Quadam vero die venit ex more, atque ad eam, cum discípulis venerábilis ejus descéndit frater; qui totum diem in Dei láudibus sacrísque collóquiis ducéntes, incumbéntibus jam noctis ténebris, simul accepérunt cibum. Gen 8:5-9
5 E le acque andarono decrescendo sino al decimo mese: e il decimo mese, il primo giorno del mese, apparvero le cime dei monti.
6 E passati quaranta giorni, Noè aprì la finestra che aveva fatta nell'arca, e mandò fuori un corvo:
7 Il quale uscì e non tornò, finché le acque non si asciugarono sulla terra.
8 Mandò dopo di esso anche una colomba per vedere se le acque fossero diminuite sulla superficie della terra.
9 Ma essa non avendo trovato ove posare il suo piede, tornò a lui nell'arca.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Porrò il mio arcobaleno nelle nuvole del cielo, disse il Signore a Noè:
* E mi ricorderò della mia alleanza che ho fatto con te.

11 Ed essa tornò a lui sulla sera, tenendo nel becco un ramoscello d'olivo con le foglie verdi. Allora Noè comprese che le acque erano scomparse dalla terra.
12 Nondimeno aspettò altri sette giorni: e rimandò fuori la colomba, che non tornò più a lui.
13 L'anno dunque secentesimo primo di Noè, nel primo mese, al primo dì del mese le acque lasciarono la terra.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Dal libro dei Dialoghi di san Gregario Papa
Cap. 33.
Scolastica, sorella dei venerabile padre Benedetto, consacratasi al Signore fin dalla sua più tenera infanzia, costumava di andare a visitare il fratello una volta l'anno; e l'uomo di Dio discendeva a riceverla in una proprietà del monastero non molto distante dalla sua residenza. Or un giorno essendo ella andata secondo l'usato, il venerabile suo fratello discese a lei con alquanti discepoli; e dopo aver passato tutto il giorno nelle lodi di Dio e in santi colloqui, sul calar delle tenebre della notte, presero insieme il pasto. Erano ancora seduti a mensa, ed essendosi protratta l'ora nei santi discorsi, la stessa santa donna sua sorella lo supplicò dicendo: Ti prego di non abbandonarmi questa notte, affinché parliamo fino al mattino delle gioie della vita celeste. Ma egli le rispose: «Che dici mai, o sorella? a nessun costo posso rimanere fuori dei monastero». Il cielo allora era così sereno, che non appariva nessuna nube nel cielo. La santa donna all'udire la risposta negativa del fratello, incrociate le dita delle mani le posò sulla mensa reclinandovi la testa nelle palme in preghiera al Signore onnipotente. Nel rialzare la testa dalla mensa, scoppiò tale violenza di lampi e tuoni, tale diluvio di pioggia, che né il venerabile Benedetto, né i fratelli ch'erano con lui poterono metter piede fuori della soglia del luogo dov'erano.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Per la verità, la mansuetudine e la giustizia,
* la tua destra ti guiderà mirabilmente.
℣. Col tuo splendore e con la tua bellezza, vieni, avanza lietamente e regna.

Lettura 5
La santa donna, reclinando la testa nelle mani, aveva versato sulla mensa un torrente di lacrime, onde aveva fatto succedere la pioggia alla serenità dell'aria. Né l'inondazione seguì molto dopo la preghiera; ma fu tanta la coincidenza della preghiera e dell'inondazione, che nell'alzar la testa dalla mensa già scoppiava il tuono; così che alzar la testa e cadere la pioggia fu quasi la stessa cosa. Allora l'uomo di Dio vedendo che i lampi e i tuoni e il diluvio di pioggia torrenziale non gli permettevano di ritornare al monastero, contristato cominciò a dolersene, dicendo: Dio onnipotente ti perdoni, sorella: che hai mai fatto! Ed ella gli rispose: Ecco, ti ho pregato, e non m'hai voluto dare ascolto; ho pregato il mio Dio, e m'ha ascoltato ora esci pure, se puoi; e, lasciatami, ritornatene al monastero. Ma egli non potendo uscire di casa, mentre prima non vi volle rimanere spontaneamente, poi vi rimase suo malgrado. E così avvenne, che passando tutta la notte vegliando e in santi colloqui di vita spirituale, si saziarono nello scambio vicendevole dei loro sentimenti.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

℟. Hai amato la giustizia ed hai odiato l'iniquità:
* perciò Dio, il tuo Dio, ti unse, con olio di letizia.

Lettura 6
Il giorno dopo la venerabile vergine se ne tornò al suo chiostro, e l'uomo di Dio al suo monastero. Di lì a tre giorni, essendo egli nella sua cella ed avendo alzati gli occhi al cielo, vide l'anima di sua sorella uscita dal corpo penetrare sotto forma d'una colomba le altezze misteriose dei cielo. Rapito di gioia per tanta gloria di lei, ne rese grazie a Dio onnipotente con cantici e lodi, e ne annunziò la morte ai confratelli. E li mandò subito a prenderne il corpo, perché lo portassero al monastero, e lo seppellissero nel sepolcro che aveva preparato per sé. Così avvenne, che, come le loro anime erano state sempre unite in Dio, così anche i loro corpi li riunisse una medesima tomba.

Omelia di s. Gregorio papa
Omelia 12 sui Vangeli.
Spesso vi raccomando, fratelli carissimi, di fuggire le opere cattive e di evitare la corruzione di questo mondo, ma quest'oggi la lettura del santo Vangelo mi costringe a dirvi di stare molto attenti a non perdere il merito delle vostre buone opere, a non cercare, nel bene che fate, il favore o la stima degli uomini, ad impedire
che si insinui in voi il desiderio della lode e ad agire in modo che, quanto appare di fuori, non sia dentro vuoto di ricompensa. Il Redentore infatti ci parla di dieci vergini, e le dice tutte vergini; eppure non tutte hanno meritato di essere ammesse al soggiorno della beatitudine, perché alcune di esse, mentre cercavano una gloria esteriore della loro verginità, non si curarono di mettere dell'olio nelle loro lampade.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Questa è una vergine saggia, che il Signore trovò vigilante: lei, con le lampade, prese con sé anche l'olio.
* E quando venne il Signore, entrò con lui alla festa nuziale.
℣. A mezzanotte si udì un clamore: Ecco, arriva lo sposo, uscitegli incontro.

Lettura 8
Ma prima dobbiamo chiederci che cosa sia il regno dei cieli, o perché lo si paragoni a dieci vergini, ed anche quali vengano dette vergini prudenti e quali vergini stolte. Mentre infatti è certo che nessun reprobo entrerà nel regno dei cieli, perché questo viene paragonato anche a delle vergini stolte? Dobbiamo sapere che spesso nel linguaggio sacro la Chiesa del tempo presente viene chiamata regno dei cieli. Onde altrove il Signore dice: «Il Figlio dell'uomo manderà i suoi angeli, e toglieranno dal suo regno tutti gli scandali». Certamente in quel regno di beatitudine, dove c'è la suprema pace, non si potranno trovare scandali da togliere.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. A mezzanotte si udì un clamore:
* Ecco, arriva lo sposo, uscitegli incontro.
℣. Vergini prudenti, preparate le vostre lampade.

Lettura 9
Ciascuno vive in un corpo che ha cinque sensi; il numero cinque poi, raddoppiato, dà dieci. E, poiché la moltitudine dei fedeli comprende ambedue i sessi, la santa Chiesa si dice simile a dieci vergini. E poiché in essa i cattivi si trovano mescolati coi buoni e i reprobi con gli eletti, giustamente viene paragonata a delle vergini prudenti ed anche a delle vergini stolte. Infatti ci sono molti che vivono nella continenza, che si guardano dagli appetiti esteriori, e dalla speranza sono portati ai beni interiori, che mortificano la propria carne, e anelano alla patria celeste con tutta la forza del loro desiderio, agognano i premi eterni, e non vogliono ricevere lodi umane per le loro fatiche. Questi certamente non ripongono la loro gloria nelle parole degli uomini, ma la nascondono nella loro coscienza. E ci sono poi molti che affliggono il loro corpo con l'astinenza, ma per questa stessa loro astinenza cercano gli applausi degli uomini.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

And there was a day when she came, as her custom was, and her worshipful brother went down to her, and his disciples with him. Then they passed the whole day together, praising God, and speaking one to the other of spiritual things. And when the night came, they brake bread together. And while they were yet at table, and conversed together on spiritual things, the hour was late. Then the holy woman his sister besought him, saying Leave me not, I pray thee, this night, but let us speak even until morning of the gladness of the eternal life. He answered her: What is it that thou sayest, my sister? I can by no means remain out of my cell. Now the firmament was so clear that there were no clouds in the sky. Then the holy nun, when she had heard the words of her brother, that he would not abide with her, clasped her hands on the table, and laid her face on her hands, and besought the Lord Almighty. And it came to pass that when she lifted up her head from the table, there were great thunderings and lightnings, and a flood of rain, insomuch that neither the worshipful Benedict nor the brethren that were with him could move as much as a foot over the threshold of the place where they sat.

Dearly beloved brethren oftentimes do I warn you to fly corrupt conversation, and to keep yourselves unspotted from the world. But the portion which is this day read from the Holy Gospel doth oblige me to say that even to these good things which ye do, ye must needs take all careful heed. Look ye well to it, that, when ye work righteousness, ye do it not as seeking the praise and admiration of men, for if the lust of praise do once creep in, that which seemeth so fair without, loseth its reward within. Behold how the Redeemer speaketh of these ten virgins. He calleth them all virgins, yet entered not all of them into the door of blessedness, for there were some of them who sought outwardly the honour of virginity, but would take no oil within their vessels with their lamps.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. This is one of those wise virgins, whom the Lord found watching, for when she took her lamp, she took oil with her.
* And when the Lord came, she went in with him to the marriage.

First of all, it is for us to ask What is the kingdom of Heaven? And wherefore shall the same be likened unto ten virgins, whereof, albeit five were wise, yet five were foolish For if the kingdom of heaven be such that there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie, Apoc. xxi. 27, how can it be like unto five virgins which were foolish? But we must know that, in the word of God, the kingdom of heaven doth oftentimes signify the Church as she now is, touching the which the Lord saith in another place “The Son of Man shall send forth His Angels, and they shall gather out of His kingdom all things that offend.” Matth. xiii. 41. In that kingdom of Blessedness, wherein peace shall have her perfect reign, there shall be nothing found that offendeth for the angels to gather out.

The body of every man doth consist of five senses, and five being doubled, is ten. Forasmuch, therefore, as the whole body of the faithful doth consist of two sexes, the Holy Church is likened unto ten virgins. And forasmuch as in the Church the good are for the present mingled with the bad, and the reprobate with the elect, it is rightly said that, of the ten virgins, five are wise and five are foolish. There are many who have self-control, which do keep themselves from lusting after things outward, whose hope beareth them to things inward, who chastise the flesh, who long with intense home-sickness for their Fatherland which is in heaven, who seek an eternal reward, and who will not to receive for their labours the praise of men. These are they who reckon their glory, not in the mouths of men, but in the testimony of their own conscience. And many there be likewise who afflict the body by self-control, and yet who seek for their self-control applause from men.

Martyrology {anticipated}
On the morrow we keep the feast of the holy Confessor Gilbert, founder of the Order of Sempringham, of whom mention hath been made upon the 4th day of this present month of February. Likewise on the morrow we keep the feast of the Seven holy Founders of the Order of Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who after great hardship of life, famous for works and wonders, died a death precious in the sight of the Lord, upon Monte Senario, in Tuscany. The same spirit of brotherhood had made them one in life, the veneration of the people had not divided them in death, and Leo XIII enrolled their names together among those of the Saints.
February 11th 2026, the 23rd day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

In Africa, [in the year 304,] the holy martyrs the Priest Saturninus, Dativus, Felix, Ampelius, and their Companions, who were taken by the soldiers in the persecution under the Emperor Diocletian when they came together in one, as the use is, to hold the Lord's Supper, and suffered under the proconsul Anolinus.
