Si legge che il Signore si adirò: perché sebbene avesse pensato, o meglio, sapesse che l'uomo, posto in questa terra sotto il peso della carne, non possa essere senza peccato (ché la terra è come un luogo di tentazione e la carne un incentivo di corruzione), tuttavia, pur essendo dotati di ragione e pur avendo la forza dell'anima per governare il corpo, senza ritegno alcuno precipitaron nell'abisso da cui non volevano risollevarsi. Dio non la pensa come gli uomini, così che un giudizio nuovo abbia a succedere in lui a uno precedente, né si adira quasi soggetto a cambiamento: ma perciò si leggono di lui queste cose, per far intendere la gravezza dei nostri peccati, che meritò la disgrazia divina: come se le colpe fossero giunte a tale eccesso che lo stesso Dio, il quale per sua natura non è mosso né da ira, né da odio, né da alcun'altra passione, ne sembri provocato a sdegno.

Di più egli minacciò di sterminare l'uomo. «Sterminerò, disse, dall'uomo fino agli armenti, e dai rettili fino ai volatili» Gen. 6,7. In che avevano mancato gli esseri irragionevoli? Ma siccome essi erano stati fatti per l'uomo, distrutto colui per il quale erano stati fatti, ne conseguiva che anch'essi fossero distrutti, non essendoci più chi se ne sarebbe servito. In un senso più alto ciò prova questo: che l'uomo possiede una mente capace di ragionare. L'uomo infatti si definisce un animale vivo, mortale, ragionevole. Spento in lui il meglio, si spegne ancora ogni senso: perché non gli rimane più nulla che possa salvarlo una volta che sia venuto meno il fondamento della salvezza, la virtù.

A condanna poi degli altri uomini e ad esprimere la divina bontà, si dice che Noè trovò grazia presso Dio. Con ciò si mostra ancora che le colpe degli altri non offuscano quest'uomo giusto, perché egli è conservato per essere il padre di tutto il genere umano. Ed egli non è lodato per la nobiltà dei natali, ma per il merito della sua giustizia e santità. Infatti la nobiltà d'un uomo dabbene, è il numero delle sue virtù: perché come la nobiltà degli uomini viene dagli uomini, così quella delle anime viene dalle virtù. Infatti una famiglia è illustre per lo splendore della stirpe, ma ciò che rende illustri le anime è lo splendore delle virtù.

Omelia 15 sul Vangelo
La lettura del santo Vangelo che ora avete udita, fratelli carissimi, non ha bisogno di spiegazione, ma di esortazione. Perché l'umana debolezza non può presumere di discutere questa parabola che la Verità stessa ci ha esposto. Tuttavia in questa stessa spiegazione del Signore c'è una cosa che noi dobbiamo meditare: perché se noi vi dicessimo che la semente significa la parola di Dio, il campo il mondo, gli uccelli i demoni, le spine le ricchezze, la vostra mente forse esiterebbe a crederci. Perciò lo stesso Signore si degnò di spiegare ciò che diceva, affinché voi impariate a cercare ciò che significano le cose che non ci volle spiegare per se stesso.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

E pure sono spine, perché colle punture dei pensieri che dànno, lacerano lo spirito: e allorché ci trascinano fino al peccato, ci fanno, per così dire, una ferita sanguinante. Onde a ragione il Signore in questo luogo, come attesta un altro Evangelista, non le chiama ricchezze, ma «fallaci ricchezze » Matth. 13,22.

We read that the Lord was angry. It is in the thoughts, that is to say, in the knowledge of God, that man being put on earth and weighted with the body cannot be without sin, for earth is the home of temptations, and the flesh is a bait for corruption. Yet man had a reasonable soul, and his soul had power to control his body; and, being so made, he made no struggle to keep himself from falling into that from whence he would not return. God's thoughts are not as man's thoughts; in Him there is no such thing as change of mind, no such thing as to be angry and then cool down again. These things are written that we may know the bitterness of our sins, whereby we have earned the Divine wrath. To such a degree had iniquity grown that God, Who by His nature cannot be moved by anger, or hatred, or any passion whatsoever, is represented as provoked to anger.

But more effectually to condemn the rest of men, and to manifest the goodness of God, it is written that Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. He is praised, not because he was of a noble race, but because he was a just man and perfect. The stock of a just man yieldeth men of just souls; for virtues, like blood, are hereditary. Among men are some families illustrious for honourable pedigrees, and so there are also races of souls whose comeliness is the lustre of virtues.

But there is, in that very explanation by the Lord, somewhat, which it behoveth us well to weigh. If it were but we who bade you believe that by the seed is signified the word; by the field, the world; by the birds, the devils; and by the thorns, riches ye would perchance doubt of the truth of our explanation. Therefore the Lord Himself hath vouchsafed to give this explanation, and that, not for this parable only, but that ye may know in what manner to interpret others, whereof He hath not given the meaning.

San Cirillo, Vescovo di Alessàndria, Confessore e Dottore della Chiesa, il cui giorno natalizio ricorre il ventotto Gennaio.
Ad Alessàndria il natale di sant'Apollónia, Vergine e Martire, alla quale i persecutori, sotto Décio, prima estrassero tutti i denti, poi, innalzato ed acceso un rogo, minacciarono di bruciarla viva, se non avesse pronunciato con loro empie parole; ma essa, avendo riflettuto un poco tra sè, si svincolò improvvisamente dalle mani di quegli empi, e accesa internamente da più grande ardore di Spirito Santo, si gettò nel fuoco, che le avevano preparato, così spontaneamente, che gli autori stessi di quella crudeltà rimasero sbigottiti, come si fosse trovata più pronta una donna alia morte che il persecutore alla pena.
A Roma la passione dei santi Martiri Alessàndro ed altri trentotto coronati.
Nel castello di Lèmela, in Africa, i santi Martiri Primo e Donato Diaconici quali, mentre difendevano in chiesa l'altare, furono uccisi dai Donatisti.
