Omelia 23 sul Vangelo
Avete udito, fratelli carissimi, che il Signore apparve a due discepoli, che per vero non credevano ancora in lui, ma che tuttavia parlavano di lui mentre andavano per la via: però non mostra loro le sue fattezze, che essi avrebbero riconosciuto. Il Signore voleva apparire esternamente agli occhi del corpo tale quale era internamente agli occhi del loro cuore. Nel fondo del loro cuore essi l'amavano, ma dubitavano: ora il Signore si trovava esteriormente presso di loro, ma non si faceva vedere per chi egli era. Accordò dunque il beneficio della sua presenza, perché parlavano di lui: ma perché esitavano, nascose loro le sue fattezze, che l'avrebbero fatto riconoscere.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.
℟. Grazie a Dio.

Egli s'intrattenne con essi, li rimproverò d'essere sì tardi a comprendere, svelò loro il senso misterioso dei passi della sacra Scrittura che lo riguardavano: ma pure, siccome era ancora uno straniero nel loro cuore quanto alla fede, egli finse d'andare più oltre. Fingere (in latino) significa anche comporre: onde gl'impastatori d'argilla li chiamiamo compositori. (Cristo), che è Verità semplice, non fece nulla con doppiezza: ma si mostrò agli occhi del loro corpo tale quale era nella loro anima. Bisognava provarli per vedere se, non amandolo come loro Dio, avrebbero potuto amarlo almeno sotto la figura d'uno straniero.

Ma siccome quelli che la Verità accompagnava non potevano essere lontani dalla carità, essi gli offrono ospitalità come a un viaggiatore. Ma perché diciamo noi che gliela offrono, mentre è scritto: «Gli fecero viva istanza?». Da questo esempio si può conchiudere che i pellegrini non solo si devono invitare ad accettare l'ospitalità, ma anche costringere. Essi apparecchiano dunque la tavola, gli offrono del pane e altri cibi: e il Dio, che non avevano riconosciuto allorché spiegava loro la sacra Scrittura, lo riconoscono nella frazione del pane. Non ascoltando dunque i precetti divini essi sono illuminati, ma nel praticarli, essendo scritto: «Non quelli che ascoltano la legge sono giusti presso Dio, ma gli esecutori della legge saranno giustificati» Rm 2,13. Chiunque dunque vuol intendere ciò che ode, deve affrettarsi a mettere in pratica quello che ha già potuto udire. Voi vedete che il Signore non fu riconosciuto mentre parlava, e ch'egli si degnò di farsi conoscere mentre gli si porgeva da mangiare.

Dearly beloved brethren, ye hear, how that while two of His disciples walked together in the way, not believing in His Resurrection, but talking, together concerning Him, the Lord manifested Himself unto them, but yet held their eyes that they should not know Him. This holding of the eyes of their body, wrought by the Lord, was a figure of the spiritual veil which was yet upon the eyes of their heart. For in their heart they loved and yet doubted: even as the Lord drew near to them outwardly, but showed not Who He was. To them that talked together of Him, He revealed His immediate presence; but hid, from them that doubted, the knowledge of His Person.
℣. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went very early to the sepulchre.

Per il nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, tuo Figlio, che è Dio, e vive e regna con te, in unità con lo Spirito Santo, per tutti i secoli dei secoli.
