatura, al fine di ritrovare chi si era perduto. Così infatti l'uomo lo riconosce nei Salmi: «Prima d'essere umiliato, io peccai» Sal 118,67. L'uomo ha peccato, ed è divenuto colpevole: Dio è nato uomo per liberare il colpevole. L'uomo dunque è caduto, ma Dio è disceso. L'uomo cadde miserevolmente, e Dio discese misericordiosamente; l'uomo cadde per superbia, Dio discese colla sua grazia.

Non disse: «Prese suo figlio e sua moglie», ma «il Bambino e la Madre di lui»; essendo egli il nutrizio, non il marito.

Ma udito che Archelao regnava in Giudea invece di Erode suo padre, temette di andare colà» Mt 2,22. Molti qui cadono in errore per ignoranza della storia, stimando essere lo stesso Erode quello che si burla del Signore durante la sua passione e quello che qui affermasi morto. Quell'Erode dunque che poi fece amicizia con Pilato è il figlio di questo Erode e il fratello di Archelao.

From the words, they are dead, (in the Plural), which are used in this passage of the Gospel, we may understand that there were others beside Herod which sought the young Child's life probably the Priests and Scribes. And he Joseph arose, and took the young Child and His Mother. It is not written, He took his wife and child, but he took the young Child and His Mother; whence it is clear that the holy Evangelist willeth to imply that Joseph was not the father, but the Guardian of Jesus, not the husband, but the Betrothed of Mary.

There are some persons so grossly ignorant of history that they confuse themselves over the two Herods, as if the one mentioned here were the same who afterwards set our Lord at nought during His Passion, and they cannot understand how he should now be said to be dead. The Herod who was made friends with Pilate over Christ's death, was the son of the Herod who massacred the infants of Bethlehem, and the brother of Archelaus.

Reading 9
He shall be called a Nazarene. The Evangelist, in quoting these words, saith that they were spoken by the Prophets, (Plural). If he had been citing any one precise passage he would have said by the Prophet, in the Singular. But he is citing the sense of the Prophets, and not any individual passage in any of their writings. He seemeth to refer to the fact that in Hebrew the word Nazarene signifieth holy, and that Christ is the Holy One of God is the common declaration of all the Scriptures.

A Firenze il natale di sant'Andréa Corsini, cittadino di Firenze, dell'Ordine dei Carmelitani, Vescovo di Fiésole e Confessore, il quale, celebre per miracoli, dal Papa Urbano ottavo fu ascritto nel numero dei Santi. La sua festa però si celebra il quattro Febbraio.
Così pure a Barcellona, nella Spagna, il natale di san Raimondo di Penafort, dell'Ordine dei Predicatori, Confessore, celebre per dottrina e per santità. La sua festa si celebra il ventitre del corrente mese.
In Africa la commemorazione di molti santi Martiri, che nella persecuzione di Sevèro furono legati ad un palo e finiti col fuoco.
Nel territorio di Reims il martirio di santa Macra Vergine, la quale, nella persecuzione di Diocleziano, per ordine del Preside Riziovàro, essendo stata gettata nel fuoco e restandone illesa, tormentata quindi col taglio delle mammelle e con lo squallore del carcere, e voltolata ancora sopra acutissimi cocci e carboni accesi, alla fine, pregando, se ne andò al Signore.

January 6th 2026, the 17th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

In the country of Reims, by command of the President Rictiovarus, in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian, the holy virgin and martyr Macra she was first cast into the fire but remained unhurt, whereupon her breasts were cut off, and she was thrust into a prison and rolled upon sharp potsherds and live coals until she passed away in prayer to be ever with the Lord.
On the same day are commemorated many holy martyrs in Africa, who were burnt at the stake in the persecution under the Emperor Severus.
At Rennes, in Gaul, the holy confessor Melanius (Abbot of Platz) (in the year 511), bishop of that see, who after countless works of power passed gloriously out of this world to that heaven where his heart was already fixed (in the year 530).
At Florence, holy Andrew Corsini of that city, a Carmelite friar, Bishop of Fiesoli, who was famous for miracles (in the year 1373), and whose name was numbered by Urban VIII. among those of the Saints, whose feast we keep upon the 4th day of February.
At Geris, in Egypt, the holy hermit Nilammon, who gave up his soul in prayer to God while he was being haled against his will to make him a bishop (fifth century).
