Vediamo se Matteo e Luca convengano intorno al racconto di questo servo del centurione. Perché Matteo dice: «Gli si presentò un centurione, e lo pregava, dicendo: Il mio servo giace in casa paralizzato» Matth. 8,5. Al che sembra contraddire quanto riferisce Luca: «E sentito parlare di Gesù, mandò da lui gli anziani dei Giudei a pregarlo che andasse a guarire il suo servo. Questi dunque, andati a Gesù, lo pregavano istantemente dicendogli: Egli merita che tu gli faccia questo: perché ama la nostra nazione e ci ha fabbricato lui stesso la sinagoga. Gesù pertanto andò con loro: e, quando ormai non era lontano dalla casa, il centurione mandò degli amici a dirgli: Signore, non ti disturbare: io non son proprio degno che tu entri sotto il mio tetto» Luc. 7,3-4.

Ché se veramente la cosa andò così, come ammettere la verità del racconto di Matteo: «Gli si presentò un centurione», quando non gli si presentò lui, ma mandò degli amici, se non dopo attenta osservazione che ci farà comprendere Matteo non aver qui lasciato affatto di usare una maniera di parlare assai ordinaria? Perché non solo noi sogliamo dire che uno è andato da un altro anche prima d'esser giunto là dove si dice d'essere andato: onde così diciamo: È andato poco lontano, o molto lontano secondo la mèta che si vuol raggiungere: ma diciamo ancora spesso che si è andati da uno al quale si desidera d'arrivare, ancorché, chi ci è arrivato, non veda colui al quale è arrivato, dacché per mezzo d'un amico è arrivato presso quegli che ha interesse di vedere. Questa maniera di parlare è talmente passata in uso, che si dà volgarmente il nome di arrivisti a coloro che, coll'aiuto di raggiri ambiziosi, agiscono sull'animo di certi personaggi potenti per interposizione di quelli che hanno presso di essi più facile accesso.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Questa maniera di parlare è talmente passata in uso, che si dà volgarmente il nome di arrivisti a coloro che, coll'aiuto di raggiri ambiziosi, agiscono sull'animo di certi personaggi potenti per interposizione di quelli che hanno presso di essi più facile accesso.
