Commento al capitolo 24 di Luca, prima della fine.
È meraviglioso come una natura corporea si sia introdotta attraverso un corpo impenetrabile, per via invisibile, e tuttavia visibile allo sguardo; facile a toccarsi, difficile a comprendersi. Insomma i discepoli tutti turbati credevano di vedere uno spirito. E perciò il Signore per darci una prova evidente della sua risurrezione: «Palpate, disse, e osservate, perché uno spirito non ha la carne ed ossa, come vedete che ho io» Lc 24,19. Non dunque per la sua natura incorporea, ma per le doti della risurrezione egli penetrò in luoghi chiusi senza libero accesso. perché ciò che si tocca, è corpo; ciò che si palpa, è corpo.
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Or noi risorgeremo col corpo. perché si depone nella terra il corpo animale come semenza, e ne sorge un corpo spirituale: ma questo è più sottile, quello più greve, siccome ancora appesantito dalla condizione stessa dell'infermità terrena. Difatti come non sarebbe un corpo quello in cui erano rimasti i segni delle ferite le vestigia delle cicatrici che il Signore presentò a palpare? Con che egli non solo conferma la fede, ma eccita ancora la devozione, perché ha preferito portare in cielo le piaghe ricevute per noi; e non ha voluto sopprimerne le tracce per mostrare a Dio Padre il prezzo della nostra libertà. In questo stato il Padre lo colloca alla sua destra, abbracciando in lui il trofeo della nostra salute: là, e nello stesso stato, la corona meritata dalle sue cicatrici ci ha mostrato i Martiri.

E poiché il nostro discorso ce ne dà il destro, consideriamo perché, secondo Giovanni, gli Apostoli hanno creduto e si sono rallegrati; perché, invece, secondo Luca, sono ripresi come increduli: perché là è detto che ricevettero lo Spirito Santo, qua che ebbero ordine di restare nella città finché non siano rivestiti della forza dall'alto. Ora mi sembra che il primo, nella sua qualità d'Apostolo, abbia toccato cose più grandi e più alte, il secondo avvenimenti concatenati, più in rapporto con fatti umani: questi servendosi dell'ampiezza della storia, quegli d'un compendio: poiché non si può dubitare del primo che fa testimonianza di ciò cui fu presente, «e la sua testimonianza è veridica » Gv 21,24: ed è giusto scartare ogni sospetto di negligenza o menzogna anche dal secondo che meritò d'essere Evangelista. E perciò noi crediamo i due racconti veri, non differendo l'uno dall'altro nè per la varietà di opinioni, nè per la diversità di persone. Infatti, benché a bella prima Luca dica che non credettero, tuttavia dimostra poi che credettero: se consideriamo queste prime parole, esse sono contrarie (al racconto di Giovanni); se quelle che seguono, certamente convengono.

We see here the marvelous nature of the Lord's glorified Body. It could enter unseen, and then become seen. It could easily be touched, but Its nature is hard to understand. The disciples were affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And therefore the Lord, that He might show us the evidence of His Resurrection, said: Handle Me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones as ye see Me have. Therefore it was not by being in a disembodied state, but by the peculiar qualities of the risen and glorified Body that He had passed through closed doors. John xx. 19. For that which is touched or handled is a body.

Luke, not John, hath, Tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. Indeed, to me it seemeth as though the one Evangelist had busied himself with the greater and higher matters, and the other with the narrative, and such things as are more human: the one with the course, the other with the essence, of history. For as it is impossible to doubt the word of him who testifieth of these things, John xxi. 24, and who saw these things, and concerning whom we know that his testimony is true, xxi. 24, so is it sinful to think of negligence or falsehood as attaching to the other, even Luke, who earned to himself to be an Evangelist, albeit he was not an Apostle, and therefore we hold that both are truthful, neither are they at variance one with the other, either in the difference of the words they use, or in the sacredness of their characters as Evangelists. For though Luke saith that at the first the Apostles believed not, yet he showeth that afterward they believed: and although, if we regard only the first fact, the Evangelists seem divergent one from the other, yet, when we consider what cometh afterward, we see that they are at one.
