Dopo la risurrezione Gesù si fa vedere sopra un monte di Galilea, e vi è adorato (dai discepoli): benché alcuni dubitino ancora, ma il loro dubbio accresce la nostra fede. Allora si mostra più apertamente a Tommaso, e gli mostra il suo costato ferito dalla lancia, e le mani trapassate dai chiodi. «Gesù accostatosi, parlò loro dicendo: Mi è stato dato ogni potere in cielo e in terra» Matth. 28,18. Il potere fu dato a colui che poco prima era stato crocifisso, deposto nel sepolcro, che riposava morto nel sepolcro e che poi risuscitò. E il potere gli fu dato in cielo e in terra: affinché, regnando già in cielo, egli regnasse ancora sulla terra per la fede di quelli che crederebbero in lui.

Andate dunque a istruire tutte le Genti, battezzandole nel nome del Padre, e del Figlio e dello Spirito Santo» Matth. 28,19. Essi prima istruiscono tutte le Genti, e poi le battezzano coll'acqua. Perché non si può fare che il corpo riceva il sacramento del battesimo, se prima l'anima non ha abbracciato le verità della fede. Son poi battezzate nel nome del Padre, e del Figlio, e dello Spirito Santo, per ricordare che la grazia del battesimo è insieme dono delle tre Persone, la cui divinità è una, e il cui nome è un solo Dio.

«Insegnando loro a osservare tutto quanto vi ho comandato» Matth. 28,20. Connessione notevole: egli ordina agli Apostoli d'istruire prima tutte le Genti, poi di dar loro il battesimo, il sacramento della fede, e, dopo la fede e il battesimo, d'insegnare quanto è da osservarsi. E perché non riguardiamo come poco importanti e poco numerose le cose comandateci, aggiunse: «Tutto quanto vi ho comandato»: così che quanti crederanno e saranno battezzati nella Trinità, ne adempiano tutti quanti i precetti. «Ed ecco, io sono con voi sino alla fine dei secoli» Matth. 28,20.
