Il Signore aveva minacciato l'uomo di punirlo di morte se avesse peccato: l'aveva sì dotato del libero arbitrio, ma tenendolo soggetto al suo comando, ed eccitando in lui il timore della sua rovina: e lo collocò in un paradiso di delizie, che non era che l'ombra d'una vita migliore, dove sarebbe giunto se avesse conservato la giustizia. Esiliato egli (dall'Eden) dopo il suo peccato, incatenò alla pena della morte e della riprovazione tutti i suoi discendenti, corrotti nella sua persona, come in radice: così che tutta la razza, che doveva discendere da lui e dalla sua sposa condannata come lui, e che l'aveva indotto al peccato, contrasse la colpa originale, e meritò d'essere trascinata in mezzo a errori e dolori d'ogni specie, sino al supplizio senza fine cogli angeli infedeli, suoi corruttori, padroni e compagni della sua infelice sorte.

Perché si devono considerare come una conseguenza della giusta collera di Dio i disordini cui sono portati i peccatori dall'attrattiva d'una concupiscenza cieca e sfrenata, come pure i mali visibili e invisibili che soffrono loro malgrado: tuttavia la bontà del Creatore non cessò di manifestarsi sia verso i cattivi angeli, conservando loro la vita e la potenza sempre attiva (senza la quale cesserebbero d'essere), come verso gli uomini propagandone la razza, benché nati da ceppo viziato e condannato, formandone i corpi che anima, disponendone le membra che armonizza colle diverse età, mantenendone la vivacità dei sensi secondo la disposizione degli organi e fornendolo di alimenti. Egli giudicò meglio tirar il bene dal male piuttosto che non permettere che avvenisse alcun male.

Il regno dei cieli è detto simile ad un padrone di casa che cerca degli operai per coltivare la sua vigna. Ora nel padrone di. casa chi è rappresentato più giustamente del nostro Creatore, il quale governa quelli che ha creati, e domina nel mondo i suoi eletti come un padrone i dipendenti della propria casa? Egli possiede una vigna, cioè la Chiesa universale, che dal giusto Abele sino all'ultimo eletto che nascerà alla fine del mondo, ha prodotto tanti Santi quasi quanti sono i tralci che ha gettato.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Ora il Signore Dio aveva piantato sin da principio un paradiso di delizie:

We hear that the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning, to hire labourers into his vineyard. Who indeed is more justly to be likened to an householder than our Maker, Who is the Head of the household of faith, bearing rule over them whom He hath made, and being Master of His chosen ones in the world, as a Master over those that are in his house? He it is That hath the Church for a vineyard, a vineyard that ceaseth not to bring forth branches of the True Vine, from righteous Abel to the last of the elect that shall be born in the world.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. And the Lord God had planted a garden aforetime in Eden,
* And there He put the man whom He had formed.
℣. And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden.

A Cesarèa, in Palestina, san Cornèlio Centurione, battezzato dal beato Piétro Apostolo, e da lui innalzato all'onore dell'Episcopato in quella città.
A Roma, sulla via Salaria, la passione di sant'Aproniàno, Cancelliere, il quale, ancora pagano, traendo di prigione san Sisinio per presentarlo al Prefetto Laodicio, e sentendosi dire dal cielo « Venite, benedetti dal Padre mio, prendete possesso del regno, che a voi è stato preparato if n dal principio del mondo », credette e fu battezzato, e poi con sentenza capitale finì la vita nella confessione del Signore.
Così pure a Roma i santi Martiri Fortunato, Feliciàno, Fermo e Càndido.
Ad Orléans, in Frància, san Flóscolo Vescovo.
A Canterbury, in Inghiltérra, il natale di san Lorénzo Vescovo, che governò quella Chiesa dopo sant'Agostino, e converti alla fede lo stesso Re.

The morrow is the feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which by the Greeks is called the Hypapante that is, the Presentation of the Lord.

At Rome, upon the Salarian Way, (in the fourth century,) the holy martyr Apronian. He was a notary, who, while he was a Gentile, was leading the holy Licinius out of prison to present him before the Prefect Laodicius, when he heard a voice from heaven saying, "Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom which is prepared for you from the foundation of the world," whereupon he believed, and was baptized, and was afterwards put to death confessing the Lord.
