Marcello, Romano, resse il pontificato da Costanzo e Galerio fino a Massenzio. Per sua esortazione Lucina, matrona Romana, lasciò la Chiesa di Dio erede dei suoi beni. Essendo cresciuto in Roma il numero dei fedeli, egli istituì per loro utilità e per l'amministrazione del battesimo e della penitenza a quelli che abbracciavano la religione cristiana come anche per la sepoltura dei Martiri, dei nuovi Titoli, e divise la città in diversi distretti. Per tutte queste cose irritato Massenzio, minacciò crudeli supplizi a Marcello, s'egli non rinunziava al pontificato e non sacrificava agli idoli.

Ma disprezzando questi le insensate parole d'un uomo, venne rinchiuso in una scuderia perché vi avesse cura delle bestie, che vi si nutrivano a spese dei pubblico: Marcello vi passò nove mesi in continui digiuni e preghiere, visitando per mezzo di lettere le parrocchie che non poteva di persona. Tratto fuori di là da' chierici, ebbe ospitalità dalla beata Lucina, nella cui dimora dedicò una chiesa che oggi porta il titolo di san Marcello: nella quale andavano a pregare i Cristiani, e vi predicava lo stesso beato Marcello.

Avendo ciò risaputo Massenzio, ordinò di condurre in quella chiesa le bestie delle sue scuderie, e di farvele custodire da Marcello: il quale per il sudiciume del luogo e per le molte tribolazioni sofferte, ivi stesso si addormentò nel Signore. Il suo corpo venne sepolto dalla beata Lucina nel cimitero di Priscilla sulla via Salaria il 16 di Gennaio. Fu Papa per cinque anni, un mese e venticinque giorni. Scrisse una lettera ai vescovi della provincia di Antiochia sul primato della Chiesa Romana, che dimostra doversi chiamare capo delle chiese; nella quale si dice ancora nessun concilio potersi celebrare legittimamente senza l'autorità del Romano Pontefice. Ordinò nel mese di Dicembre venticinque preti, due diaconi e ventun vescovi per luoghi diversi.

Come ci riferisce la lettura evangelica. Gesù lui interrogò i discepoli che cosa pensassero di in mezzo a tanti pareri diversi. E san Pietro rispose: «Tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente». Allora il Signore gli disse: «Beato te, o Simone, figlio di Giona, perché questo non ti è stato rivelato dalla carne o dal sangue, ma dal Padre mio che sta nei cieli. Perciò io ti dico che tu sei Pietro e su questa pietra edificherò la mia Chiesa e le porte dell'inferno non prevarranno mai contro di essa. E a te darò le chiavi del regno dei cieli, e qualunque cosa avrai legata sulla terra, sarà legata anche nei cieli, e qualun que cosa avrai sciolta sulla terra, sarà sciolta anche nei cieli». L»ordine stabilito da Gesù Cristo rimane ancora; e san Pietro, che ha conservato fino ad oggi la solidità della pietra, non abbandonò mai il governo della Chiesa di cui fu incaricato.

Nella Chiesa intera, infatti, ogni giorno Pietro dice: «Tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente»; ed ogni lingua che riconosce il Signore viene istruita col magistero di tale voce. Tale fede sconfigge il diavolo e scioglie i legami di coloro che egli tiene prigionieri. Essa fa entrare nel cielo coloro che ha strappato alla terra e le porte dell'inferno non possono prevalere contro di essa. È stata infatti per potenza divina munita di una tale saldezza che mai la potrà corrompere la malvagità degli eretici né la potrà superare la perfidia dei pagani. Con tali disposizioni dunque, dilettissimi, e con razionale ossequio si celebri la festività odierna: affinché nell'umiltà della mia persona venga riconosciuto e onoralo colui, nel quale continua la cura che tutti i pastori hanno nella custodia delle pecore loro affidate e la cui dignità non viene meno per l'indegnità dell'erede.

Mentre dunque rivolgiamo le nostre esortazioni all'orecchio della vostra santità, pensate che vi parli colui, del quale facciamo le veci: sia perché vi esortiamo con lo stesso suo affetto, sia perché nient'altro predichiamo a voi se non quello che egli ha insegnato, scongiurandovi a vivere una vita casta e sobria e timorata di Dio, avendo cinto i fianchi del vostro spirito. Come dice l'Apostolo, siete mia gioia e mia corona, se la vostra fede, che dall'inizio del Vangelo è stata predicata in tutto il mondo, rimarrà nell'amore e nella santità. Infatti anche se è necessario che tutta la Chiesa, che è presente in tutta la terra, fiorisca di ogni virtù; tuttavia è conveniente che vi segnaliate tra gli altri popoli per i meriti della vostra pietà, perché voi, fondati sulla stessa roccia della pietra apostolica, siete stati redenti assieme agli altri dal Signore nostro Gesù Cristo, e siete stati istruiti più di tutti dal beato apostolo Pietro.

Reading 4
This Marcellus was a Roman, and held the supreme Pontificate from the year of our Lord 304, in the reign of Constantius and Galerius, till 310, in that of Maxentius. It was through his persuasion that the Roman lady Lucina left the whole of her property to the Church of God. As the believers increased, he instituted new titles in the City, which he divided after the manner of dioceses for their convenience, and for the baptism and penance of heathens converted to Christianity, and for the burial of the martyrs. These proceedings excited the wrath of Maxentius, who threatened Marcellus with the heaviest punishment, unless he would lay down the Popedom and sacrifice to idols.

℟. The Lord made him honourable, and defended him from his enemies, and kept him safe from those that lay in wait for him,

The servant of God treated with contempt the mad cries of this man, who accordingly took him and sent him to a menagerie, to take care of the beasts which were fed at the public cost. Marcellus remained at this place for nine months, which he spent in continual fasting and prayer, and, as he could not visit the parishes in person, he wrote letters to them. Some clerks rescued him, and the blessed Lucina hospitably received him into her house, in which he dedicated a Church, which is now called St. Marcellus'. Here the Christians met to pray, and the blessed Marcellus himself preached.

These proceedings came to the knowledge of Maxentius, who thereupon had the wild beasts brought from the menagerie and located in the church, where Marcellus was made to feed them. The noisomeness of the place and the filthiness of his occupation broke down a constitution already enfeebled by many ailments, and he fell asleep in the Lord. The blessed Lucina buried his body in the cemetery of Priscilla, on the Salarian Way, on the 16th of January. He sat on the throne of Peter for five years, one month, and twenty-five days. He wrote an epistle to the Bishops of the Patriarchate of Antioch on the primacy of the Roman Church, wherein he proveth the right of the same Church to be called the head of all the Churches. In this letter he likewise saith that no Council can be lawfully gathered together except by the authority of the Roman Pontiff. He ordained at Rome in the month of December twenty - five Priests, two Deacons, and twenty - one Bishops for diverse Sees.

When the Lord, as we read in the Gospel, asked his disciples who did men, amid their diverse speculations, believe him the Son of Man to be, blessed Peter answered and said: Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And the Lord answered and said unto him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father, which is in heaven: and I say also unto thee: That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it; and I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Niella Tebàide sant'Antonio Abate, il quale, padre di molti Monaci, visse celeberrimo per la vita e miracoli; le sue gesta furono descritte da sant'Atanasio in un celebre volume. Il suo sacro corpo però, sotto l'Imperatore Giustiniano, fu ritrovato per divina rivelazione, portato ad Alessandria e sepolto nella chiesa di san Giovanni Battista.

Martyrology {anticipated}
January 17th 2026, the 28th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

In the Thebaid, (in the year 356,) the holy Abbot Anthony, father of many monks, very illustrious for his life and miracles. Holy Athanasius hath chronicled his acts in a famous book. His sacred body was found by the revelation of God in the time of the Emperor Justinian and brought to Alexandria, where it is buried in the Church of St. John the Baptist.
At Langres, the holy triplets Speusippus, Eleusippus, and Meleusippus, who were crowned with martyrdom in the time of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, along with their grandmother Leonilla.
At Rome is commemorated the finding of the bodies of the holy martyrs Diodorus the Priest, Marian the Deacon, and their Companions, who were keeping the feasts of the martyrs in the Catacombs in the time of holy Pope Stephen, (in the year 257,) when the persecutors closed up the entrance of the Catacomb and buried it up, so that they also died as martyrs.
At Bourges, (in the year 644,) holy Sulpicius, Bishop of that see, surnamed the Pious, whose life and precious death are rendered famous by glorious miracles.
In the monastery of St. Andrew at Rome, (in the sixth century,) the blessed monks Anthony, Merulus, and John, of whom writeth holy Pope Gregory.
