Prædicatúrus vobis, dilectíssimi, sacratíssimum maximúmque jejúnium, quo áptius utar exórdio, quam ut verbis Apóstoli, in quo Christus loquebátur, incípiam, dicámque quod lectum est: Ecce nunc tempus acceptábile: ecce nunc dies salútis? Quamvis enim nulla sint témpora, quæ divínis non sint plena munéribus, et semper nobis ad misericórdiam Dei per ipsíus grátiam præstétur accéssus: nunc tamen ómnium mentes majóri stúdio ad spiritáles proféctus movéri, et amplióri fidúcia opórtet animári, quando ad univérsa pietátis offícia, illíus nos diéi, in quo redémpti sumus, recúrsus invítat: ut excéllens super ómnia passiónis Domínicæ sacraméntum, purificátis et corpóribus et ánimis celebrémus.

Dovendo parlarvi, o dilettissimi, del più grande e sacro fra i digiuni, potrei servirmi di migliore esordio, che incominciare colle parole dell'Apostolo, nel quale parlava Cristo, ripetendovi ciò che è stato letto: «Ecco il tempo favorevole, ecco il giorno della salvezza?» 2Cor. 6,4. E sebbene non ci sia tempo che non sia ricco dei doni divini, e noi troviamo sempre accesso, per sua grazia, presso la misericordia di Dio, tuttavia è necessario che gli animi di tutti si eccitino con maggiore zelo ai progressi spirituali, e che siano animati d'una maggior fiducia, ora che la ricorrenza di quel giorno medesimo, in cui siamo stati redenti, ci invita a compiere tutti i doveri della pietà cristiana: affinché, purificati nell'anima e nel corpo, celebriamo il mistero, il più sublime di tutti, della passione del Signore.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Emendiamo in meglio gli errori commessi per ignoranza: onde, sorpresi improvvisamente dal dì della morte, non cerchiamo tempo per far penitenza senza poterlo trovare:

Ma siccome questa forza d'animo è di pochi; e da una parte per la debolezza della carne si rilassa anche l'osservanza più rigida, e dall'altra le diverse occupazioni di questa vita assorbono la nostra sollecitudine, avviene necessariamente, che anche i cuori religiosi rimangono lordati dalla polvere del mondo; fu provvista con grande utilità nostra questa istituzione divina, affinché questi esercizi di quaranta giorni ci aiutassero a ricuperare la purezza dell'anima, riscattando con pie opere e con casti digiuni i falli degli altri tempi dell'anno.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

Alcuni si domandano da quale spirito Gesù fu condotto nel deserto, e rimangono incerti a motivo di quello che si soggiunge: «Il diavolo lo trasportò nella città santa» Matth. 4,51; e poi: «Lo trasportò sopra un monte molto elevato» Matth. 4,8. Ma l'opinione ragionevole e conveniente senza motivo di dubitarne, si è di credere, ch'egli fu condotto nel deserto dallo Spirito Santo: affinché il suo Spirito lo conducesse là dove lo spirito maligno doveva trovarlo per tentarlo. Ma ecco, quando si dice che l'uomo-Dio fu trasportato dal diavolo sopra un monte molto elevato, o nella città santa, la mente rifugge dal crederlo, e le orecchie umane si spaventano in udirlo. Però se riflettiamo che ben altre cose avvennero in lui, conosceremo non essere ciò incredibile.

Qual meraviglia dunque, se permise d'essere trasportato sul monte, egli che sopportò d'essere ancora crocefisso dalle membra di lui? Non è dunque indegno per il nostro Redentore l'aver voluto essere tentato, egli che era venuto per essere ucciso. Era anzi giusto ch'egli vincesse così colle sue tentazioni le nostre tentazioni, come era venuto per trionfare della morte nostra colla sua morte.

Ma si deve sapere che ci sono tre gradi nella tentazione: la suggestione, la dilettazione e il consenso. E noi quando siamo tentati, per lo più cadiamo nella dilettazione o anche nel consenso: perché, formati di carne e nati nel peccato, anche in noi stessi portiamo i nemici di cui dobbiamo sostenere gli attacchi. Iddio invece che, incarnatosi nel seno della Vergine, era venuto al mondo senza peccato, non portava in se stesso alcun principio di contradizione. Poté quindi essere tentato per suggestione, ma giammai la compiacenza del peccato penetrò nell'anima sua. E perciò tutta quella diabolica tentazione fu esterna, non interna.

Mysteries so great demand sustained earnestness, and continuous worship, if we would ever abide in the sight of God, such as it is meet that He should find us on the Feast of the Passover. To meet this befoulment therefore, and to restore the cleanness of our souls, it is provided by the healthful institution of God, that we should be purged by an exercise of forty days, wherein godly works may redeem the mis-spending of our other time, and purifying fasts rid us of the same.

Some persons are accustomed to question what Spirit it was of which Jesus was led up into the wilderness, on account of the words a little farther on Then the devil taketh Him up into the holy city and again The devil taketh Him up into an exceeding high mountain. But in truth, and without any searching, we may very fitly take it that we are to believe it was the Holy Ghost Who led Him up into the wilderness; His own Spirit led Him where the evil spirit found Him to tempt Him. When however it is said that He, God and man, was taken up by the devil either into an exceeding high mountain or into the holy city, the mind shrinketh from believing, and the ears of man tingle to hear it. Yet these things we know not to be incredible, when we consider certain other things concerning Him.

We ought to know that temptation worketh through three forms. There is, first, the suggestion; then the delectation; lastly, the consent. When we are tempted, it often happeneth that we fall into delectation, and even into consent, because in the sinful flesh of which we are begotten, we carry in ourselves matter to favor the attack. But God, when He took Flesh in the womb of the Virgin, and came into the world without sin, did so without having in Himself anything of this lusting of the flesh against the spirit. It was possible therefore for Him to be tempted in the first stage, namely suggestion; but there was nothing in His Mind in which delectation could fix its teeth. Nell'anno bisestile si omette : La Vigilia di san Mattia Apostolo; perché si trasferisce nel giorno seguente, che è il 24.
La Vigilia di san Mattia Apostolo.
San Pier Damiàni, dell'Ordine dei Camaldolesi, Cardinale e Vescovo di Ostia, Confessore e Dottore della Chiesa, il quale nel giorno precedente volò al cielo.
A Smirne il natale di san Policàrpo, discepolo del beato Giovanni Apostolo e da lui stesso ordinato Vescovo di quella città: fu il personaggio più illustre di tutta l'Asia. Sotto Marco Antonino e Lucio Aurélio Cómmodo, in presenza del Proconsole, mentre tutto il popolo nell'anfiteatro a gran voce gridava contro di lui, fu dato al fuoco, e non restando punto offeso dalle fiamme, trafitto dalla spada, ricevette la corona del martirio. Con lui furono pure martirizzati nella stessa città di Smirne altri dodici, che erano venuti da Filadélfia. La festa di Policarpo si celebra il ventisei Gennaio.
Presso Sirmio il beato Siréno, Monaco e Martire, il quale fu preso per ordine dell'Imperatore Massimiano, e, avendo confessato di essere Cristiano, fu decapitato.
Nello stesso luogo il natale di settantadue santi Martiri, i quali, compiendo nella predetta città il combattimento del martirio, si guadagnarono il regno eterno.
Nella città di Astèrga, nella Spagna, santa Marta, Vergine e Martire, che, sotto l'Imperatore Décio ed il Proconsole Patèrno, per la fede di Cristo fu crudelmente tormentata e finalmente uccisa con la spada.
A Costantinopoli san Làzzaro Monaco, il quale, dipingendo immagini sacre, fu, per ordine dell'Imperatore Teófilo iconoclasta, tormentato con atroci supplizi, e con un ferro rovente gli fu bruciata la mano; ma, risanato per divina virtù, ridipinse le sacre immagini, che erano state raschiate, e finalmente si riposò in pace.
