Abramo fu certo uomo sì grande e sì illustre per lo splendore di molte virtù, che la filosofia non poté mai uguagliar co' suoi voti. Di più ciò che questa ha immaginato, resta al disotto di ciò ch'egli ha fatto: e la semplice testimonianza della verità sorpassa le vane e ambiziose finzioni dell'eloquenza. Consideriamo pertanto quale fu la pietà di quest'uomo. Siccome questa virtù occupa il primo posto, essendo il fondamento delle altre, giustamente Dio la esige da lui, dicendo: «Parti dalla tua terra, e dalla tua parentela, e dalla casa di tuo padre» Gen. 12,1. Sarebbe bastato dire: «Dalla tua terra ». Perché in ciò c'è il partire dalla parentela, il partire dalla casa paterna.

I1 nostro Redentore prevedendo che gli animi dei suoi discepoli si sarebbero turbati per la sua passione, predisse loro molto prima e le sofferenze di questa stessa passione, e la gloria della sua risurrezione: affinché quando lo vedessero morire, com'egli aveva annunziato, non dubitassero che non dovesse anche risorgere. Ma perché i discepoli, ancora carnali, non potevano in alcun modo intendere le parole di questo mistero, egli ricorse a un miracolo. Dinanzi ai loro occhi un cieco riacquista la vista: affinché lo spettacolo delle opere divine rafforzasse la fede di coloro che non intendevano l'annunzio di un mistero celeste.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Sono giunto oggi alla fontana dell'acqua, ed ho pregato il Signore dicendo:

Ma i miracoli del Signore e Salvator nostro, fratelli carissimi, dobbiamo accoglierli così che e li crediamo avvenuti realmente, e che ci vogliono insinuare qualche verità col loro significato. Giacché le sue opere colla potenza mostrano una cosa, e col mistero che contengono ne dicono un'altra. Difatti, secondo la verità storica, noi ignoriamo chi fosse questo cieco: ma ben sappiamo cosa significa allegoricamente. Questo cieco è certamente il genere umano, che, espulso nella persona del nostro primo padre dalle gioie del paradiso, ignorando lo splendore della luce superna, soffre le tenebre della sua condanna. Ma egli è illuminato, grazie alla presenza del suo Redentore, così da vedere già col desiderio le gioie della luce interiore, e dirigere i suoi passi nella via d'una vita santificata dalle buone opere.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Il Signore parlò ad Abramo, e gli disse:

È però da notare che si dice che il cieco riceve la vista quando Gesù si avvicina a Gerico. Gerico infatti significa luna: ora la luna nelle sacre scritture è considerata come immagine della debolezza della carne: perché decrescendo tutti i mesi, indica la debolezza del nostro corpo mortale. Mentre dunque il nostro Creatore si avvicina a Gerico, il cieco riacquista la vista: perché allorquando la divinità assunse la debole nostra carne, il genere umano ricevé quella luce che aveva perduta. Per il fatto invero che Dio si assoggettò a ciò ch'è umano, ne venne che l'uomo fu sollevato a ciò ch'è divino. E giustamente ci vien descritto questo cieco a sedere sulla via, accattando. Perché la stessa Verità dice: «Io sono la via» Joan. 14,6.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Un cieco sedeva sulla strada, mentre passava il Signore, e gridò a lui: e il Signore gli disse :

But, since His disciples were yet carnal, and could not receive the words telling of this mystery, He wrought a miracle before them. A blind man received his sight before their eyes, that if they could not receive heavenly things by words, they might be persuaded of heavenly things by deeds.

Mankind is blind, driven out from Eden in the persons of his first parents, knowing not the light of heaven, and suffering the darkness of condemnation. But, nevertheless, through the coming of his Redeemer, he is enlightened, so that now he seeth by hope already the gladness of inward light, and walketh by good works in the path of life.

One must note that as Jesus drew to Jericho a blind man received his sight. Now, this name Jericho, being interpreted, signifieth the city of the moon and in Holy Scripture the moon is used as a figure of our imperfect flesh, of whose gradual corruption her monthly waning is a type. As, therefore, our Maker draweth nigh to Jericho, a blind man receiveth his sight. While the Godhead taketh. into itself our weak manhood, man receiveth again the light which he had lost. By God's suffering in the Manhood, man is raised up toward God. This blind man is also well described as sitting by the wayside begging, for the Truth saith: “I am the Way.” John XIV, 6.

Martirologio {anticipated}

A Roma il beato Onésimo, ricordato da san Pàolo Apostolo nella lettera a Filémone. San Paolo lo ordinò, dopo san Timoteo, Vescovo di Efeso, e gli affidò la predicazione della parola di Dio. Lo stesso Onésimo poi, condotto legato a Roma e lapidato per la fede di Cristo, prima fu ivi sepolto, poi il suo corpo fu trasportato nel luogo dove era stato ordinato Vescovo.
In Egitto san Giuliàno Martire, con altri cinquemila.
A Cesarèa, in Palestina, i santi Martiri Egiziani Elia, Geremia, Isaia, Samuéle e Daniéle, i quali, avendo spontaneamente servito ai Confessori condannati in Cilicia alle miniere, mentre se ne ritornavano, furono presi, e dal Preside Firmiliàno, sotto l'Imperatore Galério Massimiàno, crudelissimamente tormentati, alla fine furono uccisi colla spada. Dopo di essi san Porfirio, servo del Martire Pànfilo, e san Seléuco di Cappadócia, dopo aver superato varie prove, di nuovo tormentati, ricevettero la corona del martirio, il primo col fuoco, il secondo colla spada.
A Nicomédia santa Giuliana, Vergine e Martire, la quale, sotto l'Imperatore Massimiàno, prima gravemente battuta da Africàno suo padre, quindi in vari modi tormentata dal Prefetto Evilàsio, col quale aveva ricusato di maritarsi, e poi gettata in carcere, combattè apertamente col demonio e finalmente, avendo superato le fiamme ed una caldaia bollente, compì il martirio con la decapitazione. Il suo corpo fu poi trasportato a Cuma, in Campània.

Martyrology {anticipated}
February 16th 2026, the 28th day of the Moon, were born into the better life:

Blessed Onesimus, of whom the holy Apostle Paul writeth unto Philemon, and whom also he ordained Bishop of Ephesus after holy Timothy, and committed unto him the preaching of the Word. In the end he was brought to Rome in chains, and there stoned to death for Christ's faith's sake. His body was first buried there, but was thence taken to the place where he had been ordained bishop.
On the same day is commemorated at Camee in Campania the translation of the holy Virgin and martyr Juliana.
At Nicomedia, under the Emperor Maximian, she was cruelly beaten by her own father Africanus, then put to diverse torments by the Prefect Evilasius, whom she refused to marry, and afterwards cast into prison, where she fought visibly with the devil she overcame fire and boiling water, and at length finished her martyrdom by being beheaded, [in the year 299.]

At Arezzo, in Tuscany, [in the year 1276,] the blessed Pope Gregory X he was a man of Piacenza, and was raised to the Supreme Pontificate from the arch-deaconry [of Liege.]
He held the Second Council of Lyon, received the Greeks into the unity of the faith, healed the dissensions of Christendom, set forward the recovery of the Holy Land, and governed the Church in holiness.
At Brescia, [in the year 350,] the holy Confessor Faustinus, Bishop of that see.
