La vergine Agata, cui i Palermitani e i Catanesi si disputano d'aver dato i natali, nacque in Sicilia da nobili parenti, e ottenne la corona d'un glorioso martirio a Catania nella persecuzione dell'imperatore Decio. Essendo ella egualmente rinomata per beltà e castità, Quinziano, governatore della Sicilia, se ne innamorò. Ma dopo aver tentato con tutti i modi di piegare Agata ai suoi desideri, non potendo ridurla ai suoi voleri, fattala arrestare sotto il pretesto della superstizione cristiana, la diede a corrompere a una certa donna Afrodisia. Ma la compagnia di Afrodisia non avendo potuto scuotere né la fermezza della sua fede né il voto della sua verginità, quella annunzia a Quinziano tutti i suoi sforzi riuscire inutili. Perciò egli ordina che gli si conduca la Vergine; e: Non ti vergogni, le dice, tu che sei nata da nobile famiglia, di menare la vita umile e servile dei Cristiani? A cui Agata L'umiltà e servitù cristiana sono molto più preferibili alle ricchezze e grandezze dei re.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Quindi il governatore sdegnato le dà a scegliere o d'onorare gli dei o di subire la violenza del tormenti. Ma rimanendo ella ferma nella fede, viene prima schiaffeggiata e messa in prigione; donde fatta uscire l'indomani, e perseverando nel suo proposito, è torturata sul cavalletto con applicazione di lastre roventate. Poi le si recide una mammella. Durante questo supplizio, la Vergine indirizzandosi a Quinziano: Crudele tiranno, dice, non ti vergogni di recidere a una donna ciò che tu stesso hai succhiato dalla madre tua? Gettata di nuovo in prigione, la notte seguente fu guarita da un certo vegliardo, che si diceva Apostolo di Cristo. Chiamata ancora dal governatore, e perseverando ella nella confessione di Cristo, è rotolata su rottami aguzzi e su carboni accesi.

Nel qual tempo tutta la città traballò per gran terremoto, e due pareti, crollando, seppellirono Silvino e Falconio domestici del governatore. Quindi essendo la città in preda a vivo fermento, Quinziano temendo una sedizione nel popolo, ordina che Agata mezza morta sia ricondotta di nascosto in prigione. Dove ella pregò Dio così: Signore, tu che m'hai custodita fin dall'infanzia, che hai tolto da me l'amore del secolo, che m'hai resa superiore ai tormenti dei carnefici, accogli l'anima mia. E in questa preghiera se n'andò al cielo, il 5 di Febbraio: il suo corpo venne sepolto dai Cristiani.

Nostro Signore, parendogli grave esortare direttamente alla verginità, cerca di trarli all'amore di essa coll'obbligo della legge dell'insolubilità del matrimonio. Poi, per mostrare ch'essa è possibile, dice cosi: «Ci sono degli impotenti i quali sono nati così dal seno materno, e ce ne sono degli altri che sono stati resi tali dagli uomini, e ce ne sono di quelli che si sono fatti tali da sé per il regno del cieli» Matt. 19, 12. The Maiden Agatha was a Sicilian of noble birth. The citizens of Palermo and Catania dispute as to which city had the honour of being her birthplace. It was at Catania that, during the persecution under the Emperor Decius, she won the crown of a glorious martyrdom. She was equally celebrated for her beauty and her chastity, and Quintianus, Praetor of Sicily, conceived a passion for her. He tried every sort of device to overcome her modesty, and when he found it impossible to make her consent to his wishes, he caused her to be arrested on a charge of Christian superstition, and handed over to a woman named Aphrodisia to be corrupted. The company, however, of this woman had no effect in shaking her constancy in the Christian worship, nor her settled determination to preserve her purity. Aphrodisia therefore reported to Quintianus that she was only throwing away her pains on Agatha. He ordered her to be brought before him. Thou, said he, art the daughter of a noble family dost thou feel no shame in living the degraded and slavish life of a Christian? Agatha answered him, The lowliness and bondage of a Christian are far nobler than the estate and pride of a king.

℟. But by the Lord's help I will continue to acknowledge Him Who hath saved me

Then the Praetor, being incensed against her, gave her the alternative of either sacrificing to the gods, or being submitted to the torture; and as she remained firm in the faith, she was buffeted and sent back to prison. The next day she was brought forth, and, because her resolution was still unshaken, she was stretched on the rack and tortured with pieces of white-hot metal. Then her breasts were cut off. When Agatha received this injury she cried out to Quintianus, Cruel tyrant, art thou not ashamed to do this to me, having thyself sucked at a mother's breast? She was remanded again to prison and put in irons. That night an old man, who called himself an Apostle of Christ, came to her, and healed her wounds. The following day she was brought for the last time before the Praetor. Her constancy was unmoved, and she was rolled on sharp potsherds and live embers.

At that time the whole city was shaken with a great earthquake, and two of the Praetor's dearest friends, Silvinus and Falconius, were killed by falling walls. The townspeople were in an uproar, and Quintianus, in fear of a riot, ordered Agatha, who was half dead, to be carried back to prison quietly. Then she made the following prayer O Lord, Who hast been my Keeper from my childhood, Who hast taken from me all love for this present world, Who hast strengthened me so that I am more than conqueror over the cruelty of the executioners, receive my spirit, and with these words she passed to heaven. She finished her testimony on the 5th day of February, in the year of our Lord 251. Her body was buried by the Christians.

San Tito, Vescovo di Creta e Confessore, il cui giorno natalizio ricorre il quattro Gennaio.
A Cesarèa, nella Cappadócia, il natale di santa Dorotèa, Vergine e Martire, la quale, sotto Saprizio, Preside di quella Provincia, prima tormentata coll'eculeo, poi lunghissimamente percossa cogli schiaffi, da ultimo fu condannata a morte. Durante il suo martirio un certo Teófilo rétore, convertitosi alla fede di Cristo, e subito crudelmente tormentato coll'eculeo, alla fine fu ucciso colla spada.
Ad Emesa, nella Fenicia, san Silvano Vescovo, il quale, avendo governato quella Chiesa per quarant'anni, finalmente, sotto Massimiano Imperatore, insieme con altri due esposto alle fiere e sbranato membro a membro, ricevette la palma del martirio.
Nello stesso giorno i santi Martiri Saturnino, Teófilo e Revocata.
Ad Auvergne, in Frància, sant'Antoliàno Martire.
Ad Arras, in Frància, san Vedàsto, Vescovo della stessa città, la cui vita e morte fu resa illustre da moltissimi miracoli.
