Cristo riceve dunque il sacramento dell'illuminazione, o piuttosto egli illumina noi col suo fulgore: Cristo è battezzato, discendiamo anche noi con lui per ascendere egualmente con lui.

Trattato 6 su Giovanni, prima della metà
Prima che il Signore andasse nel Giordano a ricevere il battesimo da Giovanni, questi lo conosceva, come lo indica con quelle parole: «Tu vieni da me per essere battezzato? son io che devo essere battezzato da te» Matth. 3,14. Ecco dunque ch'egli conosceva il Signore, conosceva il Figlio di Dio. Come proviamo ch'egli sapeva già che Gesù battezzerebbe nello Spirito Santo? Prima che questi arrivasse al fiume, mentre molti correvano da Giovanni per essere battezzati, disse loro: «Quanto a me, io vi battezzo con acqua; ma colui che viene dopo di me è più grande di me, cui non son degno di sciogliere il legaccio dei calzari: egli vi battezzerà nello Spirito Santo e nel fuoco» Lue. 3,16. Egli sapeva già anche questo.

Che apprese egli dunque per mezzo della colomba, perché non sia poi tacciato di menzogna (il che ci guardi Dio dal pensare) se non che ci sarebbe stata in Cristo una certa quale proprietà per la quale la santità del battesimo, sebbene amministrato da molti ministri sia giusti che ingiusti, non sarebbe attribuita se non a colui sul quale discese la colomba, e del quale è detto: «Questi è che battezza nella Spirito Santo?» Joann. 1, 1. Battezzi pure Pietro, è lui che battezza: battezzi Paolo, è lui che battezza: battezzi Giuda, è lui che battezza. Infatti se la santità del battesimo è in proporzione dei meriti di coloro che battezzano, come c'è diversità di meriti, così ci sarà pure diversità di battesimi: e ognuno crederà d'aver ricevuto un sacramento migliore, quanto più il ministro sembrerà meritevole.

Gli uni sono più santi degli altri, gli uni migliori degli altri. Come dunque, per esempio, se uno è battezzato da un ministro giusto e santo, e l'altro da uno inferiore in merito davanti a Dio, inferiore di grado, inferiore per continenza, inferiore per santità di vita, come nondimeno ricevono tutti due una medesima e pari e uguale grazia, se non perché è lui che battezza?

It is true that I am not the Forerunner, but at least I come from the desert. Christ is enlightened, or rather, He enlighteneth us with His own light. Christ is baptized; let us go down with Him into the water, that we may come up with Him.

6th Tract on John
John knew Jesus even before He came to be baptized of him in Jordan, as we perceive by the words I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest Thou to me? Behold, how he knew that He was the Lord, how he knew that He was the Son of God! How do we prove that he knew that He it was Who should baptize with the Holy Ghost? Before the Lord came to the river, when many betook themselves to John to be baptized of him, the Baptist said I indeed baptize you with water but One Mightier than I cometh; the latchet of Whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire. Luke iii. 16. Behold, John knew this also.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Yet John saith: I knew Him Now, how are we to explain this without calling John a liar? and God forbid that we should ever even think anything of the kind. Was it not that when the Dove descended on Christ, John then for the first time knew Him to have that peculiar attribute, that, whosoever should baptize with His Baptism, whether they were themselves just or unjust, the virtue of the Sacrament should proceed, not from them, but from Him on Whom abode the Dove; so that He is the real Baptizer in every Christian Baptism until the end of time, and it is in this sense that it is said of Him the Same is He Which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost Whether it be Peter, or Paul, or Judas, that performeth the ceremony, the real Baptizer and effectual Worker is Christ. For if the holiness of the baptism depended on the holiness of the particular officiator, no two baptisms would be exactly alike, and every one would be supposed to be more or less regenerated according as the minister who baptized him was more or less of a saint.

Some are holier than others, and some are better than others. Supposing then for the sake of argument that A is baptized by B, a righteous saint, and C is baptized by D who is less worthy in the sight of God, who hath attained only a lower degree in godliness, who is not so chaste, and whose life is not so good as B's, yet A and C receive just the same thing. And how is this, unless it be that it is Christ Himself Who is the effectual Baptizer?

On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy Confessor Hilary, Bishop of Poitiers, and Doctor of the Church, who passed away to heaven upon this present day.
January 14th 2026, the 25th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Nola, in Campania, the holy Priest Felix. Holy Paulinus, Bishop of the same city, writeth that after the persecutors had put Felix to the torture they committed him to prison, where they laid him in chains, upon shells and potsherds, but in the night an angel loosed him and led him forth. In after-times, when the persecution was over and he had turned many to Christ by his example and teaching, he fell asleep, famous for miracles, (about the year 256.)
In Judea, the holy Prophet Malachi, (415 B.C.)
Upon Mount Sinai, thirty-eight holy monks, who were massacred by the Saracens for Christ's faith's sake, (in the year 373.)
In the country of Rhaithia, in Egypt, forty-three holy monks who were massacred by the Blemmyes for the Christian religion's sake, (in the year 373.)
At Milan, (in the year 552,) the holy Confessor Datius, Bishop of that see, of whom blessed Pope Gregory maketh mention.
