Antonio, Egiziano, nato da genitori nobili e cristiani, dei quali rimase orfano adolescente, entrando in chiesa ed avendo udito quelle parole del Vangelo: «Se vuoi essere perfetto, va e vendi quanto hai, e dallo ai poveri» Matth. 19,21; come se fossero rivolte a se stesso, credé dover subito ubbidire a Cristo Signore. Venduto pertanto ogni suo avere, ne distribuì tutto il danaro ai poveri. Sciolto da questi impedimenti, intraprese a menare sulla terra un genere di vita celeste. Ma siccome discendeva nell'arena ad un pericoloso combattimento, stimò dover aggiungere allo scudo della fede ond'era armato, il sussidio delle altre virtù; e si accese di tanto ardore per acquistarle, che si sforzava d'imitare chiunque gli sembrasse eccellere in qualche virtù.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

Nessuno pertanto fu più continente di lui, nessuno più vigilante. Nella pazienza, nella dolcezza, nella misericordia, nell'umiltà, nel lavoro, nello studio delle divine Scritture superava tutti. Aveva tale orrore d'incontrarsi e di parlare cogli eretici e scismatici, specie se Ariani, che diceva non doversi neppure avvicinarli. Dormiva per terra quando ve lo costringeva un necessario sonno. Amò così il digiuno, che non mangiava prima del tramonto del sole, e non spegneva la sete che coll'acqua; né si rifocillava con alcun cibo o bevanda prima del tramonto del sole, e spesso anche si asteneva dal cibo per due giorni; spessissimo passava la notte in preghiera. Antonio, divenuto così un vero soldato di Dio, il nemico del genere umano assalì il santissimo giovane con varie tentazioni, ch'egli vinse col digiuno e coll'orazione, Ma nonostante le sue numerose vittorie su satana, Antonio non si credeva sicuro, perché conosceva le innumerevoli arti di nuocere del diavolo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,
* e l'ha incoronato alle porte del paradiso.

Perciò si ritirò in una vastissima solitudine dell'Egitto dove progredendo ogni giorno nella cristiana perfezione, giunse a disprezzare talmente i demoni (i cui assalti erano tanto più violenti quanto più Antonio diveniva forte a resistere) fino a rimproverarli della loro debolezza; e sovente eccitando i suoi discepoli a combattere contro il diavolo, e insegnando loro con quali armi poter vincere: Credete a me, Fratelli, diceva, satana teme le pie veglie, le preghiere, i digiuni, la povertà volontaria, la misericordia e l'umiltà, massimamente poi l'amore ardente a Cristo Signore, al cui solo segno della santissima croce fugge spossata. Egli poi divenne sì formidabile ai demoni, che molti posseduti da essi nell'Egitto, invocato il nome di Antonio erano subito liberati: ed era tanta la fama della sua santità, che Costantino Magno e i suoi figli si raccomandavano per lettera alle sue preghiere. Giunto infine all'età di centocinque anni, avendo già innumerevoli imitatori del genere di vita ch'egli aveva istituito, radunati i suoi monaci e date loro istruzioni sulla regola perfetta della vita cristiana, illustre per santità e miracoli se ne andò in cielo, il 17 di Febbraio.

Omelia sui Vangeli.
La lettura del santo Vangelo, fratelli carissimi, è chiara. Ma affinché, per la sua stessa semplicità, non sembri a qualcuno troppo elevata, esaminiamola brevemente in modo che la sua esposizione sia chiara per quelli che la ignorano, senza essere gravosa per quelli che la conoscono. Il Signore dice: «Siano cinti i vostri fianchi». Noi cingiamo i fianchi, quando freniamo con la continenza i movimenti della carne. Ma poiché è poco astenersi dal male, se ciascuno non si applica ancora, e con assidui sforzi, a fare il bene, subito si aggiunge: «e le lucerne siano accese nelle vostre mani». Noi teniamo in mano le lucerne accese, quando diamo al nostro prossimo con le buone opere esempi che lo illuminano. A proposito di tali opere il Signore dice: «La vostra luce risplenda davanti agli uomini, affinché essi vedano le vostre opere buone e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli».
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:

Sono due quindi le cose che vengono comandate: cingere i fianchi e tenere le lucerne: cioè la castità deve risplendere nel nostro corpo e la luce della verità nelle nostre opere. Infatti l'una cosa senza l'altra non può assolutamente essere gradita al nostro Redentore; né colui che compie opere buone, finché non abbandoni le sozzure della lussuria, né colui che eccelle per la sua castità ma non si esercita nelle opere buone. Né la castità dunque è una grande virtù senza le opere buone, né le opere buone possono valere qualcosa senza la castità. Ma anche se si osservano i due comandamenti, rimane il dovere, per chiunque si tratti, di tendere con la speranza alla patria superna e di non star lontano in alcun modo dai vizi soltanto per l'onore di questo mondo.

«E voi siate come coloro che aspettano il loro padrone quando torni dalle nozze, per aprirgli subito appena giungerà e picchierà alla porta». Il Signore in verità viene quando si affretta al giudizio; picchia poi quando, con gli affanni della malattia, ci avverte che ormai la morte è vicina. Noi gli apriamo subito, se lo riceviamo con amore. Non vuole infatti aprire al giudice che picchia, colui che ha paura di uscire dal corpo e ha timore di vedere questo giudice, che ricorda di aver disprezzato. Ma chi è tranquillo per la sua speranza e per il suo modo di agire, apre subito a chi picchia, perché accoglie con gioia il giudice; e, quando è vicino il tempo della morte, egli si rallegra pensando ad una gloriosa retribuzione.

Anthony was an Egyptian, the child of noble and Christian parents, whom he lost while yet very young. On one occasion he entered a Church, and heard these words of the Gospel, Matth. xix. 21, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor. He took these words as if they were addressed to himself personally, for this was the obedience which he thought every word of the Lord Christ should meet with. He therefore sold his whole possessions, and gave the price to the poor. Being thus delivered from worldly entanglements, he set himself to lead on earth the life of an angel. Finding himself, as it were, about to enter the field of battle against Satan, he thought it wisest to add to the shield of faith, which he already possessed, all the rest of the armour of God, wherefore he observed all those who were eminent for any grace, and strove to copy them.

He was excelled by none in watchfulness and self-restraint. He surpassed all in long-suffering, meekness, tenderness, lowliness, perseverance, and continual study of the Holy Scriptures. He had such a loathing of the company and conversation of heretics and schismatics, especially Arians, that he used to say that a faithful Christian ought as far as possible never to come near any such. He took the sleep which was needful for the body lying on the ground. Such was his devotion to fasting, that he took nothing with his bread but salt, and drank only water; he never ate or drank before sunset; he often abstained from food altogether for two days at a time; and very often passed whole nights in prayer. Being so valiant a soldier of God, Anthony was attacked by the devil with diverse temptations, but he overcame them all by prayer and fasting. Nevertheless, these frequent triumphs over Satan did not lull Anthony into security, for he was well aware of the numberless arts of assault possessed by the evil one.

Then he betook himself into the vast deserts of Africa that lie near Egypt. Day by day he advanced on the path to perfection. Day by day the attacks of the fiends became more violent, but day by day his' strength grew greater to strive against them. At length he came to mock at the powerlessness of the devils, against whom he stirred up his disciples to fight, teaching them with what arms to combat. Believe me, my brethren, he used to say, Satan is afraid of good men's watchings, and prayers, and fasts, and voluntary poverty, and mercifulness, and lowliness, but above all, of their warm love for Christ our Lord, the mere sign of Whose most holy Cross is enough to undo him and put him to flight. He became such an object of dread to the devils, that many persons throughout Egypt who were tormented by them, were delivered by calling on his name moreover the fame of his holiness was so spread abroad, that Constantine the Great and his sons wrote to him to commend themselves to his prayers. In the hundred and fifth year of his age, and the fulness of his reputation for piety and miracles, having roused up great numbers to follow his example, he gathered his monks around him, and when he had exhorted them to strive after Christian perfection, he passed to heaven on the 17th day of January, in the year of our Lord 356.

Dearly beloved brethren, the words of the Holy Gospel, which have just been read, lie open before you, and, lest their very plainness should make them seem to some to be hard, we will go through them with such shortness as that neither may they which understand not remain unenlightened, nor they which understand be wearied. The Lord saith Let your loins be girded about. Now, we gird our loins about, when by continency we master the lustful inclination of the flesh. But, forasmuch as it sufficeth not for a man to abstain from evil deeds, if he strive not to join thereto the earnest doing of good works, it is immediately added And your lights burning. Our lights burn when, by good works, we give bright example to our neighbour; concerning which works the Lord saith Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Which is in heaven. Matth. v. 16.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.
