Il beato Raimondo, nato a Barcellona dalla nobile famiglia di Pennafort, ed istruito negli elementi della religione cristiana, ancor fanciullo fece presagire qualche cosa di grande per le rare qualità di anima e di corpo. Infatti giovanetto ancora insegnò in patria umanità, poi andò a Bologna, dove, datosi con ardore ai doveri della pietà e allo studio del diritto canonico e civile e conseguita la laurea dottorale, spiegò i sacri canoni con grande ammirazione di tutti. Crescendo sempre più la fama delle sue virtù, Berengario vescovo di Barcellona, ritornando da Roma alla sua chiesa, passò per Bologna collo scopo di vederlo, e ottenne infine a forza di preghiere che ritornasse con lui in patria. Insignito bentosto del canonicato e della prepositura della chiesa medesima, rifulse a tutto il clero e popolo per integrità, modestia, dottrina e dolcezza di modi, e accrebbe sempre con tutte le forze l'onore e il culto della Vergine Madre di Dio, che venerava con pietà e affetto singolare.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano

Lettura 5
A circa quarantacinque anni di età, fatta professione nell'ordine dei frati Predicatori, qual nuovo soldato si esercitò in ogni genere di virtù, ma soprattutto nella carità verso gl'indigenti, e principalmente verso gli schiavi tenuti dagl'infedeli. Dietro sua esortazione avendo san Pietro Nolasco (di cui egli ascoltava le confessioni) consacrato i suoi beni a quest'opera di pietà, la beatissima Vergine apparve tanto a lui che al beato Raimondo e a Giacomo I re di Aragona, dicendo che farebbero cosa gratissima e a sé e al suo Figlio, se istituissero in suo onore un ordine di religiosi, che avesse la cura di liberare gli schiavi dalla tirannia degl'infedeli. Quindi, dopo aver conferito tra loro, fondarono l'ordine di santa Maria della mercede per la redenzione degli schiavi: per il quale il beato Raimondo stabilì certe regole di vita assai adatte alla vocazione dello stesso ordine, impetrandone, alquanti anni dopo, l'approvazione da Gregorio IX, e creando primo maestro generale dell'ordine il detto san Pietro, cui egli stesso colle proprie mani aveva dato l'abito.

Lettura 6
Chiamato a Roma dallo stesso Gregorio, e scelto per suo cappellano, penitenziere e confessore, per ordine suo egli radunò nel volume delle Decretali i decreti dei Romani Pontefici sparsi negli atti di vari concili e di diverse lettere. Ricusò sempre con fermezza l'arcivescovado di Tarragona offertogli dallo stesso Pontefice, e si dimise spontaneamente da maestro generale dell'ordine dei Predicatori che aveva governato santissimamente per due anni. Egli determinò Giacomo re d'Aragona a stabilire nei suoi stati il santo uffizio dell'Inquisizione. Fece molti miracoli, fra i quali il più celebre fu che ritornando dall'isola di Maiorca delle Baleari a Barcellona, disteso il mantello sulle acque, fece cento sessanta miglia di cammino in sei ore ed entrò nel suo cenobio a porte chiuse. Da ultimo quasi centenario, ricolmo di virtù e di meriti, si addormentò nel Signore, nell'anno della salute 1275. Clemente VIII l'inserì nel numero dei Santi.

Omelia di s. Gregorio papa
Omelia sui Vangeli.
La lettura del santo Vangelo, fratelli carissimi, è chiara. Ma affinché, per la sua stessa semplicità, non sembri a qualcuno troppo elevata, esaminiamola brevemente in modo che la sua esposizione sia chiara per quelli che la ignorano, senza essere gravosa per quelli che la conoscono. Il Signore dice: «Siano cinti i vostri fianchi». Noi cingiamo i fianchi, quando freniamo con la continenza i movimenti della carne. Ma poiché è poco astenersi dal male, se ciascuno non si applica ancora, e con assidui sforzi, a fare il bene, subito si aggiunge: «e le lucerne siano accese nelle vostre mani». Noi teniamo in mano le lucerne accese, quando diamo al nostro prossimo con le buone opere esempi che lo illuminano. A proposito di tali opere il Signore dice: «La vostra luce risplenda davanti agli uomini, affinché essi vedano le vostre opere buone e glorifichino il Padre vostro che è nei cieli».
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e ha lodato il Signore con tutto il suo cuore:
* egli interceda per i peccati di tutti gli uomini.

Sono due quindi le cose che vengono comandate: cingere i fianchi e tenere le lucerne: cioè la castità deve risplendere nel nostro corpo e la luce della verità nelle nostre opere. Infatti l'una cosa senza l'altra non può assolutamente essere gradita al nostro Redentore; né colui che compie opere buone, finché non abbandoni le sozzure della lussuria, né colui che eccelle per la sua castità ma non si esercita nelle opere buone. Né la castità dunque è una grande virtù senza le opere buone, né le opere buone possono valere qualcosa senza la castità. Ma anche se si osservano i due comandamenti, rimane il dovere, per chiunque si tratti, di tendere con la speranza alla patria superna e di non star lontano in alcun modo dai vizi soltanto per l'onore di questo mondo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Emerenziana, vergine Romana, sorella di latte della beata Agnese, ancora catecumena ma ardente di fede e di carità, per aver rimproverato con veemenza agli adoratori degl'idoli le violenze che commettevano contro i Cristiani, venne lapidata da una moltitudine ammutinata. Pregando in mezzo alle sofferenze, ella fu battezzata nel proprio sangue, che sparse coraggiosamente per Cristo, e rese l'anima a Dio presso la tomba di Sant'Agnese.

Reading 4
The blessed Raymond was born at Barcelona, in the year of our Lord 1175, and was of the noble family of the De Penafuerte. He was early instructed in the Christian religion, and even while he was still a little child, he showed such excellence of mind and body, as filled his friends with strong hopes of his future greatness. As a young man he taught letters in his native place. He afterwards went to Bologna, where he applied himself to works of godliness, and to the study of the Ecclesiastical and Civil Law. He took the degree of Doctor, and lectured with great applause upon the Canon Law. He attained so much celebrity that Berengar, Bishop of Barcelona, on his way from Rome to his own See, turned aside to visit the Saint at Bologna, and at length persuaded him after many entreaties to return with him to Spain. He was appointed to a Canonry and the Archdeaconry in the Church of Barcelona, in which offices he set both clergy and people a brilliant example of uprightness, modesty, learning, and meekness, and more especially strove, as far as in him lay, to increase the honour and reverence paid to the Virgin Mother of God, whom he venerated with an affection singularly devoted.

When he was about forty-five years of age he solemnly professed in the Order of Friars Preachers, and strove, as a new recruit, to perfect himself in all the duties of his calling, particularly in charity to the poor, and above all to those unhappy Christians who were slaves to the unbelievers. He was the Confessor of St. Peter Nolasco and of James I., King of Aragon, and by his advice St Peter Nolasco gave up his whole worldly possessions to ransom as many as possible of the wretched captives. At this moment the Most Blessed Virgin appeared simultaneously to St. Raymond, St. Peter Nolasco, and King James, and revealed to them the pleasure of her Only-begotten Son and herself, that they should establish in her honour an order of Religious persons whose work should be the redemption of Christian slaves from bondage among unbelievers. The three took counsel together, and then founded the Order of the Blessed Mary of Ransom, for the Redemption of Captives. The blessed Raymond himself composed a most appropriate code of rules for the new institution, for which he after some years obtained the express sanction of Pope Gregory IX., and himself on the ioth day of August, in the year 1223, with his own hands clothed St. Peter Nolasco in the habit, and constituted him the first Master General of the Order.

He was summoned to Rome by Gregory IX., in the year 1230, and appointed by him his Chaplain, Penitentiary, and Confessor, and by his orders collected into one volume of the Decretals the ordinances of the Roman Pontiffs, which up to that time were only to be found scattered among the records of diverse Councils and Churches. He firmly refused the Archbishopric of Tarascon, which was offered him by the Pope himself, and, having been chosen Master General of the whole order of Friars Preachers, he discharged the duties of that office in holiness for two years, and then resigned it. It was by his advice that James, King of Aragon, established the Office of the Holy Inquisition in his dominions. He was distinguished by many miracles, of which the chief which is narrated of him is that on one occasion being in the island of Majorca and wishing to go to Barcelona, he spread his cloak upon the sea, and passed over the waters on it, accomplishing the whole distance of sixty leagues in six hours, and finally entering his convent through the closed doors. He attained the age of nearly an hundred years, and fell asleep in the Lord (on the 6th day of January,) in the year of salvation 1275. His name was enrolled by Clement VIII. among those of the Saints.

Dearly beloved brethren, the words of the Holy Gospel, which have just been read, lie open before you, and, lest their very plainness should make them seem to some to be hard, we will go through them with such shortness as that neither may they which understand not remain unenlightened, nor they which understand be wearied. The Lord saith Let your loins be girded about. Now, we gird our loins about, when by continency we master the lustful inclination of the flesh. But, forasmuch as it sufficeth not for a man to abstain from evil deeds, if he strive not to join thereto the earnest doing of good works, it is immediately added And your lights burning. Our lights burn when, by good works, we give bright example to our neighbour; concerning which works the Lord saith Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Which is in heaven. Matth. v. 16.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Martirologio {anticipated}
Anno del Signore 2026, 24 Gennaio, Luna 5

Presso Efeso san Timòteo, discepolo del beato Pàolo Apostolo, e dal medesimo ordinato Vescovo di Efeso. Ivi, dopo molti combattimenti sostenuti per Cristo, mentre rimproverava quelli che sacrificavano a Diana, fu sopraffatto con sassate, e poco dopo si addormentò nel Signore.
Ad Antiòchia san Bàbila Vescovo, il quale, nella persecuzione di Décio, dopo avere spesso glorificato Dio con i suoi patimenti e strazi, finì la vita gloriosa fra le catene, con le quali ancora ordinò che fosse seppellito il suo corpo. Con lui si dice che abbiano pure subito il martirio tre fanciulli, vale a dire. Urbano, Prilidiàno ed Epolónio, che egli aveva ammaestrati nella fede di Cristo.
A Foligno, nell'Umbria, san Feliciàno, il quale, ordinato Vescovo della medesima città dal Papa san Vittóre primo, ivi, dopo molte fatiche, nell'estrema vecchiezza, sotto l'Imperatore Décio, fu coronato col martirio.
A Neocesaréa, nella Mauritania, i santi Martiri Mardónio, Musónio, Eugénio e Metéllo, i quali tutti furono dati al fuoco, e le loro reliquie vennero disperse nel fiume.

Martyrology {anticipated}
January 24th 2026, the 5th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

Holy Timothy, the disciple of the blessed Apostle Paul, by whom he was ordained Bishop of Ephesus. After many contendings for Christ, because he rebuked them that were offering sacrifice to Diana, they stoned him, and a short while thereafter he fell asleep in the Lord, (in the year 97.)
At Antioch, (in the year 250,) holy Babilas, Patriarch of that city. After he had oftentimes glorified God by the sufferings and torments which he bore, and in the persecution under the Emperor Decius, he ended his glorious life in iron fetters, which he commanded should be buried with him. It is recorded also that there suffered with him three children Urban, Prilidian, and Epolonius whom he had instructed in the faith of Christ.
At Neo-Caesarea, the holy martyrs Mardonius, Musonius, Eugenius, and Metellus, these all were burnt and their ashes thrown into the river.
At Foligno, holy Felician, who was ordained by Pope Victor Bishop of that city, and after many labours was crowned with martyrdom in extreme old age, in the persecution under the Emperor Decius.
Likewise the holy martyrs Thyrsus, (third century,) and Projectus, (Bishop of Clermont, in the year 674.)
At Bologna, (in the third century,) holy Zama, the first Bishop of that city, who was ordained by the holy Roman Pontiff Denis, and there wonderfully spread the Christian faith.
Likewise (in the sixth century,) the blessed Abbot Suran, who flourished in holiness in the time of the Lombards.
℣. And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors, and holy virgins.

79:17 Things set on fire and dug down * shall perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.
79:18 Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand: * and upon the son of man whom thou hast confirmed for thyself.

79:20 O Lord God of hosts, convert us: * and shew thy face, and we shall be saved.

Psalm 81 [3]
81:1 God hath stood in the congregation of gods: * and being in the midst of them he judgeth gods.
81:2 How long will you judge unjustly: * and accept the persons of the wicked?
81:3 Judge for the needy and fatherless: * do justice to the humble and the poor.
81:4 Rescue the poor; * and deliver the needy out of the hand of the sinner.
81:5 They have not known nor understood: they walk on in darkness: * all the foundations of the earth shall be moved.
81:6 I have said: You are gods * and all of you the sons of the most High.
81:7 But you like men shall die: * and shall fall like one of the princes.
81:8 Arise, O God, judge thou the earth: * for thou shalt inherit among all the nations.
