Cirillo d'Alessandria, il cui elogio non si fonda soltanto sulla testimonianza di alcuni, ma è celebrato altresì negli atti dei concili ecumenici di Efeso e di Calcedonia, nacque da illustri genitori, era nipote di Teofilo vescovo di Alessandria, e fin da giovanetto diede chiari segni d'ingegno superiore. Perfettamente istruito nelle lettere e nelle scienze, si recò presso Giovanni vescovo di Gerusalemme, affin di perfezionarsi nella fede cristiana. Tornato poi ad Alessandria, ed essendo morto Teofilo, fu innalzato a quella sede: nella qual carica mostrò sempre sì bene in se stesso il tipo del perfetto pastore tracciato dall'Apostolo, da acquistarsi a buon diritto la riputazione di prelato santissimo.

℟. Ho trovato il mio servo David e l'ho unto col mio santo olio:

Infiammato di zelo per la salvezza delle anime, mise ogni diligenza a mantenere nella fede e integrità di costumi il gregge affidatogli e a preservarlo dai pascoli avvelenati degl'infedeli ed eretici. Quindi si sforzò d'espellere dalla città i seguaci di Navato e di punire, secondo le leggi, i Giudei che, nella loro frenesia, avevano cospirato di massacrare i Cristiani. Ma lo zelo di Cirillo per l'integrità della fede cattolica si mostrò sopra-tutto contro Nestorio vescovo di Costantinopoli, il quale pretendeva che Gesù Cristo nato da Maria Vergine fosse solo uomo e non Dio, e che la divinità gli fosse stata accordata in grazia dei suoi meriti; dopo aver tentato invano di ridurlo a resipiscenza, lo denunziò al sommo Pontefice san Celestino.

Per delegazione di Celestino, egli presiedé al concilio di Efeso, in cui l'eresia Nestoriana fu interamente proscritta, Nestorio condannato e deposto dalla sua Sede, e il domma cattolico di una sola e divina persona in Cristo, e della divina maternità della gloriosa Vergine Maria proclamato, applaudendo l'intero popolo, il quale a manifestare l'irrefrenabile gioia accompagnò i vescovi a casa con faci accese. Ma appunto perciò Cirillo ebbe a subire calunnie, ingiurie e moltissime persecuzioni da Nestorio e da' suoi fautori; le quali egli sopportò colla massima pazienza, così che, sollecito soltanto della fede, stimava un niente tutto quanto gli eretici dicevan e macchinavano contro di lui. Finalmente, dopo d'aver sostenuto per la Chiesa di Dio le più grandi fatiche, e pubblicati moltissimi scritti sia a confutazione dei pagani ed eretici sia a spiegazione delle sacre Scritture e del domma cattolico, fece una santa fine nell'anno 444, nei trentesimo secondo di episcopato. Il sommo Pontefice Leone XIII estese a tutta la Chiesa e la Messa di questo illustrissimo campione della fede cattolica, luminare delta chiesa Orientale.

Il Signore mostra che si devono ritenere insipidi coloro che, agognando l'abbondanza e temendo la scarsezza dei beni del tempo, perdono i beni dell'eternità che non possono esser dati né tolti dagli uomini. Quindi: Se il sale diventasse scipito, con che cosa lo si potrà render salato? Vale a dire se voi, mediante i quali si devono condire, per così dire, i popoli, per timore delle persecuzioni nel tempo perderete il regno dei cieli, quali saranno gli uomini, mediante i quali si elimini da voi l'errore, dato che il Signore vi ha scelti per eliminare l'errore degli altri?

Quindi: Non serve a nulla il sale scipito, se non per essere gettato fuori e calpestato dagli uomini. Quindi non è calpestato dagli uomini chi soffre la persecuzione, ma chi diventa scipito perché teme la persecuzione. Difatti non si può calpestare se non chi è sotto, ma non è sotto colui che, pur subendo molti dolori in terra, col cuore è tuttavia rivolto al cielo.

Reading 4
The praises of Cyril of Alexandria have been celebrated not only by one writer or another, but have even been registered in the acts of the Ecumenical Councils of Ephesus and Chalcedon. He was born of distinguished parents, and was the nephew of Theophilus, Pope of Alexandria. While he was still young he displayed marks of his excellent understanding. After giving a deep study to letters and science he betook himself to John, Bishop of Jerusalem, to be perfected in the Christian faith. After his return to Alexandria, and the death of Theophilus, he was raised to that see. In this office he kept ever before his eyes the type of the Shepherd of souls as it had been laid down by the Apostle; and by ever adhering thereto deservedly earned the glory of an holy Bishop.

Zeal for the salvation of souls was kindled in him, and he undertook all care to keep in the faith and in soundness of life the flock unto him committed, and to preserve them from the poisonous pastures of infidelity and heresy; hence, in accordance with the laws, he caused the followers of Novatus to be expelled from the city, and those Jews to be punished who had been induced by rage to plan a massacre of the Christians. His eminent care for the preservation of the Catholic faith pure and undenled shone forth especially in his controversy against Nestorius, Patriarch of Constantinople, who asserted that Jesus Christ had been born of the Virgin Mary as man only and not as God, and that the Godhead had been bestowed upon Him because of His merits. Cyril first attempted to convert Nestorius, but when he found this hopeless he denounced him to the Supreme Pontiff the holy Celestine.

As delegate of Pope Celestine, Cyril presided at the Council of Ephesus where the Nestorian heresy was condemned; Nestorius deprived of his see; and the Catholic doctrine as to the unity of Person in Christ and the divine Motherhood of the glorious Virgin Mary was laid down amid the rejoicings of all the people, who escorted the bishops to their lodgings with a torch-light procession. For this reason Nestorius and his followers made Cyril the object of slanders, insults, and persecutions which he bore with profound patience, having all his care for the purity of the faith, and taking no heed to what the heretics might say or try against him. At length he died a holy death, in the year of salvation 444 and of his own papacy the 32nd. After vast work for the Church of God, and leaving behind him diverse writings directed either against heathens and heretics or to the exposition of the holy Scriptures and of Catholic doctrine, the Supreme Pontiff Leo XIII. extended to the Universal Church the Office and Mass of this most eminent champion of the Catholic faith, and light of the Eastern Church.

The Lord would have us understand how that men do lose their power of savouring others with righteousness when they are willing to place their eternal welfare in jeopardy for the sake of any témporal advantage, like as attainment of ease or luxury, or escape from suffering or toil. For that which is eternal, unlike things of this world, can neither be bestowed by men, nor by them taken away. Hence, when he asketh: If the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? he would have us understand the question to be: If ye, by whom mankind is preserved from corruption, be willing to lose the kingdom of heaven so as to escape trials or persecutions in this world, who is there to preserve you from corruption, seeing ye are they that God hath chosen to preserve all others from corruption?

Commemoration of: S. Apollonia, Virgin and Martyr
Apollonia was an aged virgin of Alexandria, who, in the year of salvation 249, in the reign of the Emperor Decius, was brought before the idols to worship them, but refused, declaring that Christ Jesus is True God, and that to Him worship is due. The cruel executioners beat and pulled out all her teeth, and threatened to burn her alive if she would not deny Christ. To whom she answered, that for Christ Jesus' sake she was ready to die. Being taken to the place of execution she stood for a few moments as if in doubt, and then, the fire of the Holy Ghost burning up in her heart, she broke from those that held her, and leapt of her own accord into the flames. Her body was quickly consumed, and her soul departed pure to obtain the eternal crown of martyrdom.
