Mentre assiduamente ascolto la lettura delle Lettere del beato Paolo, lettura che si fa sovente due, tre e quattro volte ogni settimana, ogni volta che celebriamo le memorie dei santi Martiri, esulto per la contentezza, godendo di questa tromba spirituale, e mi sento eccitato e infiammato d'ardore nel riconoscere una voce a me sì cara, e mi sembra quasi di vederlo presente e di sentirlo parlare. Ma d'altra parte mi rincresce e mal sopporto che non tutti conoscano quest'uomo come si conviene: anzi molti lo ignorano talmente da non conoscere esattamente neppure il numero delle sue Lettere. Ora ciò proviene non da incapacità, ma dal non voler avere assiduamente tra le mani gli scritti di questo sant'uomo.

Trattato 9 sopra Giovanni, dopo il principio
Il Signore, invitato, coll'andare alle nozze, anche prescindendo dal significato mistico, volle confermare che egli stesso ha fatto le nozze. Perché più tardi, degli uomini di cui parla l'Apostolo, dovevano proibire di sposarsi, dicendo esser cosa cattiva le nozze, e che le aveva fatte il diavolo: mentre vediamo nel Vangelo che lo stesso Signore, interrogato se sia lecito all'uomo di ripudiare la moglie per qualunque causa, rispose non esser lecito, eccetto il caso d'infedeltà. Nella quale risposta, se lo ricordate, disse questo «L'uomo non divida quel che Dio ha congiunto» Marc. 10, 9.

Si, in caso d'infedeltà, è lecito rimandare la moglie: perché essa stessa per la prima ha rinunziato ad essere moglie col non conservare verso il marito la fedeltà coniugale. Quelle stesse che votano a Dio la verginità, benché abbiano nella Chiesa un grado più elevato di onore e di santità, non sono senza nozze: perché anch'esse partecipano con tutta la Chiesa a quelle nozze, nelle quali lo sposo è Cristo.

And as I recognize the voice of a friend, I am roused, and enkindled with love so that I almost seem to see him present, and to hear him speaking. But nevertheless I am grieved, and am troubled, that all do not know this great man as he deserves to be known. Indeed, many are so ignorant that they do not even know how many epistles he wrote. But this ignorance is not due to a want of intelligence on their part, but because they will not carefully study the writings of this great man.

A Roma, sulla via Cornélia, i santi Martiri Màrio e Marta coniugi, e i figli Audiface e Abacum, nobili persiani, i quali, al tempo del Principe Claudio, erano venuti a Roma per pregare. Di essi Marta, dopo aver sopportato i flagelli, l'eculeo, il fuoco, gli uncini di ferro e il taglio delle mani, fu uccisa a Ninfa; gli altri furono decapitati e i loro corpi bruciati.
Così pure san Canuto, Re e Martire.
A Smirne il natale del beato Germànico Martire, il quale, rifulgendo per la bellezza della giovanile età, sotto Marco Antonino e Lucio Aurélio, condannato dal giudice, ma con la grazia della divina virtù, allontanando da sé il timore dell'umana fragilità, provocò spontaneamente la fiera preparatagli; e così triturato dai suoi denti, meritò di essere incorporato al vero pane, a Gesù Cristo nostro Signore, morendo per lui.
Nell'Africa i santi Martiri Pàolo, Gerónzio, Gennaro, Saturnino, Succèsso, Giulio, Cato, Pia e Germana.
Presso Spoléto la passione di san Ponziàno Martire, il quale, al tempo dell'Imperatore Antonino, dal giudice Fabiano, dopo essere stato con verghe fortissimamente battuto per Cristo, fu obbligato a camminare a piedi nudi sopra la brage, dalla quale però rimase incolume; fu quindi steso sull'eculeo e lacerato con uncini di ferro, e così chiuso in prigione, dove meritò di essere confortato dalla visita di un Angelo; esposto poi ai leoni e versatogli addosso piombo liquefatto, finalmente fu ucciso con la spada.
A Lodi, nella Lombardia, san Bassiano, Vescovo e Confessore, che combattè valorosamente contro gli eretici insieme a sant'Ambrógio.

Martyrology {anticipated}
January 19th 2026, the 30th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Worcester, in England, (in the year 1095,) the holy Confessor Wolstan, Bishop of that see, famous for his worthy and wondrous works, whose name was enrolled among those of the saints by Innocent III.
At Rome, (in the year 270,) upon the Cornelian Way, the holy martyrs Maris, and Martha, his wife, and their sons Audifax and Abachum. These were noble Persians, who came to Rome for prayer's sake in the time of the Emperor Claudius. They were cudgelled, racked, burnt, torn with iron hooks, and had their hands cut off. At length Martha was drowned and the others beheaded, and their bodies cast into the fire.
At Smyrna, in the time of the Emperors Marcus Antoninus and Lucius Aurelius, the blessed martyr Germanicus. He was a very beautiful youth, but by the power of God's grace he laid aside all the weakness of bodily fear, and of his own accord provoked the beast by which he had been condemned by the judge to be killed and so being ground through its teeth, and so dying for the Lord Jesus Christ, he earned to be made one body with Him who is Himself the very Bread which came down from heaven.
In Africa, the holy martyrs Paul, Gerontius, Januarius, Saturninus, Successus, Julius, Catus, Pia, and Germana, (and others to the number in all of 600.)
At Spoleto, in the time of the Emperor Antonine, the holy martyr Pontian. Fabian, the judge, caused him to be first most grievously beaten with rods and then to walk barefoot upon live coals by these he was unhurt, and was therefore racked, lacerated with iron hooks, and cast into prison, where he was comforted by a visitation of angels. Lastly he was thrown to the lions, had molten lead poured over him, and was then beheaded.
At Lodi, (about the year 413,) the holy Confessor Bassian, Bishop of that see, who fought manfully along with holy Ambrose against the heretics.
