La solennità pasquale si chiude colla festa di quest'oggi, e perciò i Neofiti quest'oggi mutano abito, in modo però che il cuore custodisca sempre il candore dell'abito che depongono. Perché è il tempo pasquale, un tempo cioè di indulgenza e di perdono, nostro primo dovere si è in questa (santa giornata), come l'è stato in tutti gli altri giorni della medesima solennità, di non permettere che il sollievo che si concede al corpo offuschi la purezza dell'anima: ma piuttosto astenendoci da ogni mollezza, intemperanza e licenza, vegliamo a ricrearci con moderazione e a conservare una santa purezza: affinché otteniamo con questa purezza d'animo ciò che non acquisteremo nel frattempo con l'astinenza corporale.

Questa lettura del Vangelo ci suscita nell'animo una prima questione: come dopo la risurrezione il corpo del Signore era vero corpo, se poté entrare dai discepoli a porte chiuse? Ma dobbiam riflettere, che l'opera divina se fosse compresa dalla ragione, sarebbe meno ammirabile,: e che la fede non ha merito, se l'umana ragione le fornisce la prova di ciò che crede. Ma bisogna paragonare quest'opere del nostro Redentore, che in se stesse sono assolutamente incomprensibili, con ciò ch'egli ha operato in altre circostanze: affinché si accresca la nostra fede in queste cose mirabili col ricordo di ancor più meravigliose. Così questo corpo del Signore, ch'entrò dai discepoli a porte chiuse, è quello stesso che, nella sua natività, venne al mondo senza aprire il seno della Vergine. Che meraviglia dunque se dopo essere risuscitato per vivere eternamente, egli entrò a porte chiuse, egli che, venendo per morire, uscì dal seno chiuso della Vergine?

Ma perché la fede di quelli che contemplavano questo corpo, reso visibile ai loro sguardi, rimaneva vacillante: egli mostrò subito loro le piaghe delle mani e del costato: diede a palpare quella carne colla quale egli era entrato a porte chiuse. In ciò egli fece vedere due cose meravigliose che, secondo l'umana ragione, parevano contrarie l'una all'altra: egli ci ha mostrato il suo corpo risuscitato, incorruttibile e insieme palpabile. Perché ciò che si palpa è soggetto a corrompersi: e ciò che non si può corrompere non si può palpare. Ma, cosa mirabile e incomprensibile, il nostro Redentore fece vedere, dopo la sua risurrezione, il suo corpo insieme incorruttibile e palpabile: mostrandolo incorruttibile, voleva incitarci al premio; e accordando di palparlo, rafforzare la nostra fede. Egli dunque si mostrò incorruttibile e palpabile, per dimostrare che, dopo la sua risurrezione, il suo corpo era della stessa natura di prima, ma ben altrimenti glorioso.

How was it that the Body of the Risen Lord was a real Body, if It was able to pass through closed doors into the assembly of His disciples? But we ought to know that the works of God are no more wonderful when they can be understood by man's reason, and faith has lost her worth when her subject-matter is the subject-matter of human demonstration. Nevertheless, those very works of our Redeemer which are in themselves impossible to be understood, must be thought over in connection with other of His works, that we may be led to believe in things wonderful, by mean of things more wonderful still. That Body of the Lord, Which came into the assembly of the disciples through closed doors, was the Same, Which at Its birth, had become manifest to the eyes of men by passing out of the cloister of the Virgin's womb without breaking the seal thereof. What wonder is it if that Body Which had come out of the Virgin's womb, without opening the matrix, albeit It was then on Its way to die, now that It was risen again from the dead and instinct for ever with undying life, what wonder is it, I say, if that Body passed through closed doors?
