Al secolo XIII, allorché le contrade più fiorenti d'Italia erano divise dallo scisma funesto di Federico II e da crudeli fazioni, la provvidenza misericordiosa di Dio suscitò, fra gli altri uomini illustri per santità, sette nobili Fiorentini, i quali, uniti nella carità, offrissero uno splendido esempio d'amor fraterno. Questi, vale a dire Bonfiglio Monaldi, Bonagiunta Manetti, Manetto Antellense, Amideo degli Amidei, Uguccione degli Uguccioni, Sosteneo dei Sostenei e Alessio dei Falconieri, il dì dell'Assunzione della Vergine dell'anno 1233, mentre pregavano con maggior fervore nella radunanza d'una pia confraternita chiamata dei Laudanti, apparve a ognuno di essi la stessa Madre di Dio, invitandoli ad abbracciare un genere di vita più santo e più perfetto. Preso pertanto prima consiglio dell'arcivescovo di Firenze, questi sette uomini rinunziando alla nobiltà e alle ricchezze del casato, portando un cilizio sotto vesti poverissime e usate, si ritirarono l'8 di Settembre in un'umile casetta di campagna per inaugurarvi il principio d'una vita più santa il giorno stesso in cui la Madre di Dio aveva cominciato la sua vita santissima in mezzo ai mortali.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore lo fece ricco, lo guardò dai nemici e lo protesse da coloro che lo insidiavano
* e gli procurò eterna gloria.

Lettura 5
Dio mostrò con un miracolo quanto gli fosse accetto questo tenore di vita. Poiché poco dopo questi sette uomini domandando elemosina alle porte delle case per la città di Firenze, avvenne che d'un tratto furono acclamati Servi della beata Maria dalla voce di bambini, tra cui ci fu san Filippo Benizi di poco più di quattro mesi di età nome col quale furono poi sempre chiamati. Quindi ad evitare concorso di popolo e presi dall'amore della solitudine, si ritirarono tutti nella solitudine del monte Senario, dove intrapresero un genere di vita veramente celeste. Infatti abitavano in caverne, contenti di sola acqua e di erbe; mortificavano il corpo con veglie ed altre austerità, e meditavano continuamente la passione di Cristo e i dolori della sua afflittissima Madre. Applicandosi una volta a ciò con più ardore il Venerdì Santo, apparve loro a più riprese la stessa beata Vergine, mostrando l'abito lugubre che dovevano vestire; e fece conoscere che le sarebbe graditissimo se fondassero nella Chiesa un nuovo ordine religioso, il quale ricordasse continuamente e promovesse la memoria dei dolori ch'ella soffrì sotto la croce del Signore. San Pietro, illustre Martire dell'ordine dei Predicatori, avendo appreso queste cose dalla relazione famigliare che aveva con quei santi uomini e anche da una particolare rivelazione della Madre di Dio, li indusse a fondare un ordine religioso sotto il nome di Servi della beata Vergine: ordine che fu poi approvato dal sommo Pontefice Innocenzo IV.

℟. Il Signore l'ha amato ed onorato: l'ha rivestito con un manto di gloria,
* e l'ha incoronato alle porte del paradiso.

Pertanto quei santi uomini, cui s'erano uniti numerosi compagni, cominciarono a percorrere le città e borgate d'Italia, principalmente della Toscana, ovunque predicando Cristo crocifisso, calmando le civili discordie e richiamando sul sentiero della virtù presso che innumerevoli traviati. Né solo l'Italia, ma la Francia altresì, la Germania e la Polonia furono oggetto delle loro fatiche evangeliche. In fine dopo aver sparso in lungo e in largo il buon odore di Cristo, e di essersi resi ancora illustri in portenti, se ne volarono al Signore. Ma come la vera fratellanza e la religione li aveva riuniti in vita in un solo e medesimo amore, così dopo morte li racchiuse una stessa tomba, ed ebbero una stessa venerazione nel popolo. Quindi Clemente XI e Benedetto XIII, sommi Pontefici, confermarono il culto reso loro costantemente da più secoli; e Leone XIII, dopo averne approvati i miracoli operati da Dio per loro intercessione e, dopo averli dichiarati venerabili, ebbe permesso di invocarli in comune, nel cinquantesimo anno del suo sacerdozio li arricchì degli onori dei Santi, e stabilì che ogni anno se ne celebrasse la memoria in tutta la Chiesa con Ufficio e Messa.

Grande fiducia! Pietro era pescatore, non era mai stato ricco, si guadagnava il cibo col lavoro delle mani; e tuttavia dice con gran sicurezza: «Abbiamo abbandonato tutto». E siccome non basta solo abbandonare, aggiunge ciò che è perfetto: «E ti abbiamo seguito». Abbiamo fatto quello che hai comandato: che cosa ci darai dunque per ricompensa? E Gesù disse loro : «In verità vi dico: voi che mi avete seguito, quando nella rigenerazione il Figlio dell'uomo siederà sul trono della sua maestà, siederete anche voi su dodici troni a giudicare le dodici tribù d'Israele». Non disse: Voi che avete lasciato ogni cosa, poiché questo lo fece anche il filosofo Crates, e molti altri disprezzarono le ricchezze, ma disse: «Voi che mi avete seguito»; il che è proprio degli apostoli e dei credenti.

«Nella rigenerazione, quando il Figlio dell'uomo si sarà assiso sul trono della sua maestà - quando anche i morti risorgeranno incorrotti dalla corruzione - siederete anche voi sui seggi dei giudici a condannare le dodici tribù Israele», perché, mentre voi credeste, esse non vollero credere. «E chi avrà lasciato la casa, o i fratelli, o le sorelle, o il padre, o la madre, o la moglie, o i figli, o i campi per amor del mio nome, riceverà il centuplo e possederà la vita eterna». Questo passo è in armonia con l'altra affermazione del Salvatore che dice: «Non sono venuto a portare la pace, ma la spada. Perché sono venuto a dividere il figlio dal padre suo, e la figlia dalla madre, e la nuora dalla suocera; e l'uomo avrà per nemici quelli di casa». Da questa affermazione alcuni prendono occasione per sostenere che dopo la risurrezione ci sarà un periodo di mille anni nel quale, dicono, riceveremo il centuplo di tutto ciò che abbiamo lasciato e poi la vita eterna; non comprendendo che, se per tutte le altre cose la ricompensa è conveniente, per quanto riguarda la moglie, sarebbe una vergogna che colui che ne ha lasciata una per il Signore in futuro ne ricevesse cento. Questo dunque è il significato: chi avrà abbandonato per il Salvatore i beni carnali, ne riacquisterà di spirituali; e paragonare il valore di questi a quello dei primi, sarà come paragonare il numero cento ad un piccolo numero.

In the thirteenth century, when the more cultured parts of Italy were rent by the dread dissension of the Emperor Frederick the Second and by bloody civil wars, the mercy of God set forth diverse men eminent for holiness, and among others raised up seven nobles of Florence, who were bound one to another in charity and gave an illustrious example of brotherly love. Their names were Bonfiglio Monaldi, Bonajuncta Manetti, Manetto Antalli, Amadeo de' Amidei, Uguccio de' Uguccioni, Sosteneo de' Sostenei, and Alexis de' Falconieri. Upon the holiday of the Assumption of the Virgin into heaven in the year
1233 They were praying in the oratory of a guild called the Guild of Praise, when the same Mother of God appeared to each one of them, and bade them embrace a life of greater holiness and perfection. These seven men discussed the matter with the Bishop of Florence, and then, considering neither the nobility of their birth nor their wealth, and clad in haircloth under vile and worn - out garments, withdrew into a little house in the country upon the th day of September, that they might begin their holier life upon the same day whereon the Mother of God herself had by her birth begun her life of holiness upon earth.

She showed by a miracle how acceptable in His sight should be their manner of life, for a short while after, when these seven men were begging alms from door to door through the city of Florence, it came to pass that some children, among whom was holy Philip Benizi, who had then scarcely entered the fifth month of his age, called them blessed Mary's servants, by the which name they were called ever after. To avoid meeting people, and in the desire to be alone, they all withdrew together to the solitude of Monte Senario, and there began a kind of heavenly life. They lived in caves and upon herbs and water only, while they wore out their bodies with watching and other hardships, while they contemplated unweariedly the sufferings of Christ and the woes of His most sorrowful Mother. One Good Friday, when their thoughts were fixed thereon more than ever, the Blessed Virgin appeared to them twice, and showed them her garments of mourning as those wherein they should clothe themselves. She bade them know that she would take it right well that they should raise up in the Church a new order to recall the memory of the sorrows which she bore beneath the Cross of the Lord. Holy Peter, the illustrious martyr of the Order of Friars Preachers, learnt this not only from his familiar converse with these holy men, but also from a special vision of the Mother of God, and it was on his incitement that they founded the regular Order called that of the Servites, or servants of the Blessed Virgin, the which Order was afterward approved by the Supreme Pontiff Innocent IV.

These holy men, when they had gathered to themselves some companions, began to go through the cities and towns of Italy, and especially of Tuscany, everywhere preaching Christ crucified, stilling contests among the citizens, and calling back almost countless backsliders into the path of grace. Neither did they make Italy only the field of their Gospel labours, but also France, Germany, and Poland. They passed away to be ever with the Lord when they had spread far and wide a sweet savour of Christ, and were famous also for the glory of signs and wonders. As one love of brotherhood and of the monastic life had joined them together upon earth, so one grave held their dead bodies, and one honour was paid them by the people. For this reason the Supreme Pontiffs Clement XI. and Benedict XIII. confirmed the honour whicfl had for centuries been paid to them individually, and Leo XIII., after proof of their miracles which had been wrought by God on the common invocation of these saints, after their veneration had been sanctioned in the jubilee year of his priesthood, decreed to them the honours paid to Saints, and ordered that their memory should every year be kept throughout the universal Church with an office and Mass.
