2 Non sapete voi che i fedeli giudicheranno il mondo ? Or se il mondo sarà giudicato da voi, siete forse indegni di giudicare di cose di assai minor conto?
3 Non sapete che noi giudicheremo gli angeli? quanto più le cose del mondo?
4 Se dunque avrete liti di cose del mondo, stabilite per giudicarle quelli che occupano l'ultimo posto nella Chiesa.

Ilario, nato in Aquitania da nobile famiglia, si distinse per dottrina ed eloquenza. Legato dapprima in matrimonio, menò quasi vita monastica: poi per le singolari virtù venne creato vescovo di Poitiers: e si diportò così bene nella carica di vescovo. da meritare le più grandi lodi dai fedeli. Era l'epoca in cui l'imperatore Costante perseguitava i cattolici col terrore, la confisca dei beni ed ogni altra crudeltà, se non passavano dalla parte degli Ariani; Ilario essendosi opposto agli Ariani come un muro inespugnabile, attirò su di sé il loro furore. Quindi gli furono tese molte insidie, e finalmente per gli artifizi di Saturnino, vescovo d'Arles, venne relegato dal sinodo di Béziers nella Frigia: dove e risuscitò un morto, e scrisse contro gli Ariani dodici libri sulla Trinità.

Quattro anni dopo, radunato un concilio a Seleucia, città dell'Isauria, Ilario fu costretto ad assistervi: quindi partì per Costantinopoli, dove scorto l'estremo pericolo della fede, domandò, con tre pubblici memoriali, udienza all'imperatore, per disputare davanti a lui sulla fede cogli avversari. Ma Ursacio e Valente, vescovi Ariani, che Ilario aveva confutato nei suoi scritti, temendo la presenza d'uomo sì sapiente, persuasero Costante di ristabilirlo nel suo vescovado come per fargli onore. Fu allora che la chiesa della Gallia, secondo l'espressione di san Girolamo, abbracciò Ilario reduce dal combattimento contro gli eretici, seguito fino alla città episcopale da san Martino, che fu poi preposto al governo della chiesa di Tours; la santità del quale mostrò in seguito quanto profittasse delle lezioni d'un tanto maestro.

D'allora in poi governò la chiesa di Poitiers con gran tranquillità: e spinse la Gallia intera a condannare l'empietà degli Ariani. Scrisse molti libri d'una meravigliosa erudizione; e san Girolamo afferma a Leta di poterli leggere tutti senza nessuna tema di errore con quelle parole: I libri d'Ilario si possono leggere senza alcun pericolo. Egli se ne andò in cielo il 13 di Gennaio, sotto gl'imperatori Valentiniano e Valente, l'anno della nascita di Cristo 369.
Appellato da molti Padri e concilii Dottore insigne della Chiesa, e come tale onorato in alcune diocesi, finalmente ad istanza del sinodo di Bordeaux, Pio IX Pontefice massimo, con decreto della sacra Congregazione dei Riti, lo dichiarò e confermò Dottore della Chiesa universale, ordinando che il giorno della sua Festa si dicesse da tutti l'Ufficio e la Messa dei Dottori.

Voi siete il sale della terra. Se il sale diventa insipido, non è buono a nulla quello che si salerà. Ma io credo che non ci sia il sale della terra. In che modo quindi chiamò gli apostoli il sale della terra? Ma va cercata la proprietà delle cose dette, che sarà mostrata sia dal compito degli apostoli, sia dalla natura dello stesso sale. Il sale è in se come una cosa sola e contiene l'elemento dell'acqua e quello del fuoco, e questo di due è una cosa sola.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,
* e l'ha incoronato alle porte del paradiso.

Ma gli apostoli sono i predicatori delle cose celesti, e come i seminatori dell'eternità, conferenti l'immortalità a tutti i corpi sui quali sia stato cosparso il loro annuncio. Meritatamente quindi sono chiamati sale della terra, perché conservano i corpi per l'eternità a maniera di una salatura per virtù della dottrina.

Commemorazione: S. Felice Prete e Mart.
Felice prete di Nola, per avere inveito con forza contro il culto degli idoli, fu in diverse maniere perseguitato dagl'infedeli, poi gettato in prigione. Donde liberato di notte da un Angelo, ricevé l'ordine di cercare Massimiano vescovo di Nola il quale essendo carico di anni e temendo perciò di non poter sostenere i supplizi dei persecutori, s'era nascosto in una selva. Dove giunto Felice, condottovi da Dio, trovò il santo vescovo disteso per terra quasi morto; rianimatolo e caricatoselo sulle spalle, lo affidò, perché si rimettesse, alle cure d'una vedova cristiana. Ma riprendendo egli di nuovo l'empietà degli adoratori degli idoli, questi si precipitarono su di lui, ma egli fuggì e si nascose nello stretto spazio di due muraglie; la cui entrata essendosi subito ricoperta di ragnatele, nessuno poté sospettare che vi si fosse nascosto proprio allora. Donde poi uscito, Felice dimorò nascosto per tre mesi in casa d'una pia donna. E allorquando la Chiesa di Dio cominciò ad aver pace, ritornò a Nola, dove cogli esempi della vita, i suoi insegnamenti e miracoli convertì molti alla fede di Cristo, e, dopo aver ricusato costantemente il vescovado di quella città, si addormentò nel Signore, e fu sepolto presso Nola nel luogo detto il Pincio.

This Hilary was born of a noble family in Aquitaine, and is distinguished as a divine and an orator. He was married in his earlier life, but even then lived the life of a monk and on account of his remarkable holiness, was ultimately made Bishop of Poitiers, about the year 353, in which office he did his duty so as to gain the universal praise of the faithful. At that time the Emperor Constantius was persecuting the Catholics by threats, by the plundering of their goods, by exile, and at length, by every species of cruelty, in order to force them to yield to the Arian heresy. Against the Arians Hilary set himself up as a brazen wall, and turned upon himself the fierceness of their anger. They assailed him by many artifices, and at last Saturnine, Bishop of Arles, at the Council of Beziers, in 356, procured his banishment to Phrygia. During this exile he raised a dead man to life, and wrote a work in twelve books on the Trinity, against the Arians.

In the year 359, the fourth of his exile, took place the Council of Seleucia in Isauria, at which Hilary was obliged to be present, but afterwards withdrew to Constantinople. Here he realised more sharply the awful nature of this crisis in the history of Christianity, published three pamphlets in the form of letters to the Emperor, and demanded from that Prince leave to hold a public disputation in his presence. The Arian Bishops Ursacius and Valens, whom Hilary had already confuted in writing, were afraid to meet him in debate, and therefore induced Constantius, under pretence of pardon, to send him back to his Bishopric, in 360. His mother, the Church of Gaul, to use the language of Jerome, received him with open arms on his return from the battle with the heretics. He was followed to Poitiers by Martin, afterwards Bishop of Tours, whose after holiness was a fruit of his teaching.

Henceforth he ruled the Church of Poitiers in great peace. By his exertions the Church of Gaul was led to denounce the Arian blasphemy. His wonderful learning is seen in his numerous works, of which Jerome write to Laeta that he deemeth them quite faultless. One can follow Hilary in his books, saith he, without tripping once. He passed from earth to heaven upon the thirteenth day of January, in the year of our Lord 369, in the reign of the Emperors Valentinian and Valens.
He had already been called an illustrious Doctor of the Church, by many Fathers and Councils, and was so styled in the Liturgy in some Dioceses, when at length, in the year 1850, Pope Pius IX., at the prayer of the Synod of Bordeaux, and in accordance with a resolution of the Sacred Congregation of Rites, proclaimed and confirmed the title, and commanded that the Mass and Office of his Feast should be everywhere said as those of a Doctor.

Comment, on Matth. V
“Ye are the salt of the earth. But if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” There is, I take it, no such thing as salt of the earth. How, then, can the Apostles be called the salt of the earth? But the true meaning of these words will be made plain, when we consider the duty of Apostles, and the nature of salt itself. Now, salt is a compound of the elements of water and fire, out of the which two things in salt there is made one.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

San Pàolo, primo Eremita, Confessore, che fu trasportato fra le schiere dei beati il dieci del corrente mese.
Nel territorio d'Angers il beato Màuro Abate, discepolo di san Benedétto. Alla scuola di questi fu istruito dalla sua infanzia e dei suoi progressi notevoli ne fan fede i prodigi ch'egli compì sotto un tale maestro, soprattutto col camminare a piedi sopra le acque, cosa ammirabile e dopo Piétro quasi mai più avvenuta. Mandato poi dallo stesso Benedétto in Frància, quivi, avendo costruito un celebre monastero, che governò per quarant'anni, celebre per gloria di miracoli, si riposò in pace.
In Giudèa i santi Profeti Abacuc e Michéa, i cui corpi per divina rivelazione furono ritrovati sotto Teodósio il vecchio.
A Càgliari, in Sardégna, sant'Efisio Martire, il quale, nella persecuzione di Diocleziano, sotto il giudice Flaviàno, dopo aver superato per divina virtù molti tormenti, alla fine, decapitato, vincitore se ne volò al cielo.

Martyrology {anticipated}
January 15th 2026, the 26th day of the Moon,

On the morrow we keep the feast of holy Paul, the first hermit, who was borne to his place among the blessed upon the 10th day of this present month of January.

In the country of Angers, the blessed Maurus, (founder and) Abbot (of Glanfeuil,) a disciple of St. Benedict, by whom he was trained from his childhood, and made such headway that in obedience to him he walked upon water, a thing new and almost unheard of since the time of the Apostle Peter. Benedict sent him into Gaul, where he built a famous monastery, whereof he was Abbot for forty years, and fell asleep in peace, illustrious for miracles, (in the year 584.)
In Judea, the holy prophets Habakkuk and Michah, (606 years before Christ,) whose bodies were found by revelation from God in the time of the Emperor Theodosius the elder, (between the years of Our Lord 346 and 395.)
At Anagni, the holy Virgin and martyr Secundina, who suffered under the Emperor Decius.
At Cagliari, in Sardinia, the holy martyr Ephisius, who under the judge Flavian, in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian, was strengthened by God to overcome many torments, but in the end was beheaded, and so rose to heaven a conqueror.
At Nola, in Campania, (about the year 252,) holy Maximus, Bishop of that see.
In Auvergne, in Gaul, (in the year 710,) the holy Confessor Bonitus, Bishop of that see.
In Egypt, the holy Macarius, (in the year 391,) Abbot (of Scittir,) a disciple of blessed Anthony, and very famous for his life and miracles.
Likewise (in Egypt, in the year 391,) blessed Isidore, famous for the holiness of his life, his faith, and his miracles.
At Rome, holy John, called the hidden, who lived unknown to his kinsfolk for a while in a corner of his father's house, and then in a hut upon an island in the Tiber, where he was recognised at the time of his death, and famous for miracles, was buried in the same place, where afterward a church was built in his name, (in the year 450.)
