Lettura 4
Vincenzo, nato a Huesca nella Spagna citeriore, si dedicò allo studio fin dall'infanzia, e fu istruito nelle sacre lettere da Valerio vescovo di Saragozza dal quale ebbe poi anche l'incarico di predicare il Vangelo non potendo il vescovo, per un impedimento di lingua, soddisfare da sé al dovere della predicazione. Ciò essendo stato riferito a Daciano, che Diocleziano e Massimiamo avevano fatto governatore della provincia, Vincenzo è preso a Saragozza ed è condotto incatenato a Daciano a Valenza. Là è battuto con verghe e torturato sul cavalletto alla presenza di molti, ma né la violenza dei tormenti né la durezza o dolcezza delle parole avendo potuto rimuoverlo dal suo proposito, dopo essere stato disteso sopra una graticola posta su carboni ardenti, scarnificato con uncini di ferro e bruciato con lastre infuocate, è ricondotto nella prigione seminata di cocci rotti, affinché il suo corpo nudo, oppresso dal sonno, fosse tormentato anche da questi rottami aguzzi sottoposti.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. I tuoi santi, o Signore, hanno seguito una via meravigliosa e, osservando i tuoi precetti, sono rimasti illesi in mezzo all'infuriare delle acque;

Ma mentr'egli stava rinchiuso nell'oscura prigione, ecco una vivissima luce illuminare tutta la prigione; luce che riempì di somma ammirazione tutti i3 presenti, sì che il custode della prigione ne riferì a Daciano. Il quale, fattolo uscire, lo fece mettere sopra d'un soffice letto; sforzandosi così di sedurre colle delizie colui che non aveva potuto ridurre al suo volere coi supplizi. Ma l'animo invitto di Vincenzo, fortificato dalla fede e speranza in Gesù Cristo, vinse ogni cosa; e dopo aver superata il fuoco, il ferro e la crudeltà dei carnefici, se ne volò vittorioso alla celeste corona del martirio il 22 di Gennaio. Il suo corpo essendo stato gettato via e rimasto insepolto, un corvo lo difese miracolosamente cogli artigli, col becco e colle ali dagli uccelli e da un lupo. Il che risaputo da Daciano, ordinò che venisse sommerso in alto mare; ma anche da questo rigettato miracolosamente sulla riva, fu seppellito dai Cristiani.

Anastasio, monaco Persiano, dopo aver visitato sotto L'imperatore Eraclio la terra santa di Gerusalemme, soffrì coraggiosamente a Cesarea di Palestina per la religione di Cristo catene e battiture. Poi i Persiani lo sottoposero per lo stesso motivo a vari supplizi, e infine il re Cosroa gli fe' troncare la testa insieme con altri settanta Cristiani. Le sue reliquie furono portate prima a Gerusalemme, nel monastero in cui aveva professato la vita monastica, e poi a Roma, nel monastero delle Tre Fontane.

Omelia 35 sui Vangeli.
Il Signore e Redentore nostro annunzia i mali che precederanno la fine del mondo affinché, quando essi verranno, tanto meno perturbino quanto più saranno stati conosciuti prima. Infatti le frecce che sì prevedono feriscono meno; e i mali del mondo ci sembrano più tollerabili quando la previsione ci premunisce contro di essi, come uno scudo. Ecco dunque quello che dice: «Quando sentirete parlare di guerre e sommosse, non vi spaventate; bisogna che prima avvengano queste cose, ma la fine non verrà subito dopo». È necessario ponderare le parole del nostro Redentore, con le quali egli ci annunzia che dobbiamo patire sia all'esterno che all'interno. Le guerre infatti vengono fatte dai nemici, le sommosse dai cittadini. Per indicarci dunque che saremo turbati all'esterno e all'interno, ci dice che altro avremo a soffrire dai nemici e altro dai fratelli.

Però, dopo che si è parlato di tanti segni di perturbazione, è necessario prenderli brevemente in considerazione ad uno ad uno. Perché sta scritto che noi ne subiamo alcuni dal cielo, altri dalla terra, altri dagli elementi, altri dagli uomini. Dice infatti: «Si solleverà popolo contro popolo»: ecco lo scompiglio degli uomini; «vi saranno in diversi luoghi grandi terremoti»: ecco l'ira che verrà dall'alto; «vi saranno pestilenze»: ecco la perturbazione nei corpi; «vi saranno fame e carestia»: ecco la sterilità della terra; «e fenomeni spaventosi dal cielo e tempeste»: ecco l'instabilità dell'atmosfera. Poiché dunque tutto deve essere distrutto, prima della distruzione tutto sarà sconvolto; e noi, che in tutto abbiamo peccato, in ogni cosa saremo puniti, perché si avveri quanto è stato detto: «E con lui combatterà l'universo contro gli insensati».

Reading 4
Vincent was born at Huesca in Aragon in Spain. He was early turned to study, and learned sacred letters from Valerius, Bishop of Saragossa. He was accustomed to deliver discourses for this Prelate, who, owing to an impediment in his speech, was not able to preach himself. This coming to the ears of Dacian, Prefect of the province under Diocletian and Maximian, he caused Vincent to be arrested at Saragossa, and brought before him at Valencia in bonds. The saint was scourged, and afterwards tormented on the rack, in presence of numerous spectators, but neither torture, threats, nor fair words could bend his resolution. He was then laid on a grating over hot coals, his flesh mangled with iron hooks, and white-hot plates of metal applied to the wounds. The still breathing remains were taken back to a prison, and laid on broken potsherds, that the agony of his naked body might prevent his sleeping from exhaustion.

As he lay in his dark cell, a glorious light suddenly filled the prison, to the astonishment of all who saw it. The gaoler informed Dacian, who caused the martyr to be brought out and cared for in a soft bed, hoping that though he had failed to move him by cruelty, he might seduce him by pretended kindness. But the indomitable soul of Vincent, armed with faith and hope in Christ Jesus, remained unconquered even to the end, and triumphing over the fire, the steel, and the cruelty of the tormentors, passed away to receive the victorious crown of martyrdom in heaven, on the 22nd day of January, in the year of our Lord 304. His body was thrown out unburied. A raven perched upon it and kept off with his beak, claws, and wings both the other birds and a wolf, which came to prey on it. Dacian then had it thrown into the sea, but by the will of God it was washed up again, and the Christians took and buried it.

Anastasius was a Persian monk who made a pilgrimage to the Holy Places at Jerusalem in the reign of the Emperor Heraclius, during which journey he endured bonds and stripes on account of his confession of Christ at Banias, then called Cassarea, in Palestine. Soon after his return, he was arrested by the Persians for the same cause, and, after enduring diverse torments, he and seventy other Christians were beheaded by order of King Chosroes. He testified upon the 22nd day of January in the year of our Lord 628. His reliques were first carried to Jerusalem, to the monastery in which he had made his monastic profession, and afterwards to Rome, where they were laid in the monastery of Saints Vincent and Anastasius.

Our Lord and Redeemer willeth us to know what shall be the signs that the end of the world is at hand, to the end that ye may be the less terrified, when that cometh whereof ye have already had warning. Darts strike less which are seen coming: and the plagues of the earth will be to us more bearable, if we are harnessed against them with the shield of foreknowledge. Behold, how He saith When ye shall hear of wars and commotions be not terrified for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by. It behoveth us to ponder these words of our Redeemer, wherein He warneth us of suffering, from without, and from within. Wars are the work of a foreign enemy, commotions of the citizens. Therefore, that He may let us know that we shall be troubled from within and from without, He showeth that our wrestling shall be in part against strangers, and in part against our brethren.

On the morrow we keep the feast of the Espousal of the Blessed Virgin Mary to holy Joseph.
The holy Confessor Raymond of Penafort, of the Order of Friars Preachers, famous for his holiness and teaching, of whom mention has been made upon the 7th day of this present month of January.
January 23rd 2026, the 4th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Rome, the holy Virgin and martyr Emerentiana, who while as yet she was making her ready to be baptized, was stoned to death by the Gentiles while she was praying at the grave of her holy foster-sister Agnes.
At Philippi, in Macedonia, holy Parmenas, one of the first seven Deacons. He yielded himself wholly to the grace of God, discharged in the fulness of faith the office of preaching which had been laid upon him by the brethren, and obtained the glory of martyrdom under the Emperor Trajan.
At Caesarea, in Morocco, of the holy martyrs Severian and Aquila, his wife, who were burnt.
At Antinoe, in Egypt, (in the fourth century,) the holy martyr Aselas, who after suffering diverse torments was cast into the Nile, and rendered up his precious soul to God.
At Ancyra, in Galatia, (in the fourth century,) holy Clement, Bishop of that see, who had often been put to the torture, but at length achieved martyrdom in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian.
