Omelia di sant'Agostino Vescovo
Libr. 2 sul Sermone del Signore sul monte, cap. 12, tomo 4
È chiaro che questi precetti tendono a dirigere tutta la nostra intenzione alle gioie interne; affinché, cercando la nostra ricompensa di fuori, non veniamo a conformarci al mondo e a perdere la promessa d'una felicità tanto più solida e sicura quanto è più intima, e colla quale «Dio ci ha scelti ad esser conformi alla immagine del Figlio suo» Rom. 8,29. Qui poi è da rilevare in modo speciale che ci può essere della vanità non solo nello splendore e nel lusso delle cose del corpo, ma anche nel vestire trascurato in segno di lutto; vanità tanto più pericolosa in quanto che inganna sotto il nome di pietà verso Dio.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Sono giunto oggi alla fontana dell'acqua, ed ho pregato il Signore dicendo:
* Signore, Dio di Abramo, tu hai assecondato il mio desiderio.

Lettura 2
Colui pertanto che cerca di comparire con una cura smodata del corpo o con troppo lusso nelle vesti o nelle altre cose, con ciò stesso è facilmente convinto d'essere seguace delle pompe del secolo, e non ingannerà nessuno con una falsa apparenza di santità. Colui invece che nella professione di cristiano attira sopra di sé gli sguardi del pubblico per la sua negligenza e sudiceria, e fa ciò non per necessità ma volontariamente, dalle altre sue opere si potrà arguire se lo fa o per disprezzo d'un lusso superfluo, o per qualche motivo d'ostentazione: ond'è che il Signore raccomanda di guardarci dai lupi che si nascondono anche sotto pelle di pecora, dicendo: «Ma li riconoscerete dai loro frutti» Matth. 7,20.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Lettura 3
Poiché quando certe prove cominceranno a sottrarre o a negar loro quelle stesse cose che con siffatta veste o hanno conseguito o si ripromettono di conseguire; allora necessariamente apparirà se sia un lupo sotto pelle di pecora o una pecora nella sua pelle. Il Cristiano pertanto non deve attirarsi gli sguardi degli uomini con ornamenti superflui per il motivo che spesso gl'ipocriti si coprono di questo esteriore austero e povero per ingannare gl'incauti: le stesse pecore non devono spogliarsi della loro pelle perché qualche volta se ne rivestono i lupi.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

It is evident that by these precepts we are bidden to seek for inner gladness, lest, by running after that reward which is without, we should become conformed to the fashion of this world, and should so lose the promise of that blessing which is all the truer and more stable that it is inward, that blessing wherein God hath chosen us to be conformed to the likeness of His Son. In this chapter we will principally consider the fact that vain-glory findeth a ground for its exercise in struggling poverty as much as in worldly distinction and display; and this development is the most dangerous, because it entices under pretence of being the serving of God.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

℟. I came this day unto the well, and I besought the Lord, and said:

He that is characterised by unbridled indulgence in luxury or in dress, or any other display, is by these very things easily shown to be a follower of worldly vanities, and deceiveth no one by putting on an hypocritical mask of godliness. But those professors of Christianity, who turn all eyes on themselves by an eccentric show of grovelling and dirtiness, not suffered by necessity, but by their own choice, of them we must judge by their other works whether their conduct really proceedeth from the desire of mortification by giving up unnecessary comfort, or is only the mean of some ambition the Lord biddeth us beware of wolves in sheep's clothing, but by their fruits, saith He, ye shall know them.

The test is when, by diverse trials, such persons lose those things which under the cover of seeming unworldliness they have either gained or sought to gain.
