Timoteo, nato a Listri nella Licaonia da padre Gentile e da madre Giudea, praticava già la religione cristiana, quando l'Apostolo Paolo andò in quel paese. Questi mosso dalla grande fama di santità di Timoteo, se lo prese per compagno de' suoi viaggi: però lo circoncise per riguardo dei Giudei, che si erano convertiti a Cristo, i quali sapevano che il padre dl Timoteo era Gentile. Giunti dunque tutti due ad Efeso, l'Apostolo l'ordinò vescovo, affinché governasse quella chiesa.

Sermone di s. Agostino vescovo
44 sui Santi.
Noi oggi celebriamo l'anniversario del trionfo del santo martire Timoteo; e la Chiesa, mentre si rallegra della sua glorificazione, ci propone di seguirne le orme. Infatti sé soffriremo insieme con lui, insieme con lui saremo pure glorificati. Nel suo glorioso combattimento noi dobbiamo considerare principalmente due cose: cioè la spietata crudeltà del carnefice, e la invitta pazienza del martire: la crudeltà del carnefice per detestarla, la pazienza del martire per imitarla. Dice infatti il Salmista, condannando la malvagità: «Non imitare i malvagi, poiché essi ben presto si disseccheranno come il fieno». Così poi l'Apostolo esorta ad aver pazienza verso i malvagi : «La pazienza vi è necessaria perché possiate conseguire quanto vi fu promesso».

Se consideriamo, fratelli carissimi, quali e quanti beni ci vengono promessi in cielo, stimiamo spregevoli quelli che abbiamo sulla terra. Poiché la sostanza terrena, paragonata all'eterna felicità, è un peso, non un aiuto. La vita temporale, paragonata alla vita eterna, merita piuttosto il nome di morte che di vita. Infatti lo stesso quotidiano decadere del corpo che altro è se non una lenta morte? Ma quale lingua può ridire, quale intelletto comprendere quanto sia il gaudio della patria superna : essere associati ai cori degli angeli, contemplare con questi beatissimi spiriti la gloria del Creatore, vedere Dio faccia a faccia, contemplare la luce indefettibile, non essere più turbato da alcun timore di morte, godere una felicità inalterabile, infinita?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Ma l'animo si infiamma al sentire queste cose, e già desidera ardentemente stare là dove spera di godere senza fine. Ma non si può giungere a grandi premi se non attraverso grandi fatiche. Di conseguenza anche Paolo, grande predicatore, dice: «Non sarà coronato, se non colui che avrà combattuto secondo le regole». La grandezza delle ricompense dunque allieti il nostro spirito, ma non lo spaventi il travaglio del combattimento. Per questo la Verità dice a quelli che si accostano a lei: «Se uno viene a me e non odia suo padre e sua madre e la moglie e i figli e i fratelli e le sorelle, e perfino la sua vita, non può essere mio discepolo».

Ma ci si deve chiedere come mai ci venga comandato di odiare i genitori e gli altri congiunti, mentre poi ci è prescritto di amare anche i nemici. E certo la Verità a proposito della moglie dice: «Quel che Dio ha unito, l'uomo non divida». E Paolo dice: «Uomini, amate le vostre mogli come anche Cristo ama la Chiesa». Ecco, il discepolo predica che bisogna amare la moglie, mentre il Maestro dice: «Chi non odia la moglie, non può essere mio discepolo». Forse che il giudice prescrive una cosa e il banditore ne annuncia un'altra? Oppure possiamo odiare e amare nel medesimo tempo? Però se valutiamo la forza del precetto, siamo in grado di fare l'una cosa e l'altra operando un giusto discernimento: amare cioè la moglie e quelli che ci sono uniti per parentela e che riconosciamo come prossimo: e ignorarli, quasi odiandoli e fuggendoli, qualora ci fossero di impaccio nel percorrere la via voluta da Dio.

Reading 4
Timothy was a native of Lystra in Lycaonia, born of a Gentile father and a Jewish mother. He embraced the Christian religion when the Apostle Paul came into those parts. The holy Apostle was so struck with the fame of Timothy's sanctity, that he chose him to be the companion of his journeys, and caused him to be circumcised, in order to remove a stumbling-block from the way of those Jews who felt drawn to Christianity. When they came together to Ephesus, the Apostle consecrated him Bishop of that Church.

Two of the Apostle Paul's Epistles are addressed to this Saint, of which one was written from Laodicea, and the other from Rome. These sacred writings so stirred him up to the zealous discharge of his duties as a spiritual shepherd, that he strove to prevent the people of Ephesus from sacrificing to Artemis on her feastday, knowing that sacrifice is due to God alone. The heathens thereupon stoned him till he was well-nigh dead, and although he was rescued by the Christians, and carried to a mountain near the city, he then fell asleep in the Lord, on the 24th day of January.

In his glorious battle we have two things chiefly to consider the hardened cruelty of the tormentor, and the unconquered patience of the Martyr the cruelty of the tormentor, that we may abhor it; the patience of the Martyr, that we may imitate it. Dearly beloved brethren, if we consider what and how great things are promised unto us in heaven, all things which are upon earth grow poor to our mind. For when this world's goods are reckoned against the gladness above, they are found to be a clog rather than an help. This present life being compared to life eternal, ought rather to be called death than life. For what is the daily failing of our corruption but, as it were, a creeping death But what tongue is there that can tell, or what understanding that can comprehend how great is the rejoicing in the city above, where they have part with the choirs of Angels, where they stand with the most blessed spirits before the glory of the Creator, where they see the face of God present, where they behold the Incomprehensible Light, where they have no fear of death, and where they rejoice eternally incorruptible

Conversione di san Pàolo Apostolo, avvenuta nel secondo anno dòpo l'Ascensione del Signore.
Presso Damasco il natale di sant'Anania, che fu discepolo del Signore e battezzò lo stesso Apostolo Pàolo. Avendo predicato il Vangelo a Damasco, ad Eleuterópoli ed altrove, finalmente compì il martirio sotto il Giudice Licinio, dopo essere stato battuto e straziato con nervi ed infine lapidato.
Ad Auvergne, in Frància, i santi Preiètto Vescovo ed Amarino Abate di Cloroang, martirizzati dai capi di quella città.

On the morrow we commemorate the conversion of the holy Apostle Paul, which took place in the second year after our Lord's ascension.
