Quattro anni dopo la definizione dommatica della immacolata Concezione della beata Vergine, sulla sponda del fiume Gave presso il borgo di Lourdes, delta diocesi di Tarbes in Francia, la stessa Vergine si fece vedere più volte nell'insenatura d'una roccia nella grotta di Massabielle a una fanciulla chiamata volgarmente Bernadetta, poverissima sì ma ingenua e pia. La Vergine immacolata appariva di aspetto giovane e benevolo, ricoperta d'una veste e d'un velo bianco come la neve, e cinta d'una fascia celeste; una rosa d'oro ne adornava i piedi. Il primo giorno dell'apparizione, che fu l'11 Febbraio dell'anno 1858, insegnò alla fanciulla a far bene e con pietà il segno della croce e, facendo scorrere nella mano la corona che prima le pendeva dal braccio, l'eccitò, col suo esempio, alla recita del santo rosario: cosa che ripeté pure nelle altre apparizioni. Ma il secondo giorno dell'apparizione, la fanciulla temendo, nella semplicità del suo cuore, un'insidia diabolica, gettò sulla Vergine dell'acqua benedetta; ma la beata Vergine, dolcemente sorridendo, le si mostrò con volto ancor più benevolo. Nella terza apparizione poi invitò la fanciulla alla grotta per quindici giorni. D'allora le parlò più spesso, e la esortò a pregare per i peccatori, a baciar la terra e a far penitenza; quindi le ordinò di dire ai sacerdoti che edificassero ivi una cappella, e di venirvi alla stessa guisa con solenni processioni. Di più le ordinò di bere dell'acqua della fonte, ch'era ancora nascosta sotto la sabbia ma sarebbe subito sgorgata, e di lavarsi con essa. Finalmente la festa dell'Annunziazione, domandando la fanciulla istantemente il nome di lei, che s'era degnata di apparirle tante volte, la Vergine, portate le mani sul petto ed alzati gli occhi al cielo, rispose: Io sono l'Immacolata Concezione.

℟. Chi è costei che si avanza come l'aurora che sorge,
* Bella come la luna, fulgida come il sole?

Crescendo la fama dei benefizi, che si asseriva aver ricevuto i fedeli nella grotta, aumentò ogni dì più il concorso degli uomini attirati alla grotta dalla venerazione del luogo. Ond'è che il vescovo di Tarbes mosso dalla fama dei prodigi e dal candore delta fanciulla, quattro anni dopo le cose narrate, dopo giuridica inquisizione dei fatti, riconobbe con sua sentenza, che i caratteri dell'apparizione erano soprannaturali, e permise nella stessa grotta il culto alla Vergine immacolata. Subito vi si edificò una cappella: da quel giorno sono quasi innumerevoli le folle di fedeli che vi accorrono ogni anno per ragione di voto e di supplica dalla Francia, dal Belgio, dall'Italia, dalla Spagna e da altre regioni d'Europa e fin dalle lontane Americhe, e il nome dell'Immacolata di Lourdes diviene celebre in tutto l'universo. L'acqua della fontana, portata in tutte le parti del mondo, rende la sanità agl'infermi. E l’orbe cattolico, riconoscente di tanti benefici, v'ha eretto intorno meravigliosi monumenti sacri. Innumerevoli vessilli, mandati là dalle città e popoli quali testimoni dei benefici ricevuti, formano al tempio della Vergine una decorazione meravigliosa. In questa sua quasi dimora la Vergine immacolata è venerata continuamente: di giorno con preghiere, canti religiosi e altre solenni funzioni; di notte invece con quelle sacre processioni nelle quali turbe pressoché infinite di pellegrini con ceri e torcie sfilano cantando le lodi della Vergine.

℟. Sarà apparecchiato negli ultimi tempi un monte alla Vergine Maria sulla vetta dei monti, e vi andranno molti popoli e diranno:

A tutti è noto come questi pellegrinaggi abbiano ravvivato la fede in questo secolo pieno di freddezza, abbiano incoraggiato a professare la legge cristiana, ed abbiano mirabilmente accresciuto il culto alla Vergine immacolata. Nella quale meravigliosa manifestazione di fede il popolo cristiano ha per duci i sacerdoti, che conducono là le loro popolazioni. Gli stessi vescovi si recano spesso a questo santuario, presiedono ai pellegrinaggi, e assistono alle feste più solenni. Né è troppo raro vedere accorrervi come umili pellegrini gli stessi principi della Chiesa Romana vestiti della porpora. A loro volta, i Romani Pontefici nella loro devozione verso l'Immacolata di Lourdes, arricchirono il sacro tempio di favori i più insigni. Pio IX l'onorò di sante indulgenze, del privilegio di un'arciconfraternita e del titolo di Basilica minore; e volle che la statua della Madre di Dio, che vi si venera, fosse incoronata con solenne rito dal suo nunzio apostolico in Francia. Leone XIII poi le conferì innumerevoli benefizi, concesse l'indulgenza in forma di giubileo nel venticinquesimo dell'Apparizione, incoraggiò colla sua autorità e parola i pellegrinaggi, e fece fare a nome suo la consacrazione solenne d'una Chiesa sotto il titolo del Rosario. E coronò la moltiplicità di questi privilegi concedendo benignamente, a preghiera di molti vescovi, di celebrare una festa solenne sotto il titolo dell'Apparizione della beata Vergine Maria immacolata con Ufficio proprio e Messa propria. Finalmente il sommo Pontefice Pio X nella sua pietà verso la Madre di Dio, e per assecondare i voti di molti vescovi, estese la stessa festa alla Chiesa universale.

Rallegrati, padre Adamo, ma tu soprattutto, madre Eva, esulta: come foste i progenitori di tutti, così di tutti foste pure la rovina; e, quel ch'è più deplorevole, prima rovina che progenitori. Consolatevi, la dico a tutti due, per questa figlia, e per tale figlia; ma principalmente a quella che fu la prima cagione del male, il cui obbrobrio s'è trasmesso a tutte le donne. Infatti si approssima il tempo in cui ormai sarà tolto l'obbrobrio, e l'uomo non avrà più di che accusare la donna: né cercando esso impudentemente di scusare se stesso, non dubitò di accusarla crudelmente, dicendo: «La donna, che m'hai data, m'ha dato del frutto, ed io l'ho mangiato» Gen. 3,12. O Eva, corri dunque a Maria; o madre, corri a tanta figlia; risponda la figlia per la madre; liberi lei la madre dall'obbrobrio; lei soddisfaccia al padre per la madre: perché se l'uomo è caduto per la donna, egli ora non si rialza che per la donna.

Che dicevi, o Adamo? «La donna che m'hai data, m'ha dato del frutto, e io l'ho mangiato» Gen. 3,2. Queste sono parole maliziose, colle quali aggravi anziché diminuire la tua colpa. Nondimeno la Sapienza ha vinto la malizia, perché ella ha trovato nel tesoro della sua inesauribile bontà quell'occasione di perdono che Dio, interrogandoti, cercò, ma non poté cavare da te. Infatti invece della prima donna ci è data un'altra donna, una prudente, invece di una stolta, una umile, invece di una superba; la quale invece d'un frutto di morte, ti dia a gustare un frutto di vita, e in cambio di quell'amaro e velenoso alimento, ti procuri la dolcezza d'un frutto eterno. Muta, dunque, le parole della stolta scusa in voci di azioni di grazie, e di': Signore, la donna che m'hai data m'ha dato del frutto (dell'albero) della vita, e io l'ho mangiato; ed esso è più dolce alla mia bocca del miele, perché per esso m'hai reso la vita. Ed ecco perché l'Angelo fu mandato alla Vergine ammirabile e d'ogni onore degnissima! O donna singolarmente veneranda, ammirabile più che tutte le donne, riparatrice dei tuoi progenitori, sorgente di vita per l'intera posterità!

Qual'altra donna ti sembra aver Dio preannunziato, quando disse al serpente: «Porrò inimicizia fra te e la donna» Gen. 3,15. E se dubiti ancora avere egli inteso di Maria, ascolta quel che segue «Ella ti schiaccerà la testa». A chi è riservata questa vittoria, se non a Maria? Ella senza dubbio ha schiacciato la testa velenosa, ella ha ridotto a niente ogni suggestione del maligno sia ch'esso tenti colla seduzione della carne o con l'orgoglio dello spirito. E qual altra cercava Salomone quando diceva «Chi troverà la donna forte?» Prov. 31,10. Conosceva infatti quest'uomo sapiente l'infermità di questo sesso, la fragilità del suo corpo, la volubilità del suo spirito. Ma siccome egli aveva letto la promessa fatta da Dio, e gli pareva conveniente che colui che aveva vinto per una donna fosse vinto per mezzo di essa, sommamente meravigliato, esclamava: «Chi troverà la donna forte?». Ch'è quanto dire: Se dalla mano d'una donna dipende così e la nostra comune salvezza e la restituzione dell'innocenza, e la vittoria sul nemico; è assolutamente necessario di trovare una donna forte che possa essere capace di tanta opera.

In the fourth year from the dogmatic definition of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin, at the bank of the river Gave near the town of Lourdes of the diocese of Tarbes in France, the Virgin herself in a bend of the rock above the grotto of Massabiele, often shewed herself to a certain girl, called in the vernacular tongue Bernadette, indeed most poor but noble and pious, to be seen. The Immaculate Virgin appeared with a young and kind appearance, clothed with a white garment and white veil, and girt with a blue girdle; she adorned her bare feet with a golden rose. On the first day of the apparition, which was the eleventh of February in the one thousand eight hundred fifty-eighth year, she taught the girl the sign of the cross to be duly and piously made, and she incited her, by her example, to the recitation of the sacred rosary, turning over with her hand the chaplet, which before was hanging down from her arm: which she supplied also in the other apparitions. And on the second day of the apparition, the girl in the simplicity of her heart, fearing diabolic fraud, flung holy water on the Virgin; but the blessed Virgin, smiling gently, shewed her face more kindly to her. And when she appeared a third time, she invited the girl to the grotto for fifteen days. Thence she often addressed her; then commanded, that it might be declared to the priests, a chapel to be built there, and to be approached there for supplications in a manner of solemnity. Moreover she commanded that from the spring, which thus far was hidden under the sand but now was about to erupt, she might drink the water, and by it cleanse herself. Finally on the feast day of the Annunciation, to the girl earnestly inquiring her name, the Virgin, for whose appearance she was so often deemed worthy, the Virgin, her hands having been moved to her breast and her eyes raised to heaven, answered: I am the Immaculate Conception.

The fame of favours becoming widespread, which the faithful were said to have received in the sacred grotto, in time the assembly of men increased, whom the sanctity of the place called to the grotto. Therefore the bishop of Tarbes moved by the fame of the wonders and the purity of the girl, after a juridical inquiry of the happenings, approved by his decree the signs of the apparition to be supernatural, and permitted the worship of the immaculate Virgin in the same grotto. Soon a chapel is built: from that day the almost innumerable crowds of the faithful, for the purpose of prayer and supplication, from France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, and the other provinces of Europe and also from the remote regions of America arrived there in every year, and the name of the Immaculate of Lourdes becometh famous of countries everywhere. The water of the spring, having been carried into all parts of the world, restored health to the sick. And the Catholic world mindful of such great favours, built holy shrines there with wonderful work. Innumerable banners, as if monuments of received benefits, sent there by cities and nations, decorate the shrine of the Virgin with wonderful adornment. In this as if her own seat the immaculate Virgin is continually honoured: indeed by day with prayers, religious chant and other solemn ceremonies; and by night with those solemn supplications, by which the almost infinite crowds of pilgrims proceed with candles and lit torches and sing the praises of the blessed Virgin.

It is known by all for certain the pilgrimages of this sort to have stirred up faith, in a world becoming cold, the soul to have increased to profess the Christian law, and to have spread the worship of the immaculate Virgin in a wonderful manner. In which wonderful profession of faith the Christian people have the priests as leaders, who lead their people thence. The holy Bishops themselves also frequently visit the holy place, lead pilgrimages, and take part in more solemn feasts. Nor indeed is it rare to observe these empurpled fathers of the Roman Church approaching humble in the manner of pilgrims. Even these Roman Pontiffs, for their piety towards the Immaculate of Lourdes, enhanced the sacred shrine with most noble gifts. Pius the ninth, with sacred indulgences, distinguished it with the privilege of an archconfraternity and title of a minor Basilica; and willed the image honoured there of the Godbearer, with solemn rite through his apostolic legate in France, to be adorned with a crown. And Leo the thirteenth also conferred innumerable benefits, granted indulgences in the manner of a jubilee in the twenty-fifth year of the Apparition occurring, promoted pilgrimages by his authority and word, and arranged to complete by his name the solemn dedication of the Church under the title of the Rosary. He accumulated the extent of which benefits, when, with the asking of many bishops, he kindly granted a solemn feast to be celebrated under the title of the Apparition of the blessed Virgin Mary immaculate with a proper Office and proper Mass. Finally supreme Pontiff Pius the tenth for his piety towards the Godbearer, and agreeing to the wishes of many holy Bishops, extended the same feast to the universal Church.
