Guarda la clemenza del Signore Salvatore: né mosso a sdegno, né offeso dalla grave ingratitudine, né ferito dalla loro ingiustizia abbandona la Giudea: anzi dimentico dell'ingiuria, memore solo della clemenza, cerca di guadagnare dolcemente i cuori di questo popolo infedele, ora istruendolo, ora liberandone (gl'indemoniati), ora guarendone (i malati). E con ragione san Luca parla prima di un uomo liberato dallo spirito malvagio, e poi racconta la guarigione d'una donna. Perché il Signore era venuto per guarire l'uno e l'altro sesso; ma prima doveva guarire quello che fu creato prima: e non bisognava omettere (di guarire) quella che aveva peccato più per leggerezza di animo che per malvagità.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. I fratelli veduto da lontano Giuseppe, parlavano fra di loro, e dicevano: Ecco che arriva il sognatore:

Lettura 2
L'aver il Signore cominciato a operare le due guarigioni di sabato significa ch'egli voleva cominciare la creazione del nuovo uomo lo stesso giorno che terminò l'antica creazione: e mostra fin dal principio che il Figlio di Dio non è soggetto alla legge, ma è al disopra della legge: e ch'egli non aboliva la legge, ma la compiva. Infatti il mondo non è stato fatto per mezzo della legge, ma del Verbo, sì come leggiamo: «Dal Verbo del Signore sono stati fatti i cieli» Ps. 32,3. La legge dunque non viene abolita, ma si completa: così che si rinnova l'umanità decaduta. Onde anche l'Apostolo dice: «Spogliandovi dell'uomo vecchio, rivestitevi del nuovo che è stato creato secondo Dio» Coloss. 3,9.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Disse Giuda ai suoi fratelli: Ecco, passano degli Ismaeliti; venite, vendiamolo, e non imbrattiamo le nostre mani:

Lettura 3
E bene a proposito cominciò (le sue guarigioni) di sabato, per mostrare ch'egli è il Creatore che ordina e concatena le opere sue, e continua qui l'opera ch'egli stesso aveva già cominciato: come un architetto che disponendosi a rinnovare una casa, comincia a demolire il vecchio non dalle fondamenta ma dall'alto. Così egli mette mano prima là (cioè il giorno) dove aveva lasciato: quindi comincia dalle cose minori per giungere alle maggiori. Liberare dal demonio lo possono anche gli uomini, ma in nome di Dio: comandare ai morti di risorgere appartiene solo alla potenza divina. Forse anche questa donna, suocera di Simone e Andrea, era la figura della nostra carne che languiva per le varie febbri delle sue colpe, consumata da' desideri smodati, dalle sue diverse passioni. Direi che un affetto (disordinato) non è minor febbre di quella che fa sentire il calore (nel corpo). L'una brucia l'anima, l'altra il corpo. Infatti nostra febbre è l'avarizia: nostra febbre è la cupidigia: nostra febbre è la lussuria: nostra febbre è l'ambizione: nostra febbre è l'iracondia.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

℟. Estratto Giuseppe dalla cisterna, lo vendettero a degli Ismaeliti per venti monete d'argento:

Gregorio Magno, Romano, figlio del senatore Gordiano, giovanetto studiò filosofia ; e dopo aver ricoperta la carica di pretore, morto il padre, fondò sei monasteri in Sicilia, e un settimo a Roma sotto il nome di sant'Andrea, nella sua propria casa, presso la basilica dei santi Giovanni e Paolo, al clivo di Scauro, ove, sotto il magistero di Ilarione e Massimiano professò la vita monastica, divenendone poi abate. Creato cardinale diacono, fu mandato legato da Papa Pelagio a Costantinopoli presso l'imperatore Tiberio Costantino ; e là operò ancora quel gran prodigio, di convincere così bene il patriarca Eutichio, il quale aveva scritto contro la vera e tangibile risurrezione dei corpi, che l'imperatore gettò il suo libro nel fuoco. Così che Eutichio essendo poco dopo caduto infermo, presso a morire, presa la pelle della propria mano, diceva, dinanzi a molti : Confesso che risorgeremo tutti con questa carne.

℟. Ho trovato il mio servo David e l'ho unto col mio santo olio:

Ritornato a Roma, morto Pelagio di pestilenza, venne eletto Pontefice con unanime consenso di tutti. Ma egli non volendo saperne di tale onore, lo ricusò per quanto poté ; e perciò travestitosi andò a nascondersi in una spelonca ; ma preso dietro indicazione di una colonna di fuoco, venne consacrato a san Pietro. Durante il pontificato lasciò ai suoi successori molti esempi di dottrina e santità. Ammetteva ogni giorno dei pellegrini a mensa ; tra i quali ricevé un Angelo e lo stesso Signore degli Angeli sotto figura di pellegrino. Sostentava liberalmente i poveri della città e gli stranieri, di cui aveva una lista. Ristabilì la fede cattolica in molti luoghi da cui era stata bandita ; poiché represse i Donatisti nell'Africa, gli Ariani nella Spagna, e cacciò gli Agnoiti d'Alessandria. Non volle dare il pallio a Siagrio vescovo d'Autun, se prima non bandiva dalla Francia i neofiti eretici. Costrinse i Goti ad abbandonare l'eresia Ariana. Mandati in Inghilterra Agostino e altri dotti e santi monaci, convertì l'isola alla fede di Gesù Cristo, meritamente perciò appellato dal prete Beda l'Apostolo dell'Inghilterra. Represse l'audacia di Giovanni patriarca di Costantinopoli, il quale si arrogava il nome di vescovo della Chiesa universale. Costrinse l'imperatore Maurizio a revocate il decreto onde proibiva ai soldati di farsi monaci.

Ornò la Chiesa di santissime istituzioni e leggi. Radunato un concilio a san Pietro, stabilì molte cose: fra l'altro, che nella Messa si ripetesse nove volte il Kyrie eléison: che l'Alle­luia si dicesse in tutto l'anno, fuorché dalla Settuagesima a Pasqua: che nel Canone si aggiungesse: Di disporre i nostri giorni nella tua pace. Aumentò le Litanie, le Stazioni e l'ufficio ecclesiastico. Volle che per i quattro concili di Nicea, Costantinopoli, Efeso e Calcedonia si avesse la stessa stima che per i quattro Vangeli. Accordò ai vescovi di Sicilia, che secondo l'antica consuetudine delle loro chiese si portavano a Roma ogni tre anni, vi andassero ogni cinque anni. Compose molti libri: nel dettare i quali Pietro Diacono attesta aver visto spesso sul suo capo lo Spirito Santo in forma di colomba. È ammirabile ciò che disse, fece, scrisse, decretò, specie se si considera la sua continua malferma salute. Infine dopo aver fatti molti miracoli, dopo tredici anni di pontificato, sei mesi e dieci giorni, il 12 di Marzo, giorno nel quale anche dai Greci si celebra la sua festa con particolare onore per l'insigne sapienza e santità di tanto Pontefice, fu chiamato alla celeste beatitudine. Il suo corpo fu sepolto nella basilica di san Pietro, presso la sagrestia.

Come ci riferisce la lettura evangelica. Gesù lui interrogò i discepoli che cosa pensassero di in mezzo a tanti pareri diversi. E san Pietro rispose: «Tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente». Allora il Signore gli disse: «Beato te, o Simone, figlio di Giona, perché questo non ti è stato rivelato dalla carne o dal sangue, ma dal Padre mio che sta nei cieli. Perciò io ti dico che tu sei Pietro e su questa pietra edificherò la mia Chiesa e le porte dell'inferno non prevarranno mai contro di essa. Tale fede sconfigge il diavolo e scioglie i legami di coloro che egli tiene prigionieri. Essa fa entrare nel cielo coloro che ha strappato alla terra e le porte dell'inferno non possono prevalere contro di essa. È stata infatti per potenza divina munita di una tale saldezza che mai la potrà corrompere la malvagità degli eretici né la potrà superare la perfidia dei pagani. Behold here how long-suffering is the Lord our Redeemer! Neither moved to anger against them, nor sickened at their guilt, nor outraged by their attacks, did He leave the Jews' country. Nay, forgetting their iniquity, and mindful only of His mercy, He strove to soften their hard and unbelieving hearts, sometimes by His teaching, and sometimes by freeing some of them, and sometimes by healing them. St. Luke doth well to tell us first of the man who was delivered from an unclean spirit, and then of the healing of a woman. The Lord indeed came to heal both sexes, but that must be healed first which was created first, and then must not she be passed by whose first sin arose rather from fickleness of heart than from depraved will.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. And when his brethren saw Joseph afar off, they said one to another: Behold, this dreamer cometh.

Gregory the Great was a Roman, the son of Gordian the Senator, and was born about the year of our Lord 540. As a young man he studied philosophy, and afterwards discharged the office of Praetor. After his father's death he built six monasteries in Sicily, and a seventh in honour of St. Andrew, in his own house at Rome, hard by the Church of Saints John and Paul at the ascent of the hill Scaurus. In this monastery of St. Andrew, he and his masters, Hilarion and Maximian, professed themselves monks, and Gregory was afterwards Abbot. Later on, he was created a Cardinal Deacon, and sent to Constantinople as legate from Pope Pelagius to the Emperor Tiberius Constantine. Before the Emperor he so successfully disputed against the Patriarch Eutychius, who had denied that our bodies shall verily and indeed rise again, that the Prince threw the book of the said Patriarch into the fire. Eutychius himself also, soon after fell sick, and when he felt death coming on him, he took hold of the skin of his own hand and said in the hearing of many that stood by: I acknowledge that we shall all rise again in this flesh.

Reading 5
Gregory returned to Rome, and, Pelagius being dead of a plague, he was unanimously chosen Pope. This honour he refused as long as he could. He disguised himself and took refuge in a cave, but was betrayed by a fiery pillar. Being discovered and overruled, he was consecrated at the grave of St. Peter, ~upon the 3rd day of September, in the year 590. He left behind him many examples of doctrine and holiness to them that have followed him in the Papacy. Every day he brought pilgrims to his table, and among them he entertained not an Angel only, but the very Lord of Angels in the guise of a pilgrim. He tenderly cared for the poor, of whom he kept a list, as well without as within the city. He restored the Catholic faith in many places where it had been overthrown. He fought successfully against the Donatists in Africa and the Arians in Spain. He cleansed Alexandria of the Agnoites. He refused to give the Pall to Syagrius, Bishop of Autun, unless he would expel the Neophyte heretics from Gaul. He caused the Goths to abandon the Arian heresy. He sent into Britain Augustine and diverse other learned and holy monks, who brought the inhabitants of that island to believe in Jesus Christ. Hence Gregory is justly called by Bede, the Priest of Jarrow, the Apostle of England. He rebuked the presumption of John, Patriarch of Constantinople, who had taken to himself the title of Bishop of the Universal Church, and he dissuaded the Emperor Maurice from forbidding soldiers to become monks.

Reading 6
Gregory adorned the Church with holy customs and laws. He called together a Synod in the Church of St. Peter, and therein ordained many things; among others, the ninefold repetition of the words Kyrie eleison in the Mass, the saying of the word Alle­luja in the Church service except between Septuagesima inclusive and Easter exclusive, and the addition to the Canon of the Mass of the words Do Thou order all our days in thy peace. He increased the Litanies, the number of the Churches where is held the observance called a Station; and the length of the Church Service. He would that the four Councils of Nice, Constantinople, Ephesus, and Chalcedon should be honoured like four Gospels. He released the Sicilian Bishops from visiting Rome every three years, willing them to come instead once every five years. He was the author of many books, and Peter the Deacon declareth that he often saw the Holy Ghost on his head in the form of a dove when he was dictating them. It is a marvel how much he spoke, did, wrote, and legislated, suffering all the while from a weak and sickly body. He worked many miracles. At last God called him away to be blessed for ever in heaven, in the thirteenth year, sixth month, and tenth day of his Pontificate, being the 12 th day of March, in the year of salvation 604. This day is observed by the Greeks, as well as by us, as a festival, on account of the eminent wisdom and holiness of this Pope. His body was buried in the Church of St. Peter, hard by the Private Chapel.

73:10 E fino a quando, o Dio, il nemico insulterà, * l'avversario bestemmierà di continuo il tuo nome?
73:11 Perché ritiri la tua mano, e la tua destra * per sempre dal tuo seno?
73:12 Ma Dio, nostro re da prima dei secoli, * ha operato la salute nel mezzo della terra.
73:13 Tu col tuo potere desti consistenza al mare: * tu rompesti le teste dei dragoni nelle acque.
73:14 Tu schiacciasti le teste del dragone: * lo gettasti in preda ai popoli dell'Etiopia.
73:15 Tu facesti sgorgare fontane e torrenti: * tu asciugasti fiumi perenni.
73:16 Tuo è il giorno, e tua è la notte: * tu creasti l'aurora e il sole.
73:17 Tu fissasti i termini della terra: * tu facesti l'estate e la primavera.

73:18 Ricordati di questo: il nemico ha oltraggiato il Signore; * e un popolo stolto ha bestemmiato il tuo nome.
73:19 Non gettare alle fiere le anime che ti onorano: * e non dimenticare per sempre le anime dei tuoi poveri.
73:20 Volgi lo sguardo alla tua alleanza: * perché gli uomini più oscuri della terra hanno copia di case di iniquità.
73:21 L'umile non torni indietro confuso: * il povero e l'indigente loderanno il tuo nome.
73:22 Levati, o Dio, giudica la tua causa: * ricordati degli oltraggi ricevuti, di quelli che un insensato ti fa tutto il giorno.
73:23 Non dimenticare le voci dei tuoi nemici: * la superbia di quelli che ti odiano sale sempre.

Non si è trovato uno simile a lui nell'osservare la legge dell'Altissimo: per questo il Signore giurò di elevarlo sopra il sua popolo.
