Causa, propter quam scribit Apóstolus ad Gálatas, hæc est: ut intélligant grátiam Dei id secum ágere, ut sub lege jam non sint. Cum enim prædicáta eis esset Evangélii grátia, non defuérunt quidam ex circumcisióne, quamvis Christiáni nómine, nondum tamen tenéntes ipsum gratiæ benefícium, et adhuc voléntes esse sub onéribus legis, quæ Dóminus Deus imposúerat non justítiæ serviéntibus, sed peccáto, justam scílicet legem injústis homínibus dando ad demonstranda peccáta eórum, non auferenda. Prefazione, tomo 4
La causa per cui l'Apostolo scrive ai Galati è questa: far comprendere che effetto della grazia di Dio si è che non siano più sotto il giogo della legge. Quando fu loro annunziata la grazia del Vangelo, ci furono alcuni Giudei, i quali, sebbene Cristiani di nome, ma che non apprezzavano ancora pienamente il beneficio della grazia, volevano rimanere ancora soggetti alle prescrizioni onerose della legge, che il Signore Dio aveva imposto non a dei servi della giustizia, ma a degli schiavi del peccato, dando cioè una legge giusta ad uomini ingiusti, non per purificarli dei loro peccati, ma per farli loro conoscere. Perché solo la grazia della fede, che opera mediante la carità, cancella i peccati.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Sebbene i Galati fossero già stabiliti sotto il giogo di questa grazia, quelli volevano ricondurli sotto il giogo della legge, affermando che nulla sarebbe loro giovato il Vangelo, se non venivano circoncisi, e se non adottavano le altre osservanze esteriori del rito Giudaico. E quindi avevano cominciato a ritenere sospetto l'Apostolo Paolo, che aveva loro predicato il Vangelo, come uno che non seguiva la stessa regola degli altri Apostoli, che obbligavano i Gentili a praticare i riti giudaici.

Di simile questione si tratta pure nella Lettera ai Romani: tuttavia pare che ci sia una qualche diversità, perché in quella scioglie le contestazioni e compone le dissensioni sorte fra i Cristiani venuti dal Giudaismo e quelli ch'erano venuti dal Gentilesimo; pretendendo i primi che il Vangelo era stato loro annunziato in ricompensa dei meriti delle opere che avevano fatto sotto la legge, e che agli incirconcisi, non meritando questa ricompensa, non si doveva dare; mentre questi pretendevano d'esser preferiti ai Giudei siccome uccisori del Signore. Ma in questa lettera scrive a quelli ch'erano già stati turbati dall'autorità dei Giudaizzanti, che li spingevano alle osservanze legali.

Discendendo il Signore dal monte, gli si fanno incontro le turbe, perché non avevano potuto salire in alto. E primo gli si fa innanzi un lebbroso: ché, a motivo della lebbra, non aveva potuto ancora udire sul monte il gran discorso del Salvatore. Ed è da notare, ch' egli è il primo guarito in particolare: secondo il servo del centurione: terzo la suocera di Pietro colpita da febbre in Cafarnao: in quarto luogo, gl'indemoniati che gli furono presentati: e dai quali con una parola scacciò gli spiriti, in questa circostanza quando guarì ancora tutti gli altri malati.

Quand'ecco un lebbroso si accosta e gli si prostra innanzi dicendo» Matth. 8, 2. Rettamente dopo la predicazione e l'istruzione si offre l'occasione d'un miracolo, affinché per l'autorità del miracolo sia confermato uditori il discorso tenuto dianzi. «Signore, se vuoi, puoi mondarmi» Matth. 8, 2. Chi prega di volere, non dubita del potere. «E Gesù, stesa la mano, lo toccò dicendo: Lo voglio, sii mondato» Matth. 8, 3. Nello stendere il Signore la mano, subito andò via la lebbra. E insieme osserva, che risposta umile e senza iattanza. Quello aveva detto: «Se vuoi»: il Signore risponde: «Lo voglio». Quello aveva premesso: «Puoi mondarmi»; il Signore soggiunge e dice: «Sii mondato». Non dunque, come credono molti Latini, si deve congiungere e leggere: «Voglio che sii mondato»; ma separatamente, così che dica prima; «Lo voglio»; poi ordini: «Sii mondato ».

Per più ragioni lo manda dal sacerdote: primo, per umiltà, per mostrare ch'egli rendeva deferente onore ai sacerdoti. Difatti la legge prescriveva, che quelli ch'erano mondati dalla lebbra, facessero offerta ai sacerdoti. Poi, affinché, vedendo il lebbroso mondato, essi o credessero al Salvatore o non ci credessero se credessero, si salvassero; se non ci credessero, fossero inescusabili. E anche perché, come l'accusavano spessissimo, non sembrasse che violasse la legge.

The reason of the Apostle's writing to the Galatians was this that they might understand that the grace of God had worked in them that they were no longer under the law. For when the grace of the Gospel was preached to them, there had not been wanting to them some of them of the circumcision, Christians indeed in name, but who had not yet apprehended that great benefit of grace, and desiring still to be bound with burdens of the law burdens which the Lord God had laid, not upon such as serve righteousness, but upon such as serve sin, laying, that is to say, upon the unrighteous a righteous law, whereby their unrighteousness was made manifest, not taken away. For there is not anything which taketh away sin, save only the grace of faith which worketh by love.

The men of the circumcision would have the Galatians, who were under grace, to be under the burdens of the law, persuading them that the Gospel profited them nothing, unless they should be circumcised, and take on them the other outward observances of the Jews' religion. Whence the Galatians began to have doubts of the Apostle Paul, by whom the Gospel had been preached to them, as one that held not the doctrine of the other Apostles, who compelled the Gentiles to come under the law.

When the Lord was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him. They were not able to follow Him when He went up. And first there came a leper. This poor creature's disease had prevented him from hearing the Saviour's long sermon on the Mount. Let it be noted that he is the first person specially named as being healed. The second was the Centurion's servant; the third was Peter's wife's mother, who was sick of a fever at Capernaum; the fourth were they who were brought unto Christ as being troubled with evil spirits, from whom He by His word cast out the evil spirits, at the same time that He healed all that were sick.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

Let us remark how lowly and unbragging is the Lord's language. The leper had said, If Thou wilt; the Lord answereth, I will. The leper, Thou canst make me clean; the Lord, Be thou clean. Most Latin readers, misled by the identity of form in that language between the Present Infinitive Active and the Second Person Singular Present Imperative Passive of the Verb, read Christ's answer as if it were, I will to make thee clean. This is wrong. The sentences are separate. First cometh the expression of volition, I will, then the command, Be thou clean.

San Policarpo, Vescovo di Smirne e Martire, che conseguì la corona del martirio il ventitre di Febbraio.
Ad Ippòna, nell'Africa, i santi Teógene Vescovo ed altri trentasei, i quali, nella persecuzione di Valeriàno, disprezzando la morte temporale, conseguirono la corona dell'eterna vita.
Presso Betlèmme di Giuda il transito di santa Paola Vedova, la quale, essendo di nobilissima stirpe di Senatori, nel rinunziare, insieme con la beata Vergine di Cristo Eustóchio sua figlia, alle cose del secolo, distribuì le sue sostanze ai poveri, e si ritirò presso il Presepio del Signore; ed ivi, ricca di molte virtù e coronata con lungo martirio, passò al regno celeste. La sua vita straordinariamente virtuosa fu scritta da san Girolamo.

Martyrology {anticipated}
January 26th 2026, the 7th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Smyrna, holy Polycarp, a disciple of the blessed Apostle John, and by him ordained Bishop of that city, having the charge of all Asia. In the reign of Mark Antony, and Lucius Aurelius Commodus, as the Pro-consul was sitting in the amphitheatre all the people cried out against Polycarp, and to please them he was cast into the fire, but forasmuch as it burned him not he was pierced with the sword, and so received the crown of martyrdom, (in the year 166.) With him there suffered also twelve others that were come from Philadelphia unto the city aforesaid.
At Hippo, in Africa, the holy martyrs Theogenes, Bishop of that city, and thirty-six others, who in the persecution under the Emperor Valerian reckoned cheaply death here in time, and received the crown of life eternal, (about the year 260.)
At Bethlehem of Judah, the holy widow Paula, mother of Eustochium, the virgin of Christ. She was of a very noble senatorial family, that gave up the world and distributed all her goods to feed the poor and betook herself to the manger of the Lord, and thence passed away into the kingdom of heaven endowed with many graces and crowned with a long martyrdom, (in the year 404.) Jerome hath written of her life, full of graces.
In the country of Paris, (in the year 685,) holy Bathildes, Queen (of France,) illustrious for her holiness and the glory of her miracles.
