María Magdaléne, cum adhuc ténebræ essent, venit ad monuméntum. Juxta históriam notátur hora: juxta intelléctum vero mýsticum, requiréntis signátur intellegéntia. María étenim auctórem ómnium, quem in carne víderat mórtuum, quærébat in monuménto; et quia hunc mínime invénit, furátum crédidit. Adhuc ergo erant ténebræ, cum venit ad monuméntum. La lettura del santo Vangelo, che ora, o fratelli, avete udito, è assai facile a comprendersi se ci si arresta alla superficie (e non si considera che il senso) storico; ma noi dobbiamo considerarne brevemente i misteri che contiene. «Maria Maddalena andò al sepolcro mentr'era ancor buio» Joann. 20,1. Secondo la storia è notata l'ora, ma in senso mistico essa indica dov'era l'intelletto di quella che cercava. Difatti Maria cercava nel sepolcro l'autore di tutte le cose, colui che aveva visto morto secondo la carne; e siccome non lo trovò, lo credé rapito. Era dunque ancor buio quando ella andò al sepolcro. (Appresa la risurrezione del Salvatore) corse prontamente, e l'annunziò ai discepoli: ma tra questi corsero più lesti degli altri quelli che lo amavan più degli altri, cioè Pietro e Giovanni.

℟. Cristo risuscitato da morte, non muore più, la morte non avrà più dominio su lui: infatti se egli è morto per il peccato, è morto una volta soltanto:

«E correvano tutti due insieme: ma Giovanni corse più lesto di Pietro. Arrivò primo al sepolcro, ma non osò entrare. Dietro a lui arrivò Simon Pietro, ed entrò» Joann. 20,4. Che significa, fratelli, che significa questa corsa? È egli a credere che un fatto descritto tanto dettagliatamente dall'Evangelista sia senza mistero? No. Giovanni non avrebbe detto né ch'egli era arrivato primo, né che non era entrato, se avesse creduta vuota di mistero l'esitazione stessa ch'egli provò. Chi figura dunque Giovanni, se non la sinagoga; che rappresenta Pietro, se non la Chiesa?
℣. E tu, o Signore, abbi pietà di noi.

Lettura 3
Né ci sembri strano sentir dire che la sinagoga è figurata nel più giovane e la Chiesa nel più vecchio: dacché sebbene in quel che riguarda il culto di Dio la sinagoga abbia preceduto la Chiesa in cui sono entrati i Gentili, tuttavia la moltitudine dei Gentili è più antica della sinagoga in ciò che riguarda l'uso delle cose del secolo, e l'attesta Paolo che dice: «Non è prima ciò ch'è spirituale, ma ciò ch'è animale» 1Cor. 15,46. La Chiesa dei Gentili è dunque significata da Pietro ch'era più vecchio, e la sinagoga dei Giudei da Giovanni ch'era più giovane. Essi corrono tutti due insieme: perché dalla loro origine sino alla fine, la Gentilità e la sinagoga, sebbene differiscano di pensiero e di sentimento, corrono sulla stessa e comune via. La sinagoga arrivò prima al sepolcro, ma non entrò: perché sebbene abbia ricevuto i precetti della legge e compreso le profezie annunzianti l'incarnazione e passione del Signore, sapendolo morto, ella non volle credere in lui.

Dearly beloved brethren, the portion of the Holy Gospel which hath just now been read in your ears, is exceeding simple on the face of it, which is its historical sense; but the mystic sense, which underlieth that other, requireth from us a little searching. Mary Magdalene came unto the Sepulchre when it was yet dark. The historic sense telleth us what was the hour of day; the mystic sense, the state of her understanding who sought. Mary Magdalene sought for Him, by Whom all things were made, and Whom she had seen die, as concerning the flesh; she sought for Him, I say, in the grave, and finding Him not, she believed that He had been stolen away. Yea, it was yet dark, when she came unto the sepulchre. Then she ran and told the disciples, but they who had loved Him most, namely Peter and John, did outrun the others.

What signifieth John but the Synagogue? or Peter, but the Church?

By Peter, then, who was the elder, is signified the Church of the Gentiles; and by John, who was the younger, the Synagogue of the Jews. A Veròna la passione di san Zenòne Vescovo, il quale fra le procelle della persecuzione con ammirabile costanza governò quella Chiesa, e, al tempo di Gallièno, fu coronato col martirio.
In Cappadócia san Saba Goto, il quale, all'epoca dell'Imperatore Valènte, quando Atalarico Re dei Goti perseguitava i Cristiani, dopo crudeli tormenti fu gettato nel fiume. In quel tempo (come scrive sant'Agostino) anche moltissimi altri Goti cattolici furono fregiati della corona del martirio.
A Braga, nel Portogàllo, san Vittóre Martire, il quale, ancor catecumeno, non avendo voluto adorare un idolo, e avendo con gran costanza confessato Gesù Cristo, dopo molti tormenti, decapitato, meritò di essere battezzato col proprio sangue.
