Sed quid dignum ea loqui póssumus, cujus ne nomen quidem vácuum laudis est? Devótio supra ætátem, virtus supra natúram: ut mihi videátur non hóminis habuísse nomen, sed oráculum Mártyris, quod indicávit, quid esset futúra. Nomen Vírginis títulus est pudóris. Appellábo Mártyrem: prædicávi satis. Prolíxa laudátio est, quæ non quǽritur, sed tenétur. Nemo est laudabílior, quam qui ab ómnibus laudári potest. Libro I dopo il principio
Quest'oggi è il natale d'una Vergine, imitiamone la purezza. E il natale d'una Martire, immoliamo delle vittime. È il natale di sant'Agnese, ammirino gli uomini, non disperino i piccoli, stupiscano le maritate, l'imitino le nubili. Ma che possiamo dire degno di lei, il cui nome stesso non è privo di lode? La sua consacrazione è superiore all'età, la sua virtù superiore alla natura: così che il suo nome mi sembra non esserle venuto da scelta umana, ma esserne predizione del Martirio, un annunzio di ciò ch'ella doveva essere. Il nome stesso di questa Vergine indica purezza. La chiamerò Martire: ho detto abbastanza. E già lode abbondante quella che non si cerca, ma si possiede. Nessuno è più lodevole di colui che può essere lodato da tutti., Questa Martire ha tanti araldi per lodarla, quanti sono gli uomini che pronunziano il suo nome.

Si narra che avesse tredici anni allorché soffrì il martirio. La crudeltà fu tanto più detestabile in quanto che non si risparmiò neppure sì tenera età; o piuttosto fu grande la potenza della fede, che trova testimonianza anche in siffatta età. C'era forse posto a ferita in quel corpicciuolo? Ma ella che non aveva dove ricevere il ferro, ebbe di che vincere il ferro. Eccola intrepida fra le mani sanguinarie dei carnefici, eccola immobile fra gli strappi violenti di catene stridenti, eccola offrire tutto il suo corpo alla spada del furibondo soldato, ancora ignara di ciò che sia morire, ma pronta, s'è trascinata invita agli altari idolatri, a tendere, tra le fiamme, le mani a Cristo, e a formare sullo stesso rogo sacrilego il segno ch'è il trofeo del vittorioso Signore: eccola passare il collo e le mani tra i ferri (che sono presentati). Ma nessuna catena può stringere membra sì tenere. Nuovo genere di martirio! Non è ancora atta al supplizio, ed è già matura per la vittoria; ella può appena combattere, ed è capace di ottenere la corona ella aveva contro di sé il pregiudizio della (sua) età, ed era maestra nella virtù.

Non così sollecita va a nozze una sposa, come questa Vergine, lieta della sua sorte, affrettò il passo al luogo del supplizio. Mentre tutti piangevano, lei sola non piangeva. Molti si meravigliavano che con tanta facilità donasse prodiga, come se già fosse morta, una vita che non aveva ancora gustata. Erano tutti stupiti che già rendesse testimonianza alla divinità lei che per l'età non poteva ancora disporre di sé. Quante minacce non impiegò il carnefice per intimidirla, quante carezze per persuaderla, quante domande la sollecitarono per sposa! Ma ella: E’ fare ingiuria allo Sposo, diceva, desiderare di piacere ad altri. Mi avrà chi primo m'ha scelta perché tardi, o carnefice? Perisca questo corpo che può essere bramato da occhi che non voglio. Si presentò, pregò, piegò la testa. Avresti visto il carnefice vacillare, quasi fosse lui il condannato, tremargli la destra, impallidirsegli la faccia per pericolo altrui, mentre la fanciulla non temeva per il proprio. Ecco pertanto in una sola vittima un doppio martirio, di purezza e di religione. Ed ella rimase vergine, e ottenne il martirio.

Spesso vi raccomando, fratelli carissimi, di fuggire le opere cattive e di evitare la corruzione di questo mondo, ma quest'oggi la lettura del santo Vangelo mi costringe a dirvi di stare molto attenti a non perdere il merito delle vostre buone opere, a non cercare, nel bene che fate, il favore o la stima degli uomini, ad impedire
che si insinui in voi il desiderio della lode e ad agire in modo che, quanto appare di fuori, non sia dentro vuoto di ricompensa. Il Redentore infatti ci parla di dieci vergini, e le dice tutte vergini; eppure non tutte hanno meritato di essere ammesse al soggiorno della beatitudine, perché alcune di esse, mentre cercavano una gloria esteriore della loro verginità, non si curarono di mettere dell'olio nelle loro lampade.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

Ma prima dobbiamo chiederci che cosa sia il regno dei cieli, o perché lo si paragoni a dieci vergini, ed anche quali vengano dette vergini prudenti e quali vergini stolte. Mentre infatti è certo che nessun reprobo entrerà nel regno dei cieli, perché questo viene paragonato anche a delle vergini stolte? Dobbiamo sapere che spesso nel linguaggio sacro la Chiesa del tempo presente viene chiamata regno dei cieli. Onde altrove il Signore dice: «Il Figlio dell'uomo manderà i suoi angeli, e toglieranno dal suo regno tutti gli scandali». Certamente in quel regno di beatitudine, dove c'è la suprema pace, non si potranno trovare scandali da togliere.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Onnipotente, adorabile, venerando e tremendo io ti benedico,

Ciascuno vive in un corpo che ha cinque sensi; il numero cinque poi, raddoppiato, dà dieci. E, poiché la moltitudine dei fedeli comprende ambedue i sessi, la santa Chiesa si dice simile a dieci vergini. E poiché in essa i cattivi si trovano mescolati coi buoni e i reprobi con gli eletti, giustamente viene paragonata a delle vergini prudenti ed anche a delle vergini stolte. Infatti ci sono molti che vivono nella continenza, che si guardano dagli appetiti esteriori, e dalla speranza sono portati ai beni interiori, che mortificano la propria carne, e anelano alla patria celeste con tutta la forza del loro desiderio, agognano i premi eterni, e non vogliono ricevere lodi umane per le loro fatiche. Questi certamente non ripongono la loro gloria nelle parole degli uomini, ma la nascondono nella loro coscienza. E ci sono poi molti che affliggono il loro corpo con l'astinenza, ma per questa stessa loro astinenza cercano gli applausi degli uomini.

This is a virgin's birthday; let us then follow the example of her chastity. It is a Martyr's birthday; let us then offer sacrifices. It is the birthday of the holy Agnes; let men then be filled with wonder, little ones with hope, married women with awe, and the unmarried with emulation. But how shall I set forth the glory of her whose very name is an utterance of praise? It seemeth to me that this being, holy beyond her years, and strong beyond human nature, received the name of Agnes, not as an earthly designation, but as a revelation from God of what she was to be. For this name Agnes is from the Greek, and being interpreted, signifieth Pure. So that this saintly maiden is known by the very title of Chastity and when I have added thereto the word Martyr, I have said enough. She needeth not the praise which we could utter, but do not. None is more praiseworthy than she for whose praise all mouths are fitted. As many as name her, so many praise her, by the noble title of martyr.

Reading 5
We learn by tradition that this holy martyr testified in the thirteenth year of her age. We will pass by the foul cruelty which did not spare her tender years, to contemplate the great power of her faith, whereby she overcame the weakness of childhood, and witnessed a good confession. Her little body was hardly big enough to give play to the instruments of their cruelty, but if they could scarce sheathe their swords in her slight frame, they found in her that which laughed the power of the sword to scorn. She had no fear when she found herself grasped by the bloody hands of the executioners. She was unmoved when they dragged her with clanging chains. Hardly entered on life, she stood fully prepared to die. She quailed not when the weapons of the angry soldiery were pointed at her breast. If they forced her against her will to approach the altars of devils, she could stretch forth her hands to Christ amid the very flames which consumed the idolatrous offerings, and mark on the heathen shrine the victorious Cross of the Lord. She was ready to submit her neck and hands to the iron shackles, but they were too big to clasp her slender limbs. Behold a strange martyr! She is not grown of stature to fight the battle, but she is ripe for the triumph; too weak to run in the race, and yet clearly entitled to the prize; unable from her age to be aught but a learner, she is found a teacher.

She went to the place of execution a virgin, with more willing and joyful footsteps than she would have gone with to the nuptial chamber as a bride. The spectators were all in tears, and she alone did not weep. They beheld her with wonder, laying down that life of which she had hardly begun to taste the sweets, as freely as though she had drained it to the dregs and was weary of its burden. All men were amazed when they saw her whose years had not made her her own mistress, arise as a witness for the Deity. Consider how many threats her murderer used to excite her fears, how many arguments to shake her resolution, how many promises to bribe her to accept his offers of marriage. But she answered him It is an insult to Him Whom I have wedded to expect me to comply. He That first chose me, His will I be. Headsman, why waitest thou? Perish the body which draweth the admiration of eyes from which I would turn away. She stood, prayed, and then bent her neck for the stroke. Now mightest thou have seen the murderer trembling as though he himself were the criminal, the executioner's hand shake, and the faces of them that stood by turn white at the sight of her position, and all the while herself remain without fear. This one victim brought God a double offering, that of her purity, and that of her faith. She preserved virginity and achieved martyrdom.

Dearly beloved brethren oftentimes do I warn you to fly corrupt conversation, and to keep yourselves unspotted from the world. But the portion which is this day read from the Holy Gospel doth oblige me to say that even to these good things which ye do, ye must needs take all careful heed. Look ye well to it, that, when ye work righteousness, ye do it not as seeking the praise and admiration of men, for if the lust of praise do once creep in, that which seemeth so fair without, loseth its reward within. Behold how the Redeemer speaketh of these ten virgins. He calleth them all virgins, yet entered not all of them into the door of blessedness, for there were some of them who sought outwardly the honour of virginity, but would take no oil within their vessels with their lamps.

The body of every man doth consist of five senses, and five being doubled, is ten. A Valènza, nella Spagna Tarragonése, san Vincénzo, Levita e Martire, il quale sotto l'empissimo Preside Baciano, avendo sofferto prigione, fame, eculeo, storcimento di membra, lastre ardenti, graticola di ferro infuocata ed altri generi di tormenti, se ne volò al cielo a ricevere il premio del martirio. Il nobile trionfo della sua passione fu molto bene descritto in versi da Prudénzio e celebrato con somme lodi dal beato Agostino e da san Leone Papa.
Presso Betsàloe, nell'Assiria, sant'Anastasio, Monaco Persiano, il quale, dopo molti tormenti di prigione, battiture e catene, sofferti in Cesarèa di Palestina, afflitto con molte pene da Cósroe, re di Pèrsia, infine fu decollato, avendo prima mandati innanzi nel martirio settanta Compagni sommersi nel fiume. Martyrology {anticipated}
January 22nd 2026, the 3rd day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Valentia, in Spain, the holy Levite and martyr Vincent. Under the wicked Prefect Dacian he suffered imprisonment, starvation, racking, twisting of his limbs, red-hot plates, and bed of red-hot iron, and other kinds of torments, and passed away to heaven to receive there a martyr's reward, (in the year 304.) The glorious triumph of his passion hath been set forth by Prudentius in noble poetry, and the blessed Augustine and the holy Pope Leo have praised him in the highest language.
In Persia, the holy monk Anastasius, who, after enduring many torments of imprisonment, stripes, and bonds at Caesarea, in Palestine, suffered much again under Chosroes, King of the Persians, and was at length beheaded, when he had sent before him seventy companions who suffered martyrdom by drowning, (in the year 628.) His head and his venerable image were afterwards brought to Rome, and the acts of the Second Council of Nicea bear witness that at the sight of them devils fly and diseases are healed.
℣. And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors, and holy virgins.

Dio onnipotente ed eterno, che scegli le cose deboli del mondo per confondere tutte le forti: concedi benigno, che, come celebriamo la solennità della tua beata Vergine e Martire Agnese, così ne sperimentiamo il patrocinio presso di te.
Per il nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, tuo Figlio, che è Dio, e vive e regna con te, in unità con lo Spirito Santo, per tutti i secoli dei secoli.
