Pietro, nato a Ravenna da genitori ragguardevoli, era ancora lattante quando fu rigettato dalla madre malcontenta di avere prole numerosa; ma una domestica raccoltolo mezzo morto e salvatolo, lo rese poi alla madre dopo averla richiamata a più umani sentimenti. Rimasto orfano di tutti due i genitori, fu ridotto a un duro servizio sotto l'aspra tutela di un fratello quasi fosse un vile schiavo. Egli allora diede un bell'esempio di religione verso Dio e di pietà verso il padre; poiché avendo trovato per caso una moneta, la impiegò non a sovvenire alla propria indigenza, ma la diede a un sacerdote perché offrisse il divin sacrificio per l'espiazione di lui. Accolto benevolmente dal fratello Damiano, da cui, a quel che si dice, prese il soprannome, venne per sua cura istruito nelle lettere, in cui in breve avanzò tanto da essere d'ammirazione ai maestri. Acquistatosi poi grande riputazione per l'ingegno e il successo nelle scienze liberali, le insegnò ancora con onore. Intanto per sottomettere il corpo alla ragione, portava un cilizio sotto morbide vesti; perseverando con diligenza nei digiuni, nelle veglie e nelle preghiere. Sentendosi nell'ardore della giovinezza vivamente spinto dagli stimoli della carne, estingueva la notte queste fiamme ribelli immergendosi nelle acque ghiacciate d'un fiume; di più costumava di visitare tutti i santuari famosi, e di recitare tutto il Salterio. Soccorreva assiduamente i poveri, li invitava spesso alla sua tavola, e li serviva colle sue proprie mani.

℟. Ho trovato il mio servo David e l'ho unto col mio santo olio:

Lettura 5
Desideroso di vita più perfetta, entrò nel monastero d'Avellana, nella diocesi di Gubbio, dell'ordine dei monaci di santa Croce di Fonte Avellana, fondato da Ludolfo, discepolo di san Romualdo. Non molto dopo inviato dal suo abate al monastero di Pomposa e poi a quello di san Vincenzo di Pietra Pertusa, edificò questi due cenobi colle sue sante prediche, belle istruzioni e colla sua maniera di vivere. Richiamato tra i suoi, fu, dopo la morte dell'abate, messo a capo della comunità d'Avellana, e la rese sì prospera colle sue sante istituzioni e colle nuove case fondate in vari luoghi, che lo si ebbe con ragione come il secondo padre del suo ordine e il suo principale ornamento. Anche altri cenobi di diversi istituti, capitoli di canonici e gli stessi popoli provarono i salutari effetti della sollecitudine di Pietro. Fu utile alle città d'Urbino sotto più rapporti: soccorse il vescovo Teuzone in una circostanza gravissima e l'aiutò col consiglio e coll'opera nella buona amministrazione del suo vescovado. Egli si distinse nella contemplazione delle cose divine, nelle macerazioni corporali, e in altri esempi di provata santità. Mosso da queste cose, il sommo Pontefice Stefano IX lo creò, benché nolente e riluttante, cardinale di santa Romana Chiesa e vescovo di Ostia. Dignità che Pietro illustrò colle più splendide virtù e con opere degne del ministero episcopale.

Lettura 6
In tempi difficilissimi fu di grande aiuto alla Chiesa Romana e ai sommi Pontefici colla sua scienza, colle legazioni e altre fatiche che intraprese. Combatté valorosamente fino alla morte l'eresia simoniaca e quella dei Nicolaiti. E dopo aver rimediato a questi mali, riconciliò la Chiesa di Milano con Roma. Si oppose con coraggio agli antipapi Benedetto e Cadaloo: distornò Enrico IV, re di Germania, dal suo ingiusto progetto di divorzio colla moglie: ricondusse i Ravennati all'obbedienza dovuta al Romano Pontefice riconciliandoli colla Chiesa: diede ai canonici di Velletri leggi di vita più santa. Nella provincia di Urbino specialmente non c'è forse chiesa episcopale di cui Pietro non sia benemerito: quella di Gubbio che egli amministrò per qualche tempo, liberò da molti malanni; lo stesso fece con altre, quando occorse, non altrimenti che se fossero state affidate alle sue cure. Rinunziato al cardinalato e alla dignità episcopale, non rimise nulla dell'antica assiduità nel soccorrere il prossimo. Propagò il digiuno del venerdì in onore della santa croce di Gesù Cristo, l'Ufficio piccolo della beata Madre di Dio e il suo culto nel Sabato. Estese ancora l'uso di disciplinarsi per espiare i peccati commessi. Infine, illustre per santità, dottrina, miracoli e grandi opere, se ne volò a Cristo a Faenza, di ritorno dalla legazione di Ravenna, il 22 di Febbraio. Il suo corpo sepolto ivi stesso presso i Cisterciensi, divenne celebre per molti miracoli, e vi riscuote continua venerazione dal popolo. I Faentini avendo sperimentato più di una volta la sua protezione in critiche circostanze, lo scelsero per patrono presso Dio. Il sommo Pontefice poi Leone XII estese a tutta la Chiesa, con decreto della sacra Congregazione dei Riti, l'Ufficio e la Messa, che in suo onore già si celebrava in alcune diocesi e nell'ordine dei Camaldolesi, aggiungendo al titolo di Confessore Pontefice quello di Dottore.

Il Signore mostra che si devono ritenere insipidi coloro che, agognando l'abbondanza e temendo la scarsezza dei beni del tempo, perdono i beni dell'eternità che non possono esser dati né tolti dagli uomini. Quindi: Se il sale diventasse scipito, con che cosa lo si potrà render salato? Vale a dire se voi, mediante i quali si devono condire, per così dire, i popoli, per timore delle persecuzioni nel tempo perderete il regno dei cieli, quali saranno gli uomini, mediante i quali si elimini da voi l'errore, dato che il Signore vi ha scelti per eliminare l'errore degli altri?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Se si può giungere alla vita eterna senza osservare i comandamenti, e colla sola fede, «che è morta senza le opere» Gc. 2,6, come ammettere che egli dirà a quelli che porrà alla sua sinistra: «Andate nel fuoco eterno preparato per il diavolo e per i suoi angeli» Matt. 25,44, rimproverando loro non già di non aver creduto in lui, ma di non aver fatto opere buone? Difatti, affinché nessuno si creda di ottenere la vita eterna colla sola fede, che è morta senza le opere, disse che farà la cernita di tutte le genti che si trovavano confuse nella stessa pastura: onde è evidente che coloro che allora gli risponderanno: «Signore, quando ti vedemmo soffrire questo o quello, e non ti prestammo soccorso?» saranno quelli che credevano in lui, ma non si curarono di operar il bene, come se si potesse arrivare alla vita eterna col solo merito d'una fede morta.

The holy Doctor Peter Damian was born of respectable parents at Ravenna, about the year of our Lord 988. While he was still a suckling, his mother, overcome with the care of many children, cast him out to perish, but one of the women servants saved him when he was nigh to death, and fed him until natural affection appeared again in his mother, to whom she then gave him back. After the death of both his parents he lived with a brother who treated him like the lowest slave, and in whose house he underwent a hard bondage. Even while he was in this condition he gave a wonderful proof of his faith toward God, and his dutiful love toward his father. It chanced that one day he found a considerable sum of money, but instead of using it to relieve his own poverty, he gave it all to a priest to offer God's sacrifice for the forgiveness of his father's sins. He had happily another brother called Damian, the same from whom he seemeth afterwards to have taken his surname. By him he was affectionately adopted, and put in the way of being educated. He made such progress in learning as astonished his teachers, and when he had won an eminent name in letters, he began to teach on his own accord with general applause. Meanwhile, lest his body should get the better of his mind, he constantly wore a hair-shirt under his softer clothes, and exercised himself in fasting, watching, and prayer. In the spring-time of his age he was grievously tormented by the stings of the flesh; and sometimes, when the rebellions of lust seemed about to get the mastery over him at night, he threw himself into a freezing stream to check them. After this he would go about visiting consecrated places, and repeat the whole book of Psalms. He was most careful in relieving the poor, on whom he would wait with his own hands.

Desiring to attain to perfection of life he betook himself to the convent of Font-Avellano, in the diocese of Gubbio, in Umbria, a house founded by the blessed Ludolph, the disciple of St. Romuald, for the monks of the Holy Cross. He dwelt there not long before he was sent by his Abbat, first to the Abbey of Pomposia, and, secondly, to that of St. Vincent at Pietra Pertusa, both which brotherhoods he greatly profited by his godly exhortations, discreet rules, and grave manners. After his return home, and the death of his Superior, he was chosen to rule the brethren of Avellano. Here he founded diverse new hermitages, and made the community so to flourish under his saintly direction, that he is esteemed the second Father and chief ornament of that Order. This healthful care of Peter was made a blessing to convents of other Rules than his own, to houses of Canons, and to the people. He was many ways profitable to the diocese of Urbino. He sat with Theuzo the Bishop of that See to judge of a most weighty matter, and led him by his counsel and assistance rightly to administer his Bishopric. He was foremost in contemplation of the things of God, in severity toward his own body, and in other things whereby to set a bright example of godliness. In consideration of these things the Supreme Pontiff Stephen IX., in the year 1057, created him, in spite of his own unwillingness and objections, a Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, and appointed him Bishop of Ostia. This dignity Peter bore with the highest reputation for piety, and adorned with works meet for a Bishop.

At the most anxious times he greatly sustained the Church of Rome and the Supreme Pontiffs by his teaching, by missions which he discharged, and by diverse other labours which he undertook on their behalf. He strove manfully even unto death against the heresies of the Nicola'itans and the Simoniacs, by putting down which evils he reconciled the Church of Milan to that of Rome. He was one of the stoutest opponents of the false Popes Benedict and Cadalous. He deterred Henry IV., King of Germany, from his wicked scheme for putting away his wife. He recalled the people of Ravenna to their bounden duty to the Bishop of Rome, and restored them to the communion of the Church. He reformed the Canons of Velletri, and brought them to lead more godly lives. There were hardly any Cathedral Churches, especially in the province of Urbino, of which he did not deserve well. In Gubbio, of which he had at one time the management, he abolished many things unseemly. He brought about improvements in many and diverse places, as if each were his special charge. In 1062 he gave up his dignities of Cardinal and Bishop, but he allowed his love toward his neighbours to know no diminution. He was particularly zealous in spreading abroad four devout practices 1st, To fast every Friday in honour of the Holy Cross of Jesus Christ; 2nd, To recite the Hours of the Blessed Mother of God, called also her Little Office; 3rd, To sanctify Saturday in her honour; and 4th, and especially, to scourge oneself in punishment for sin committed. At length he departed to be with Christ, at Faenza, on his way back from his mission to Ravenna, on the 22nd of February, in the year 1072, at the height of his reputation for holiness, learning, miracles, and good works. His body is buried in the house of the Cistercians at Faenza, where the people resort often to his grave with great reverence. The citizens of Faenza, to whom he hath been found good at need even to this day, have chosen him for their Patron in the presence of God. The supreme Pontiff Leo XII., finding that an Office and Mass in memory of him, as a Confessor and Bishop, was in use in some dioceses, and in the Camaldolese Order, by advice of the Sacred Congregation of Rites, added the title of Doctor, and extended the use of the said Office and Mass to the whole Church.
