Dalla Esposizione di Sant'Agostino Vescovo sui Salmo 86
Prima della metà
«Le sue fondamenta sono sopra i monti santi: il Signore ama le porge di Sion» Ps. 86, 1 Perché gli Apostoli e i Profeti ne sono le fondamenta ? Perché la loro autorità sostiene la nostra debolezza. Perché ne sono le porte? Perché per essi noi entriamo nel regno di Dio. Difatti essi predicano a noi: e, quando entriamo per essi, entriamo per Cristo; poiché egli stesso è la porta. E si dice Apoc. 21, 12 che dodici sono le porte di Gerusalemme, e che c'è una sola porta, Cristo, e che le dodici porte sono Cristo, perché nelle dodici porte c'è Cristo; donde il numero dodici degli Apostoli. La significazione di questo numero dodici è un gran mistero. «Sederete, egli dice, su dodici troni a giudicare le dodici tribù di Israele» Matth. 19, 28

℟. Vidi degli uomini riuniti, che avevano splendide vesti, e un angelo del Signore si rivolse a me con queste parole:

Se non ci sono che dodici troni, non c'è posto per il tredicesimo Apostolo, Paolo, e non potrà perciò giudicare; ed egli invece ha detto che giudicherà, non solo gli uomini, ma anche gli angeli. Quali angeli, se non gli angeli apostati? «Non sapete, dice, che giudicheremo gli angeli?» 1 Cor. 6, 3 La folla gli potrebbe dunque rispondere: «Che ti vanti di giudicare? Dove sederai?» Il Signore dice che le dodici sedi son dei dodici Apostoli, uno di essi, Giuda, cadde, ma fu ordinato Mattia in suo luogo; quindi il numero dodici dei troni è completo. Prima trova il posto da sedere; e poi ti vanterai di giudicare». Vediamo dunque che significhino questi dodici troni. Essi sono simbolo di una certa universalità; perché la Chiesa doveva estendersi per tutto il mondo, essendo questo chiamato a formare l'edificio che deve essere strettamente unito a Cristo.

℟. Beati voi, quando vi oltraggeranno e perseguiteranno e, mentendo, diranno di voi ogni male per causa mia:

Così, perché da ogni parte si accorre a giudicare, ci sono dodici troni ; come ci sono dodici porte, perché si entra in essa città da ogni parte: Non soltanto dunque i dodici e L'Apostolo Paolo, ma tutti quelli che dovranno giudicare sono destinati a quei dodici troni, significando questa numero universalità; come anche . tutti, ,quelli che entreranno, passeranno per le dodici porte. Difatti nel mondo ci sono quattro parti, Oriente, Occidente, Nord e Mezzogiorno. Queste quattro parti si nominano frequentemente nelle Scritture. Da questi quattro venti, come dice il Signore nel Vangelo Matth. 24, 31, dai quattro venti egli radunerà i suoi eletti ; quindi da tutti questi quattro venti è chiamata la Chiesa. E come è chiamata? È chiamata da ogni parte nel nome della Trinità. Nessuno è chiamato se non per i1 battesimo nel nome del Padre, e del Figlio, e dello Spirito Santo. Or quattro moltiplicato tre fa dodici.

℟. Questi sono i trionfatori e amici di Dio che, disprezzando le imposizioni dei potenti, hanno meritato le eterne ricompense;

E perché difatti siamo tutti affaticati se non perché siamo uomini mortali, fragili, infermi, che portiamo vasi di terra, causa mutua per noi di mille ansietà? Ma, se i vasi di carne ci tengono allo stretto, dilatiamo in noi gli spazi della carità. Perché dunque dice : «Venite a me, voi tutti che siete affaticati», se non perché non ci affatichiamo più? Infine ecco subito la sua promessa ; avendo chiamato gli affaticati, essi domanderanno forse per qual mercede li ha chiamati. «Ed io, dice, vi ristorerò» (Ivi) «Prendete su di voi il mio giogo. e imparate da me» non a fabbricare il mondo, non a creare tutto il visibile e l'invisibile, non a fare dei miracoli in questo mondo, né a risuscitare i morti, ma : «ad essere dolci e umili di cuore» Matth. 11, 29.

Vuoi essere grande? comincia ad essere piccolo. Pensi di fabbricare un edificio assai elevato? pensa prima al fondamento dell'umiltà. Più uno vuole innalzare un edificio, più questa edificio sarà importante, e più profonde ne scava le fondamenta. E la fabbrica che si costruisce, poi si solleva in alto; ma chi ne scava le fondamenta si abbassa. L'edificio dunque prima di essere innalzato è basso nel suolo, e non se ne innalza la vetta se non dopo questa abbassamento.

Questo albero non commise alcun peccato, perché si trovò senza frutti quando il Signore ebbe fame, non essendo ancora venuto il loro tempo: ma ben peccarono quei sacerdoti che trattavano nella casa del Signore di negozi profani, e si dispensavano di portare i frutti di pietà che dovevano, e che il Signore era come affamato di trovare in essi. Il Signore seccò l'albero colla sua maledizione, affinché gli uomini vedendo e apprendendo questo prodigio, intendessero ch'essi stessi sarebbero a ben più forte ragione condannati nel giudizio di Dio se, senza il frutto delle opere buone, si compiacessero solo dell'applauso ai loro pii discorsi, come dello stormire e dell'ombra di un verdeggiante fogliame.

Because their authority is the foundation whereon our weakness resteth. Wherefore are they the gates? Because through them we enter in unto the kingdom of God, since they have preached the same unto us, and when we enter in through their preaching, we enter in by Christ, Who is Himself The Door. John x. 7. And, whereas it is written that the city hath twelve gates, and, again, that Christ is the one Door, Christ is all the twelve, for He is in all the twelve and therefore were twelve Apostles chosen. There lieth a great mystery in the signification of this number twelve: Ye shall sit, said the Lord, upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

By them is signified in a mystery the whole world, since the Church shall be through all the earth, whence this building is called to be built up together in Christ.

So, not the twelve only, and the Apostle Paul, but all, as many as shall judge, have part in these twelve thrones, this signifying, that they shall judge all men; even as all that enter into the city, have part in her twelve gates. For there are four quarters of the world, the East, and the West, and the North, and the South of which four quarters is mention often made in the Scriptures. The same thing which the Lord showed in a figure by cursing the barren fig-tree, He afterwards more plainly put before us by casting the desecrators out of the temple. The tree herself had not sinned by bearing no fruit when the Lord was hungry, for the time of figs was not yet come, but those Priests had sinned who were carrying on worldly business in the Lord's house, and who neglected to bring forth that fruit of godliness which they owed, and which the Lord was hungry to find in them. The Lord made the fig-tree to wither away under His curse, that all men who saw it, and all men who hear of it, might know that they will be condemned by the judgment of God, if they content themselves with the talk of godliness, without the solid fruit of good works, even as that barren figtree was clothed only with a rustling garb of green leaves.

In Egypt, [in the third century,] under the Emperor Numerian, the holy martyrs Victorinus, Victor, Nicephorus, Claudian, Dioscorus, Serapion, and Papias. Victorinus and Victor steadfastly bore grievous tortures on account of their confession of the faith, and were beheaded.
