Sermone 15 sulla Cantica, verso la metà
Non senza motivo lo Spirito Santo rassomiglia il nome dello Sposo all'olio, ed ispira alla sposa di gridare allo Sposo: «Un olio sparso è il tuo nome» Cant. 1,2. L'olio infatti illumina, nutrisce e unge. Alimenta il fuoco, nutrisce il corpo, lenisce il dolore è luce, cibo, medicina. Osserva ora lo stesso anche nel nome dello Sposo: Illumina predicato, pasce meditato, lenisce e unge invocato. Esaminiamo ciascuna di queste qualità. Donde credi sì grande e così repentina luce di fede in tutto il mondo, se non dalla predicazione del nome di Gesù? Non è forse per la luce di questo nome che Dio ci chiamò all'ammirabile sua luce; onde illuminati e vedendo in questa luce un'altra luce, meritatamente Paolo ci dice «Foste una volta tenebre, ma ora siete luce nel Signore»? Eph. 5,8.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Sperino in te quelli che han conosciuto il tuo nome.
* Poiché tu non hai abbandonato mai quelli che ti cercano, o Signore.

Infine lo stesso Apostolo ricevé ordine di portare questo nome dinanzi ai re, ai Gentili, e ai figli d'Israele; e portava il nome come un lume, ne illuminava la sua patria e gridava dappertutto: «La notte è inoltrata, e il giorno si avvicina. Gettiamo via dunque le opere delle tenebre, e indossiamo le armi della luce: camminiamo onestamente, come in pieno giorno» Rom. 13,12. E mostrava a tutti la lucerna sul candelabro, annunziando in ogni luogo Gesù crocifisso. Come questa luce risplendé ed abbagliò gli occhi di tutti i riguardanti allorché, uscendo dalla bocca di Pietro come folgore, si consolidarono le piante e le caviglie d'uno storpio e illuminò molti ciechi spiritualmente? Non gettò forse delle fiamme allorché disse «In nome di Gesù Nazzareno alzati e cammina»?Act. 3,6.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Diamo lode al nome tuo grande,
* Perché è terribile e santo.
℣. Quelli confidano nei cocchi e questi nei cavalli, noi invece invocheremo il nome del Signore

Né solo è luce il nome di il Gesù, ma anche cibo. Non ti senti forse confortata ogni qual volta lo ricordi? Che c'è che com'esso nutrisca lo spirito di chi lo pensa? Che c'è che colmi così i cuori agitati, rinvigorisca le virtù, sviluppi le abitudini buone e oneste e nutrisca i casti affetti? Arido è ogni cibo dell'anima, se non è cosparso di questo olio; è insipido, se non è condito con questo sale. Se scrivi, non mi sa di niente, se non vi leggo Gesù. Se disputi, o tieni conferenza non mi piace, se non vi sento Gesù. Gesù è miele alla bocca, melodia all'orecchio, giubilo al cuore. Ma è anche medicina. Uno di voi è afflitto? Venga nel suo cuore Gesù, e di lì salga alla sua bocca, Ed ecco al sorgere della luce di questo nome, svanisce ogni nebbia, torna il sereno. Cade uno in peccato? corre anzi disperato al laccio di morte? Non è forse vero che, se invocherà questo nome, comincerà subito a respirare e a vivere?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Si rallegrino tutti quelli che sperano in te, o Signore, essi esulteranno in eterno, e tu abiterai in essi, e si glorieranno in te tutti quelli,

Sermone 1 sulla Circoncisione
Grande e mirabile mistero! Si circoncide il bambino, ed è chiamato Gesù. Che vuoi dire questo riavvicinamento? La circoncisione infatti, sembra fatta più per chi deve essere salvato che per il Salvatore; e il Salvatore deve piuttosto circoncidere che essere circonciso. Ma riconosci in ciò il mediatore fra Dio e gli uomini, il quale fin dai primi giorni della sua infanzia riavvicina le cose umane alle divine, le più basse alle più alte. Nasce da una donna, ma in tal guisa che il frutto della fecondità non le faccia perdere il flore della verginità. Viene involto in fasce; ma le stesse fasce vengono onorate da canti angelici. È nascosto in una mangiatoia; ma è annunziato da una stella che splende nel cielo. Difatti questo mio Gesù non porta un nome vuoto e vano come gli altri che lo portarono per l'innanzi non è in lui l'ombra d'un gran nome, ma la verità. Poiché l'Evangelista attesta che gli fu posto un nome dal cielo, come l'aveva chiamato l'Angelo prima che fosse concepito nel seno materno. E fa attenzione alla profondità di queste parole: «Dopo che nacque Gesù». Vien chiamato dagli uomini Gesù, lui che era stato chiamato così dall'Angelo prima che fosse concepito nel seno. Poiché egli è insieme Salvatore dell'Angelo e dell'uomo; ma dell'uomo dall'incarnazione, dell'Angelo fin dal principio della sua creazione. «Gli fu posto, dice, il nome di Gesù, com'era stato chiamato dall'Angelo». «Ogni parola si decide sulla deposizione di due o tre testimoni» Deut. 18,15; e questa stessa parola, abbreviata nel Profeta, si legge più chiaramente nel Vangelo che ci mostra il Verbo fatto uomo.

Sermone di sant'Agostino Vescovo
Sermone 1° sugli Innocenti
Colla nascita del Signore incomincia un lutto, non in cielo, ma in terra: le madri si lamentano, gli Angeli esultano, dei fanciulli son tolti dal mondo. È nato un Dio: si devono delle vittime Innocenti a lui che viene per condannare la malizia del mondo,. Si devono immolare degli agnelli, perché l'Agnello che toglie i peccati del mondo, dovrà essere crocifisso. Ma le pecore, loro madri, urlano, perché perdono i loro agnelli che sanno appena belare. Grande martirio, crudele spettacolo! Si sguaina la spada, ma senza alcun motivo: sola strilla la gelosia, perché colui che è nato non commette alcuna violenza. Ma consideriamo le madri che si lamentano sui loro agnelli: «Una voce s'è udita in Rama, gran pianti e urli» Ger 31,15. Esse (si vedono private) di un pegno che non hanno solo ricevuto in custodia, ma generato; non viene dato in deposito, ma è esposto (al macello).
È testimone la stessa natura, che lottava contro i Martiri, quando il tiranno gettava gli infanti. La Madre si strappava i capelli del capo, la quale perdeva l'ornamento del capo. In quanti modi voleva nascondere l'infante, e lo stesso bambinello si palesava. Non sapeva tacere, perché non aveva ancora imparato a temere. La madre lottava, ed anche il carnefice: egli tirava, ella tratteneva. La madre gridava al carnefice: Perché me lo togli, che l'ho generato da me? Il ventre l'ha generato, egli non rimase, quando visse, invano torcendo per il latte le mie poppe. Lo trasportai con cura, mentre lo vedo da essere gettato con mano crudele. Lo hanno appena rilasciato le mie viscere, e tu lo sbatti a terra.
Esclamava un altra madre, mentre l'esattore furfante non obbligava che fosse insieme al piccolo uccisa la madre: Perché mi lasci incolume? Se c'è colpa, è mia: se non c'è crimine, congiungi la morte, e libera la madre. Un'altra diceva: Che cercate? Cercate uno, ed uccidete molti, e all'uno, che è uno, non potete giungere. Un altra al contrario gridava: Vieni già, vieni Salvatore del mondo, quanto aspetti? Non temi nessuno: ti veda il soldato, e non uccida i nostri infanti. Si mescolava il lamento delle madri, e l'offerta dei piccoli se ne andava al cielo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

1st on the Song of Songs
It is not idly that the Holy Ghost likeneth the Name of the Bridegroom to oil, when He maketh the Bride say to the Bridegroom: thy Name is as oil poured forth. Oil indeed giveth light, meat, and unction. It feedeth fire, it nourisheth the flesh, it sootheth pain; it is light, food, and healing. Behold, Thus also is the Name of the Bridegroom. To preach it, is to give light; to think of it, is to feed the soul; to call on it, is to win grace and unction. Let us take it point by point. What, thinkest thou, hath made the light of faith so suddenly and so brightly to shine in the whole world but the preaching of the Name of Jesus? Is it not in the light of this Name that God hath called us into His marvellous light, even that light wherewith we being enlightened, and in His light seeing light, Paul saith truly of us: Ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord.

Reading 6
The Name of Jesus is not a Name of light only, but it is meat also. Dost thou ever call it to mind, and remain unstrengthened? Is there anything like it to enrich the soul of him that thinketh of it? What is there like it to restore the weakened senses, to fortify strength, to give birth to good lives and pure affections? The soul is fed on husks if that whereon it feedeth lack seasoning with this salt. If thou writest, thou hast no meaning for me if I read not of Jesus there. If thou preach, or dispute, thou hast no meaning for me if I hear not of Jesus there. The mention of Jesus is honey in the mouth, music in the ear, and gladness in the heart. It is our healing too. Is any sorrowful among us? Let the thought of Jesus come into his heart, and spring to his mouth. Behold, when the day of that Name beginneth to break, every cloud will flee away, and there will be a great calm. Doth any fall into sin? Doth any draw nigh to an hopeless death? And if he but call on the life-giving Name of Jesus, will he not draw the breath of a new life again?

1st on the Circumcision
Behold a mystery, great and full of wonder! The Child is circumcised, and His Name is called Jesus. Why are these two things thus mentioned together? It would seem that circumcision should rather be for the saved than for the Saviour; that the Saviour ought rather to be Circumciser than circumcised. But behold here the Mediator between God and men, how even from His childhood He joineth the things of the Highest to the things of the lowest, the things of God to the things of men. He is born of a woman, but her womb is made fruitful without the loss of the flower of her virginity. He is wrapped in swaddling-bands, but these swaddling-bands are a theme for the jubilation of angels. He is laid in a manger, but a bright star standeth in heaven over the place. So also in His circumcision, the ceremony gave proof of the reality of the Manhood which He had taken, and that Name which is above every name proclaimed the glory of His Blessed Majesty. As very son of Abraham He underwent circumcision; He assumed the Name of Jesus as very Son of God.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. Sorrow and trouble did I find.

Reading 8
Why Jesus beareth not that Name as others have borne it before Him, as a vain and empty title. It is not in Him the shadow of a great Name, but the very meaning of that Name. That His Name was revealed from heaven, is attested by the Evangelist, where it is written, Which was so named of the Angel before He was conceived in the womb. After Jesus was born, men called Him Jesus, but angels called Him Jesus, before He was conceived in the womb. The One Lord is the Saviour of angels and of men; of men, since His Incarnation; of angels, from the beginning of their creation. His Name, saith the Evangelist, was called Jesus, which was so named of the Angel before He was conceived in the womb. In the mouth therefore of two or three witnesses is every word established; and that word whereof the Prophet spoke as cut short, is set forth at length in the Gospel: the Word made Flesh.

2nd on the Circumcision
It is no wonder that it should be at His circumcision that the Name of Jesus (which is, being interpreted, Saviour) is given to the Child Who is born unto us, for it was then that He for the first time shed that sinless Blood Which is the mean whereby He hath chosen to work out our salvation. It is no matter for the speculation of Christians why the Lord Christ was pleased to be circumcised. He was circumcised for the same reason for which He was born, and for which He suffered. Neither one nor the other was for Himself, but all for the sake of the elect. He was not born in sin; He was not circumcised to separate Him from sin; neither did He die for sins of His own, but for ours. Which was so named of the Angel before He was conceived in the womb. The Angel indeed gave Him that title of Saviour, but not for the first time. Saviour is His Name from everlasting; He hath it of His own proper nature to save. This title He hath in Himself, not by the gift of anything that He hath made, be it man or Angel.

A Roma san Telésforo, Papa e Martire, il quale, sotto Antonino Pio, dopo molte fatiche, per la confessione di Cristo, subì un glorioso martirio.
In Inghiltèrra il natale di sant'Edoardo, Re degl'Inglesi e Confessore; il quale fu insigne per la virtù della castità e per il dono dei miracoli. La sua festa però, per decreto del Papa Innocenzo undecimo, si celebra principalmente il tredici Ottobre, giorno nel quale si fece la traslazione del suo sacro corpo.
In Egitto la commemorazione di molti santi Martiri, i quali nella Tebàide, sotto la persecuzione di Diocleziano, furono uccisi con diversi generi di tormenti.
Ad Antiochia san Simeone Monaco, che visse molti anni stando in piedi sopra una colonna, e perciò fu soprannominato Stilita; la sua vita e conversazione furono ammirabili.

Martyrology {anticipated}
The morrow is the Eve of the Epiphany of the Lord, the same day is the Octave of the holy martyr Thomas, Archbishop of Canterbury.
January 5th 2026, the 16th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, the holy Pope Telesphorus, who toiled much for Christ, and under the Emperor Antoninus Pius obtained by his testimony a glorious martyrdom.
In Egypt are commemorated many holy martyrs who were slain in the Thebaid in diverse ways, in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian.
At Antioch, the holy monk Simeon, who lived for many years standing upon a pillar, whence he is called Stylitis (from the Greek style, which is being interpreted a pillar), whose life and conversation was wonderful (in the year 459).
In England, the holy King Edward, famous for his gift of chastity and of the power of working miracles. By command of Pope Innocent XI his feast is kept upon the 13th day of October, which is the day of the translation of his sacred body (in the year 1066.)
At Alexandria (in the fourth century), holy Syncletica, whose noble acts holy Athanasius hath set before us in his writing.
At Rome, the holy virgin Emiliana, father's sister to holy Gregory the Great. Her sister Tharsilla, who had gone to God before her, came and called her, and upon the same day she passed hence to be for ever with the Lord (sixth century).
