Sermone 13 sul Tempo, dopo il principio
Cosi fu già predetto: La madre Sion dice: «Ogni uomo è nato in essa; ed egli stesso l'ha fondata, l'Altissimo» Sal 86,3. O onnipotenza di un bambino nascente! o magnificenza d'un Dio che dal cielo discende sulla terra! Era ancora nel seno materno, e Giovanni Battista già lo salutava dal seno di sua madre. Era presentato nel tempio, e veniva riconosciuto da Simeone vecchio famoso, annoso, sperimentato, coronato (di meriti). Allora egli lo conobbe, allora l'adorò, allora disse: «Adesso lascia, Signore, che il tuo servo se ne vada in pace: poiché i miei occhi han visto la tua salvezza» Lc 2,29.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Simeone, giusto e timorato aspettava la redenzione d'Israele,
* E lo Spirito Santo era in lui.

Gli era differito d'andarsene dal mondo, affinché vedesse nato colui che ha fatto il mondo. Il vegliardo riconobbe il Bambino, e si fece bambino col Bambino. Ripieno com'era di pietà, si vide rinnovato nell'età. Il vecchio Simeone portava Cristo bambino, Cristo sosteneva la vecchiezza di Simeone. Gli era stato detto dal Signore, che non proverebbe la morte prima di vedere nato il Cristo del Signore. Nacque il Cristo, e si compì il desiderio del vegliardo nella vecchiezza del mondo. Perché trovò il mondo invecchiato (nel peccato), egli venne ad un uomo vecchio.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Era stato rivelato a Simeone dallo Spirito Santo, che non vedrebbe la morte, prima di vedere il Cristo del Signore:

In fine, perché sappiate che questa era la sua gioia, conchiuse dicendo: «Adesso lascia che il tuo servo se ne vada in pace: poiché i miei occhi han visto la tua salvezza» Lc. 2,29. I profeti avevano cantato che il Fattore del cielo e della terra avrebbe abitato in terra cogli uomini; un Angelo annunziò che il Creatore della carne e dello spirito avrebbe preso un corpo; Giovanni dal seno della madre salutò il Salvatore nel seno materno; il vegliardo Simeone riconobbe per Dio questo bambino.

Libri 2 Comm. al cap. 2 di Luca, dopo il principio.
C'era allora in Gerusalemme un uomo di nome Simeone, per sona giusta e timorata, che aspettava la consolazione d'Israele» Lc. 2,25. Non solo gli Angeli, e i profeti, e i pastori, ma anche i vecchi e i giusti rendono testimonianza alla nascita del Signore. Ogni età, l'uno e l'altro sesso, fatti miracolosi ne confermano la verità. Una vergine diventa madre, una sterile dà alla luce, un muto parla, Elisabetta profetizza, i Magi lo adorano, un bambino ancora nel seno della madre esulta, una vedova lo glorifica, e un giusto lo aspetta.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Simeone ricevendo Gesù tra le sue braccia, esclamò e disse:
* Tu sei veramente la luce per illuminare le nazioni, e la gloria del tuo popolo Israele.

Ed egli lo prese tra le sue braccia, e benedisse Dio, esclamando: «Adesso lascia, Signore, che il tuo servo se ne vada in pace, secondo la tua parola» Lc. 2,29. Ecco come il giusto, per il quale la massa del corpo è una prigione, brami d'esserne disciolto per cominciare d'essere con Cristo. Poiché esserne disciolto ed essere con Cristo, è molto meglio.

A virgin conceiveth, a barren woman beareth, a dumb man speaketh, Elizabeth prophesieth, the wise man worshippeth, the unborn child leapeth, the widow praiseth, and the just man waiteth.

A Sebàste, in Arménia, la passione di san Biàgio, Vescovo e Martire, il quale, operatore di molti miracoli, sotto il Preside Agricolào, dopo essere stato lungamente battuto e sospeso ad un legno, ove con pettini di ferro gli furono lacerate le carni, dopo aver sofferto un'orrida prigione ed essere stato sommerso in un lago, dal quale uscì salvo, finalmente, per ordine del medesimo giudice, insieme con due fanciulli, fu decapitato. Prima di lui sette donne, le quali raccoglievano le gocce di sangue che scorrevano dal corpo dello stesso Martire, mentre era tormentato, furono arrestate come Cristiane, e tutte dopo atroci tormenti percosse con la spada.
In Africa san Celerino Diacono, il quale chiuso per diciannove giorni in prigione, nei ceppi e nelle catene e in altri vari tormenti, fu glorioso Confessore di Cristo, e, mentre vinse l'avversario colla inespugnabile fermezza del suo combattimento, aprì agli altri la strada della vittoria.
Nello stesso luogo i santi tre Martiri consanguinei dello stesso Diacono Celerino, cioè Laurentino ed Ignazio suoi zii, e Celerina sua nonna, i quali prima erano stati coronati col martirio; sulle loro gloriose gesta si ha una lettera del beato Cipriàno.
Così pure in Africa i santi Martiri Felice, Sinfrónio, Ippolito e Compagni.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep in England the feast of the holy Confessor Laurence, Archbishop of Canterbury, who governed that church in succession to holy Augustin, and who converted King Ethelbert himself to the faith, of whom mention is made as upon this day.
February 3rd 2026, the 15th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

At Sebaste, in Armenia, the holy martyr Blase, (about the year 316,) Bishop of that city, and the worker of many miracles. Under the President Agricolaus he was long flogged, then hung to a beam, where his flesh was rent with iron combs, then he suffered a foul imprisonment, after which he was cast into the lake, and, forasmuch as he came out thence unhurt, he was beheaded, by order of the same judge, along with two lads.
Before him seven women, who were collecting the drops of his blood as they fell during the torture, were arrested for being Christians, and after being grievously tormented were put to the sword.
In Africa, the holy Deacon Celerinus, who was kept nineteen days in prison, and was a glorious confessor of Christ under the lash, and in iron chains and other sufferings, and while he overcame the adversary of his contending by his invincible firmness, he led the way for victories for others, (in the year 280.) Likewise the holy martyrs Laurentinus, (these martyrs mentioned by Cyprian, Letter 34,) and Ignatius, his father's and mother's brothers, and Celerina his grandmother, who had before him been crowned with martyrdom, to the glorious praises of all whom there remaineth to witness an epistle of blessed Cyprian.
