Gen 4:17-22
17 Caino conobbe sua moglie, che divenne madre e diede alla luce Enoch: allora fabbricò una città, e gli pose nome Enoch dal nome di suo figlio.
18 Or Enoch ebbe Irad, e Irad ebbe Maviael, e Maviael ebbe Matusael, e Matusael ebbe Lamech.
19 Il quale prese due mogli, una di nome Ada, e l'altra di nome Sella.
20 E Ada diede alla luce Jabel, che fu il padre di quei che abitano sotto le tende e dei pastori.
21 E il nome di suo fratello fu Jubal: questi fu il padre dei sonatori di cetra e d'organo.
22 Sella poi diede alla luce Tubalcain, che lavorò di martello e fu artefice d'ogni sorta di lavori in rame e in ferro. Sorella poi di Tubalcain fu Noema.

Gen 4:23-26
23 E Lamech disse alle sue mogli Ada e Sella: Udite la mia voce, mogli di Lamech, ascoltate le mie parole: io ho ucciso un uomo con una ferita fattagli da me, e un giovinetto con un mio colpo.
24 Caino sarà vendicato sette volte ma Lamech settanta volte sette.
25 E Adamo conobbe ancora sua moglie: essa diede alla luce un figlio, e gli pose nome Set, dicendo: Il Signore mi ha dato un altro figlio in luogo di Abele, ucciso da Caino.
26 E anche a Set nacque un figlio, che egli chiamò Enos: questi cominciò ad invocare il nome del Signore.

℟. Il Signore Dio disse: Non è bene che l'uomo sia solo:

Gen 5:1-5
1 Questo è il libro della discendenza di Adamo. Il giorno in cui Dio creò l'uomo, lo fece a somiglianza di Dio.
2 Li creò maschio e femmina, e li benedisse: e pose loro nome di Adamo il giorno che furono creati.
3 E Adamo visse centotrenta anni: ed ebbe un figlio a sua immagine e somiglianza, e gli pose nome Set.
4 E Adamo, dopo aver avuto Set, visse ottocento anni: ed ebbe figli e figlie.
5 E tutto il tempo che visse Adamo fu di novecentotrent'anni, e poi morì.

Lettura 4
È risaputo come Tito vescovo dei Cretesi, appena iniziato per bocca dell'Apostolo Paolo ai sacramenti e ai misteri della fede cristiana, rifulse di tale luce di santità nella Chiesa allora nascente, che meritò d'essere annoverato tra i discepoli dello stesso santo Dottore dei Gentili. Chiamato a partecipare all'onere della predicazione, divenne così caro a Paolo per lo zelo nel predicare il Vangelo e per la sua fedeltà, ch'egli, venuto a Troade per il Vangelo di Cristo, dichiarò che il suo spirito non ebbe pace perché non vi trovò Tito, suo fratello. E poco dopo andando in Macedonia, così dimostra di nuovo il suo affetto verso di lui: «Ma colui che consola gli umili, Dio, ha consolato anche noi colla venuta di Tito» 2 Cor 7, 6.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Ho trovato il mio servo David e l'ho unto col mio santo olio:
* la mia mano lo assisterà.
℣. Nulla potrà contro di lui il nemico e il figlio dell'iniquità non potrà fargli del male.

Benedizione. Cristo ci doni le gioie della vita eterna.

Lettura 5
Perciò inviato dall'Apostolo a Corinto, assolse con tanta sapienza e dolcezza questa missione, che consisteva principalmente nel raccogliere offerte dalla pietà dei fedeli per sollevare la povertà della Chiesa degli Ebrei, che non solo mantenne nella fede di Cristo i Corinti, ma eccitò in essi il desiderio, il pianto, l'emulazione per Paolo, ch'era stato il primo ad istruirli. Dopo aver fatti più viaggi per terra e per mare alfine di spargere la semente della divina parola fra i Gentili diversi per lingua e nazionalità, e dopo aver sostenuto con grande fermezza d'animo cure e fatiche per il trionfo della croce, approdò all'isola di Creta insieme con Paolo suo maestro. Scelto poi dall'Apostolo a vescovo di questa chiesa, non è a dubitare, giusta le istruzioni dello stesso Paolo, ch'egli si diportasse così bene in quella carica, da mostrare in se stesso, giusta il consiglio di Paolo suo maestro, «un modello di buone opere nella dottrina, nell'integrità, nella gravità» Tit. 2, 7.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Ho posto il mio aiuto in un potente ed ho esaltalo uno scelto tra il mio popolo.
* La mia mano lo assisterà.

Lettura 6
Pertanto, come una lucerna, egli diffuse la luce della religione fra coloro che giacevano, quasi sotto l'ombra della morte, nelle tenebre dell'idolatria e della menzogna. È tradizione ch'egli s'affaticasse validamente per inalberare il vessillo della croce fra i Dalmati. Finalmente pieno di meriti e di giorni, a 94 anni, il 4 di Gennaio, s'addormentò nel Signore colla preziosa morte dei giusti, e fu sepolto nella chiesa dove l'Apostolo l'avea stabilito prete. Il suo nome elogiato specialmente da san Giovanni Crisostomo e da san Girolamo, si legge lo stesso giorno nei Martirologio Romano: e Pio IX ordinò che la sua festa fosse celebrata da tutta la Chiesa.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Questi ha praticato davanti a Dio grandi virtù e tutta la terra è ripiena della sua dottrina:
* egli interceda per i peccati di tutti gli uomini.

Omelia di s. Gregorio papa
Omelia 17ma sui Vangeli.
Il Signore e Salvatore nostro, fratelli carissimi, ci avvisa ora con parole ed ora con opere. Infatti le sue opere sono precetti; e, quando fa qualche cosa, anche senza dir nulla, ci mostra quello che dobbiamo fare noi. Ecco, dunque, egli manda i discepoli a predicare a due a due, perché sono due i precetti della carità, cioè l'amor di Dio e l'amor del prossimo, e bisogna essere almeno in due per poter praticare la carità. Infatti propriamente parlando, non si esercita la carità verso se stessi; ma l'amore, perché possa essere carità, deve avere per oggetto un altro.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,
* e l'ha incoronato alle porte del paradiso.

Ecco dunque che il Signore manda i discepoli a predicare a due a due, insinuandoci così tacitamente come, chi non ha carità verso gli altri, in nessun modo deve assumersi l'ufficio della predicazione. E con ragione si dice che li mandò davanti a sé in ogni città e luogo dove egli stava per andare. Infatti il Signore segue i suoi predicatori; la predicazione infatti precede, e allora il Signore viene ad abitare nell'anima nostra, quando è preceduto dalle parole di coloro che ci esortano; ed è così che la verità è ricevuta dallo spirito.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Siano cinti i vostri fianchi ed accese nelle vostre mani le lucerne, e
* siate come coloro che aspettano il loro padrone quando torni da nozze.

Lettura 9
Commemorazione: S. Dorotea Vergine e Martire
Dorotea vergine, di Cesarea di Cappadocia, arrestata dal governatore Apricio perché confessava Cristo, fu consegnata alle sorelle Crista e Callista che avevano abbandonata la fede, affinché le facessero cambiare risoluzione. Ma avvenne il contrario; perché Dorotea le ricondusse alla pratica della religione cristiana, per la quale soffrirono anche il martirio. The Apostle Paul had no sooner by his preaching gathered the Cretans to the Sacraments and doctrines of the Christian Faith, than he made Titus their Bishop. It is agreed that the holiness of Titus shone with so bright a light before the infant Church, that he earned fellowship with the disciples of the Teacher of the Gentiles. Being taken to share in the work of preaching, he so endeared himself to Paul by his faithfulness and zeal in declaring the Gospel, that the Apostle saith When I came to Troas to preach Christ's Gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord, I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia. 2 Cor. ii. 12, 13. And again he saith: When we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears. Nevertheless, God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus. vii. 5, 6.

It was this affection of Paul toward Titus, which had induced him to send him to Corinth upon a Mission which mainly concerned the collection of alms from the charity of the faithful for the relief of the poor Hebrew Saints at Jerusalem. This mission Titus discharged with such wisdom and gentleness, that he not only strengthened the Corinthians in the faith, but also stirred up in them an earnest desire, a mourning, a fervent mind toward Paul, their earliest teacher. ~vii. 7. Many were the other journeys by land and sea which Titus undertook in order to sow the seed of God's word among men of diverse nations, tongues, and countries. Filled with bold loyalty to the banner of the Cross, he went with Paul to the island of Crete. Of the Church of Crete the Apostle himself made him the first Bishop; and we may not doubt that, as such, he was what his Teacher bade him be, in all things showing himself a pattern of good works, in doctrine, in uncorruptness, in gravity. Tit 2:7

Like a candle, he gave forth the light of faith in the midst of men sitting in the darkness of idolatry and falsehood, as in the shadow of death. He is said to have sweated mightily to unfurl the banner of the Cross among the Dalmatians. He was full of days and good works, when, upon a 4th of January, in the 94th year of his age, he died one of those deaths which are precious in the sight of the Lord. He was buried in the Church of which the Apostle had made him the minister. His praises have been mostly written by St. John Chrysostom and St Jerome. The 4th of January is the day upon which his name is read in the Roman Martyrology, but Pope Pius IX. assigned for his Festival, to be kept with an Office and Mass by the clergy secular and regular throughout the Catholic world, the first free day afterwards.

Dearly beloved brethren, our Lord and Saviour doth sometimes admonish us by words, and sometimes by works. Yea, His very works do themselves teach us for that which He doth silently His example still moveth us to copy. Behold how He sendeth forth His disciples to preach by two and two since there are two commandments to love, that is, a commandment to love God, and a commandment to love our neighbour and where there are not two, the one, being alone, hath not whereon to do the Lord's commandment. And no man can properly be said to love himself: for love tendeth outward toward our neighbour, if it be the love whereto the Gospel doth oblige us.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

San Romuàldo Abate, Padre dei Monaci Camaldolesi, il cui giorno natalizio è commemorato il diciannove Giugno, ma la sua festa si celebra particolarmente in questo giorno per la traslazione del suo corpo.
Ad Augusta, ora detta Londra, in Inghiltérra, il natale del beato Angolo Vescovo, il quale, avendo terminato il corso della vita col martirio, meritò di ricevere i premi eterni.
Nella Frigia sant'Adàuco Martire, il quale, illustre per italica stirpe, ed onorato dagli Imperatori con quasi tutti i gradi di dignità, in fine, mentre ancora esercitava l'ufficio di Questore, per la difesa della fede fu fatto degno della corona del martirio.
Nello stesso luogo moltissimi santi Martiri, cittadini di una stessa città, dei quali era capo lo stesso Adàuco. Essendo tutti Cristiani, e costantemente perseverando nella confessione della fede, furono bruciati dall'Imperatore Calérlo Massimiàno.
Ad Eracléa, nel Ponto, san Teodoro, condottiero di soldati, il quale, per comando di Licinio, dopo molti tormenti, decapitato, vincitore se ne andò al cielo.
