Romualdo nacque a Ravenna da Sergio, di nobile casato, e giovanetto si ritirò nel vicino monastero di Classe per farvi penitenza: dove i discorsi d'un santo religioso l'infiammarono di zelo ardente per la pietà, ed ebbe nella chiesa, di notte, due apparizioni di sant'Apollinare per cui si rese monaco, secondo la predizione che gli aveva fatta il servo di Dio. Bentosto si recò sui confini del Veneto da Marino, celebre in quel tempo per la santità della vita e l'austerità della disciplina, per averlo maestro e guida nella via stretta e sublime della perfezione.

Combattuto da satana con insidie e dall'invidia degli uomini, egli si esercitava tanto più umilmente e assiduamente nel digiuno e nella preghiera, e si dedicava alla meditazione delle cose celesti, versandovi copiose lacrime: e tuttavia era sempre così gioviale, da rallegrare chi lo guardava. Fu in grande onore presso principi e re; e molti, per suo consiglio, rinunziando alle attrattive del mondo, si ritirarono nella solitudine. Acceso dal desiderio del martirio, parti per la Pannonia sperando di trovarvelo, ma una malattia che lo tormentava quando s'avanzava, e l'abbandonava quando retrocedeva, lo costrinse a ritornarsene.

Lettura 6
Illustre per miracoli in vita e dopo morte, ebbe anche lo spirito di profezia. Come il Patriarca Giacobbe, egli scorse in visione una scala che dalla terra s'elevava al cielo, per la quale salivano e scendevano degli uomini bianco-vestiti; nella quale meravigliosa visione riconobbe designarsi i monaci Camaldolesi, di cui fu istitutore. Finalmente dopo esser vissuto 120 anni e aver servito a Dio per un secolo con una vita austerissima, se ne andò a lui nell'anno della salute 1027. Il suo corpo ritrovato intatto cinque anni dopo la sua sepoltura, fu deposto con onore nella chiesa del suo ordine a Fabriano.

Quegli è perfetto, che va e vende tutto che ha, e lo dà ai poveri, e si mette a seguire Cristo ; poiché avrà un tesoro inesauribile nel cielo. Quindi, quando Pietro l'interrogò, Gesù ben disse questi tali : « In verità dico, voi che mi avete seguito, nella rigenerazione, quando il Figlio dell'uomo sederà sul trono della sua maestà, sederete anche voi su dodici troni a giudicare le dodici tribù Israele ». Insegnando così a quelli che s'affaticano in questa vita per il suo nome, a sperarne la ricompensa nell'altra, cioè nella rigenerazione ; ossia ché risuscitando saremo nati a una vita immortale, noi ch'eravamo stati generati mortali per una vita caduca

Ed è una ricompensa ben giusta che quelli, i quali qui hanno disprezzato per Cristo la gloria delle umane grandezze, siano là glorificati particolarmente da Cristo e siedano giudici con lui : essi che nessuna considerazione poté smuovere dal seguire le sue vestigia. Nessuno poi creda che solo i dodici Apostoli, poiché al posto di Giuda prevaricatore fu eletto Mattia, saranno allora a giudicare ; come non le sole dodici tribù d'Israele ad essere giudicate altrimenti la tribù di Levi, che è la tredicesima, rimarrebbe ingiudicata.

E Paolo, ch'è il tredicesimo Apostolo, sarà privato del privilegio di giudicare? lui che dice : « Non sapete che giudicheremo gli angeli, quanto più le cose dei secolo?» 1 Cor., 6, 3 Si deve dunque sapere, che tutti che, sull'esempio degli Apostoli, hanno lasciato che possedevano, e hanno seguito Cristo, verranno con lui a giudicare, come pure tutto il genere umano sarà giudicato. The holy Abbot Romuald was the son of one Sergius, of a noble family of Ravenna. While he was still very young, he went to a neighbouring monastery at Classis to do penance. While he was there he heard a discourse by a monk, which stirred him up strongly to aim at godliness of living; and he had afterwards in the Church by night two visions in which the blessed servant of God Apollinaris foretold to him that he should become a monk himself. He accordingly did so; and soon afterwards betook himself to one Marinus, whose holy life and strict discipline were then much noised about in all the coasts of the Venetians, that he might by his teaching and guidance attain towards the hard and lofty point of perfection.

God worked miracles by him both during his life and after his death, and likewise gave him the gift of prophecy. At the age of 120 years, of which he had spent 100 in serving God in great hardness, he passed into His Presence, in the year of Salvation 1027. If thou wilt be perfect, saith Christ, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and come and follow Me and thou shalt have treasure in heaven. Matth. xix. 21. Yea, treasure that passeth not away! Unto such saith Jesus, at the questioning of Peter Amen I say unto you, that ye which have followed Me, in the regeneration, when the Son of Man shall sit in the throne of His glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. He taught them, which work for His Name's sake in this life, to look for their reward in another life that is, in the regeneration. In the regeneration! when we who have been born dying creatures into a dying life, shall in the resurrection be born again into an undying life.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is he which wrought great wonders before God, and praised the Lord with all his heart.
* May he pray for all people, that their sins may be forgiven unto them.

San Giovànni di Matha, Prete e Confessore, che fu Fondatore dell'Ordine della santissima Trinità per la redenzione degli schiavi, e si riposò nel Signore il diciassette Dicembre.
A Somàsca, nel territorio di Bérgamo, il natale di san Girólamo Emiliàni Confessore, che fu Fondatore della Congregazione Somàsca, e, illustre per molti miracoli in vita e dopo morte, dal Sommo Pontefice Clemènte decimoterzo fu ascritto nel catalogo dei Santi, e dal Papa Pio undecimo fu eletto e dichiarato Patrono universale presso Dio degli orfani e della gioventù derelitta. La sua festa però si celebra il venti Luglio.

Ad Alessandria la passione di santa Coluta Martire, la quale, sotto l'Imperatore Décio, fu fatta prigioniera dai pagani e condotta innanzi agli idoli per adorarli; ma rifiutandosi essa con esecrazione, la legarono per i piedi e trascinandola così legata per le piazze della città, la dilaniarono con orribile supplizio.
A Pavia san Giovénzio Vescovo, che si affaticò vigorosamente per il Vangelo.
A Milano la deposizione di sant'Onorato, Vescovo e Confessore.
A Verdun, in Frància, san Pàolo Vescovo, illustre per il dono dei miracoli.
Presso Muréto, nel territorio di Limoges, il natale di santo Stéfano Abate, che fu Fondatore dell'Ordine di Grandmont, e divenne illustre per le virtù e miracoli.
Nel monastero di Vallombrósa il Beato Piétro, Cardinale e Vescovo di Albàno, dell'Ordine di Vallombrósa, soprannominato Igneo, perchè passò illeso attraverso il fuoco.
